This December, celebrate this season with festive holiday music for the whole
family. On Wednesday, December 5 at 7 p.m. Celebrate Hanukkah with the Andy Statman
Trio. Playing a unique blend of klezmer, rock, folk, and jazz. Statman has worked
with musical legends Jerry Garcia and Bob Dylan, and was a lead musician on Itzhak
Perlman’s klezmer sensation, In the Fiddler’s House. Unable to categorize his
music, Statman offers this description to listeners: “It’s deeply Jewish because I
am, and it’s honest because I am.” Tickets are $25 adults, $20 seniors, $15
students/members. On December 25th join Joshua Nelson and his Kosher Gospel Choir
for Challah-lujah with performances at 1 PM & 3:30 PM. Performing to sold-out crowds

On Sunday, October 7, Alicia Svigals, the world’s leading klezmer
fiddler and founder of the Grammy-winning ensemble The Klezmatics,
presents lost musical treasures of the Jewish Ukraine. Drawing on
the fieldwork of Moshe Beregovsky, a Soviet-Jewish
ethnomusicologist, Svigals brings to life, through music and
conversation, tunes recorded on wax cylinders before World War II.
This incredible collection disappeared when Beregovsky was exiled to
Siberia but was recently rediscovered in a dusty archive. Come
help resurrect this beautiful old culture — singing and dancing

As the State of Israel approaches the sixtieth anniversary
of its founding in the spring of 2008, academic scholarship
continues to
focus primarily on its political life, religious and ethnic diversity,
and foreign policy. Much less attention has been devoted to the
cultural
life of Israeli society and its impact on evolving Israeli identities
across generations. One of the most dynamic yet least studied
spheres of
Israeli culture to emerge in the six decades since statehood is its
music, ranging from the worlds of pop music, rock, rap, and

mizrahit /to classical, religious, and ethnic traditions.

The deadline for submissions to the Shalshelet liturgical music competition is November 1, 2007, which is closer than you think, if you are preparing to compose a musical composition. The composition can be by a professional, or a student over 18 (or under 18 with parental signature), and can be a musical choral work, a simple melody or melody with instruments. The purpose is for a composition for a sacred Jewish text, must be original, and not previously published. All the rules of the competition are available at their website. Svigals-Rushefsky in “Mahler’s World: Jewish Music in the Hapsburg Empire”

Klezmer violin superstar Alicia Svigals
returns to the Maverick on July 14 at 8:00 p.m. with tsimblist Pete
Rushefsky.

Ms. Svigals and Mr. Rushefsky brought down the house last summer at
Maverick, and this year¹s concert is called “Mahler¹s World: Jewish Music in
the Hapsburg Empire.” The concert is part of Maverick¹s season-long
celebration of the centenary of Gustav Mahler¹s arrival in America to lead
the Metropolitan Opera and the New York Philharmonic.

Classical concerts are Saturday evenings at 6:00 and Sunday afternoons at
3:00, with jazz, world music, and klezmer on selected Saturday nights at
8:00. Young people¹s concerts are Saturday mornings at 11:00.

The box office opens an hour before each concert; the hall opens half an
hour before curtain time. Except for the last weekend of the season, ticket

New Musical Next Spring at Theater J in DC

Playbill carries an article about a new Jewish musical scheduled for this season’s Spring event in DC. Called David in Shadow and Light, it’s based on the life of King David, with libretto by Yehuda Hyman, music by Daniel Hoffman, choreography by Peter DiMuro and the Liz Lerman Dance Exchange and direction by Nick Olcott.The musical, commissioned by Theater J together with the Center for Jewish Culture and Creativity, will be presented next Spring in May 6-June 22, 2008.

The largest Yiddish festival in Germany is taking place now, July 9, through August 9, 2007.
The festival, in operation since the year 2000, invited musicians to teach Klezmer in several
workshops to hundreds of interested fans or amateur-musicians. The slogan of this
year;s Yiddish Summer Weimar is “Tradition an new Impulses”. For that reason, many
well-known artists from Germany, Argentina, USA, the Netherlands etc. will
teach Klezmer as well as the crossover between Klezmer and Jazz or Tango.

Sharon Farber Commission Premiers this October in Israel

Composer Sharon Farber has recently been commissioned by The Israeli Chamber
Orchestra to compose a new work, which will open up the 2007/8 Season. The
piece, entitled Translucent Rocks will be premiered on October 15th, 2007
in Israel.

Ms. Farber is also the recent First Prize Winner of the Cincinnati Camerata
Composition Competition with her piece The Third Mother/Mothers’ Lament.
This A cappella piece was written in memory of slain reporter Daniel Pearl
and premiered by The Los Angeles Master Chorale. Ms. Farber¹s commissioned
works have been performed internationally, and her acclaimed concert piece
for choir, orchestra and ethnic instruments, ASHKINA, (featuring the
renowned musician Omar Faruk Tekbilek), was performed in Boston by the
prestigious MUSICA SACRA choir in March, 2007.

After a long break spent pursuing other activities, the members of Vampire
Suit reunite at their favorite venue. The band will play on June 22nd at Barbes, 376
9th St., Park Slope, Brooklyn, at 8pm.

As the group’s leader and composer, Jay Vilnai brings to Vampire Suit his wide
palette experiences as a musician in New York, having shared the stage with such
diverse figures as Klezmer great Frank London, Brazilian percussionist Jorge Martins

saxophonist Roy Nathanson, and having played anything from traditional jazz to

KLEZFEST ST. PETERSBURG 2007

The Center for Jewish Music of the Jewish Community Center of St.
Petersburg is proud to announce “KlezFest St. Petersburg 2007,” an
international seminar on the traditional music of Eastern European
Jewry, to be held July 8-12, 2007 in St. Petersburg, Russia.

“KlezFest St. Petersburg,” now in its 11th year, is the oldest klezmer
seminar in Russia. The 2007 festival will include master-classes on
Yiddish folk songs and klezmer music, workshops on Yiddish folklore
and Yiddish dance, lectures, concerts, and two excursions: “Jewish St.
Petersburg” and “Rivers and Canals of St. Petersburg.” Our staff will
include world-famous musicians — from New York, the violinist,
accordion player, vocalist, ethnomusicologist and the world’s leading
expert on Yiddish dance, Michael Alpert; also from New York, the
vocalist from the famous Klezmatics group, Lorin Sklamberg; from
Zaporozhie, Ukraine, the Yiddish folk poet and singer Arkady Gendler,

“WEINBERGER TOUR” in Czech republic
Czech cellist Frantisek Brikcius will appear with pianist Tomas Visek as part of
the project “Weinberger Tour” with composition written by Jewish composers on the
opening concert on Monday 23rd April 2007 in Spanish Synagogue in
Prague and continuing on tour until 29 October 2007, 7.30 pm, Pálffy palace – final concert
Černovice 3 November 2007, 7pm.
The concert tour “Weinberger Tour” of the Czech cellist Frantisek Brikcius and
Czech pianist Tomas Visek is in remembrance of Jewish composer, Jaromir
Weinberger (1896 – 1967), who was born in Prague (40 years since his tragic death)
and introducing to the audience lesser known works of Jewish “Terezín” composers. On

Sid Beckerman Memorial

Sid Beckerman, klezmer clarinetist, beloved teacher and mentor to a generation of klezmorim, passed away on April 4, 2007. A tribute to him will be held Monday, May 21 at 8pm at the Congress for Jewish Culture, 25 E. 21st St. ground floor, Manhattan. Musicians and friends are invited to share a tune or story. Sid’s musical partner of many years, Peter Sokolow and his protege Margot Leverett will lead an evening of musical memories. Annual Research Fellowship 2007-2008

The sum of $3-4,000 to be awarded to the applicant who will commit to at least a 2 month in-residence period (of choice) using the impressive multilingual resources (Yiddish, English and Hebrew) of the extensive SYSNA Archival Collection. Fluency in reading Yiddish is required. A substantive publishable paper or project in any of the three languages is one of the goals of this fellowship.

A distinguished panel of scholars in Jewish/Yiddish Studies, Education, Bilingualism and Ethnicity will review all applications.

Givatron Choir to Receive Israel Prize

Founded in 1948, a kibbutz choir called Givatron has been named to receive the Israel Prize, announced Education Minister Yuli Tamir on Sunday. The Israel Prize will be awarded on Israel’s Independence Day. Founded in Kibbutz Geva, the choir’s generations of singers and musicians have produced 26 albums. For many Israelis, their music became ’emblematic of modern Zionism.’ The Israel Prize Committee judges announced that this year’s lifetime achievement award would go to the Givatron because “In a world dominated by fads …the band and their repertoire have been for a long time a unique and significant phenomenon to their young listeners, as well as previous generations. A thousand singing groups and bands followed in its tracks and have enriched Israeli culture – its heritage.”
