AUGUST 9 AT 9PM
Doors open at 8:45
A concert in Judeo-Spanish (Ladino, Haketía, Judezmo) of music as seen through the eyes of the Crypto-Jewish Community.
Starting with the forced conversions of 1391 that ravaged Spanish Jewish communities and culminating with the Expulsion Edict of 1492, the great community of Spanish Jews was decimated and splintered. Many converted, others migrated throughout the Mediterranean and to the Americas and the land of Israel. Those who converted and stayed in the Iberian Peninsula were confronted with five centuries of Inquisitional horrors and harassment.
This concert features music that was sung by Conversos in Europe, Spain and the Americas that kept them attached to their Judaism as well as modern compositions by their descendants. Songs from the community in Belmonte, Portugal, as well as from Anousi poets in New Mexico and California linger together with prayers kept through the generations by women.
In our generation we are witnessing the return of unprecedented numbers of descendants of Conversos back into Judaism. This concert is dedicated to them and their strength in withstanding the test of time.
Internationally renowned singer and researcher of Judeo-Spanish, Vanessa Paloma, on medieval harp and vocals will be accompanied by composer and performer Ariel Lazarus on guitar with percussion accompaniment
