Long-lost Mendelssohn Piece will bePerformed in Austin

Last month in New York, the Museum of Jewish Heritage held concerts of some “new” Mendelssohn works… newly rehearsed after some 100 years. This Saturday Feb 21, 2009, the Austin Civic Orchestra will perform “Fantasy and Variations for Two Pianos and Orchestra on the Gypsy March from Weber’s ‘Preziosa’ ” by Felix Mendelssohn. This will be the first time this piece has been heard since 1833. The manuscript piece, never published, and first performed by Ignaz Moscheles and Felix Mendelssohn was set aside and later owned by Anton Rubinstein. After he donated it, it was lost in the archive of the St. Petersburg Conservatory in Russia for over a hundred years. Southwestern University professor J. Michael Cooper and Jonathan Bellman of the University of Northern Colorado, have painstakingly reconstructed the work.…

KLEZMERQUERQUE 2008

Albuquerque’s annual Klezmer music and dance festival celebrates its sixth year over
Presidents’ Day weekend.

The Southwest’s annual celebration
of Klezmer music and dance, KLEZMERQUERQUE 2008, will present a weekend of concerts,
dance parties, classes, and a lunch with music featuring world-renowned klezmer
artists as well as many local artists. The annual event will take place from
February 15-17 (Friday evening through Sunday afternoon) at Albuquerque’s
Congregation Nahalat Shalom which is located on 3606 Rio Grande Blvd. NW (between
Candelaria & Griegos).

KLEZMERQUERQUE 2008 welcomes back by popular demand the klezmer dance master from
Chicago- Steve Weintraub, who teaches and performs klezmer and East European Jewish
dance at workshops around the world. Steve will perform on Friday and Saturday
evenings in addition to teaching two dance workshops on Saturday and one on Sunday.…

Rabbi Shefa Gold in “Soaring Souls/New Mexico’s Congregation A Weekend of Prayer and Song.”

will present Rabbi David Zaslow and Rabbi Shefa Gold in a weekend of prayer and
song. The event will open on Friday evening, April 6th with a Kabbalat Shabbat
service. On Saturday, April 7th there are 3 events: A Shabbat Service starting at
10AM, a study session at 2PM and at 7PM there will be Havdallah and a family concert

Houston Yiddish Vinkl Concert

HOUSTON, March 20
The Yiddish Vinkel will present a Yiddish concert and sing-along led by Israel
Ghelman on March 20th at 8 P.M. at the Jewish Community Center. Mr. Ghelman, born in Argentina, is a professional singer and guitar player who has presented music programs throughout the United States as well as in Latin

Albuquerque Academy Klezmer Camp

Set in the foothills of the Sandia Mountains on the lush 300+ acre
campus of Albuquerque Academy, this weeklong workshop features
Veretski Pass, including tsimbalist and accordianist Josh Horowitz,
fiddler Cookie Segelstein, and Stu Brotman on bass. This year we are
offering optional afternoon classes including 2 sessions of Yiddish
dance, a lecture and slide show on 18th and 19th C. Yiddish life,
and a film screening and discussion. You can also hike on our
private wilderness tract and on the many acres of public land
