Isle of Klezbos performs for our 16th annual celebration of KlezBiGay Pride, with this year’s theme saluting the spirit of our hosts at El Sol Brillante Garden & the legacy of so many creative neighbors in the East Village: “WunderKammer Klezmer” will feature our full sublime sextet in our only all-gal NYC concert of the summer, returning to the wonderful urban foliage oasis surrounded by the fanciful wrought-iron fence created by artist/eco-journalist Julie Dermansky. Surprise special guest performers and any rain location info may also be announced at our website below, as well as Isle of Klezbos’ Facebook page and Twitter feed @klezbigal.

Isle of Klezbos sextet was formed in 1998 by drummer/bandleader Eve Sicular as an organic offshoot of NYC-based Metropolitan Klezmer octet. The soulful, fun-loving all-gal powerhouse sextet released their latest recording in April: the band’s CD “Live From Brooklyn” launched to a full house at Joe’s Pub (at the Public) and rave reviews, with band appearances this spring on Seth Rudetsky’s SiriusXM radio shows and a feature in The Huffington Post [by Mallika Rao] as well as interview with drummer/leader Eve Sicular on HuffPost Live with host Josh Zepps. The group’s music has been heard on broadcasts from “CBS Sunday Morning” to “The L Word,” with commissions coming from the likes of Grammy nominated Scissor Sisters and visual artist Kiki Smith. Isle of Klezbos was awarded a coveted performance for Chamber Music America’s World Music & Jazz genres, and ensemble tours have included festivals from Vienna to Vancouver, and colleges from Stanford to Skidmore to Sewanee. The band looks forward to summer appearances also at Oskar Shindler Performing Arts Center in West Orange NJ as well as the Midwest, and 2015 concerts in San Antonio TX and beyond. Last month’s collaborative appearance with Jill Sobule for her “Yentl” songs NYC premiere with Isle of Klezbos as houseband was another rousing success at Joe’s Pub.
KlezBiGay Pride performances featuring Isle of Klezbos & friends have been held every June since 1999 at venues ranging from Vienna’s KlezMORE Fest, to CB’s 313 Gallery [folk & world music sister club next to legendary CBGB], to City Winery. El Sol Brillante Community Garden, established in 1977 on the site of three demolished tenement buildings, has welcomed Isle of Klezbos festivities annually since 2009. This year’s festivities are made possible in part with public funds from the Fund for Creative Communities, supported by New York State Council on the Arts [NYSCA] with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, administered by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council [LMCC]. Thanks also to our fiscal sponsor, Jews for Racial & Economic Justice [JFREJ].
