WorldCat.org Now Available

OCLC, the central catalog organization of most major college, university and public libraries, announces
the release of the new WorldCat.org Web site.

This site—and a downloadable WorldCat search box you can easily add to
your Web site—opens the complete WorldCat database to the public, not
just the smaller data subsets utilized by Open WorldCat partner sites such
as Google, Yahoo! Search and others. WorldCat.org builds on the success of
OCLC’s Open WorldCat Program that has elevated the visibility of library
materials on the open Web since the summer of 2003.

The main attraction of the new site is the WorldCat search box. Web users
can now search the entire WorldCat database with the method most familiar
to them: simple keywords. As in Open WorldCat, each linked result leads to
a “Find in a Library” information page.…

Beth Schafer Wins American Idol Underground Faith-Based Category

Beth Schafer, a contemporary American Jewish music singer-songwriter, won the Faith-based category in a contest sponsored by American Idol Underground (the online extension of the popular TV series American Idol) on July 15, 2006. Primarily a venue for Christian religious song, Beth may have had the only Jewish entry. Her English language songs, Still Small Voice and Love Multiples won an elimination round of 10 from a field of over 600 songs, and then went on to win by a popularity vote, with the public voting on their favorites. Both of these songs are from Beth’s newest CD “The Quest and the Question”, released in December, 2005. Beth is a cantorial singer with Temple Shir Shalom of Oviedo, FL. The Guild of Temple Musicians Announces
The Young Composers Award

The requested 2007 work is a set of 3 pieces performable as separate
pieces OR as a unit, with or without narrator. The work should be 10-12
performing minutes for cantor, SATB volunteer choir, piano and a single
instrument obligato (i.e., flute, violin, violoncello or other
instrument approved by chair before submission). The work should be in
Hebrew, using texts from Jewish liturgy, Bible, Jewish poetry or prose,
or a combination of the foregoing.

Deadline: Friday, January 5, 2007 (postmarked).
Eligibility: Jewish composers from any country born on or after January 1, 1972.

Before the big klezmer bands of the new world arose with their brass and
drums, there were the archetypical Jewish orchestras of the old world, led by
the fiddle and bourne aloft by the otherworldy sounds of the harp-like
‘tsimbl’, or Jewish hammered dulcimer. Renowned violinist Alicia Svigals, a founder
of the Klezmatics and one of the world’s foremost klezmer fiddlers, presents a program
of those ancient and ecstatic Jewish melodies, accompanied by the scene’s
top players on fiddle, tsimbl and string bass: Mimi Rabson, Pete Rushefsky and
Jim Guttman.

Jewish National and University Library Digitized Books includes Song Books

The Jewish National and University Library’s Digitized Books
Repository continues to grow and now contains 340 titles of rare and
out-of-print books.
Among the items added this week:
mi-zimrat ha-arets : American national songs in Hebrew / [translated by
Gerson Rosenzweig] (New York, 1898) which contains the songs: “America,
or My country tis of thee” (le-artsenu mizmor shir), “Columbia, the
gem of the ocean (adom, lavan u-tekhelet), and “The Star spangled
banner” (degel ha-kokhavim), along with notes for singing them in
Hebrew.

Traverse the deserts of the Middle East, the mountains of northern India, and the warm waters of the Mediterranean with Eliyahu Sills and his Qadim Ensemble. The group and their music bring ancient musical traditions to a contemporary audience, allowing for a musical dialogue between the different cultures. The group performs instrumental pieces as well as songs with words in Hebrew, Arabic, Greek, Turkish, Farsi and Ladino.

Qadim is a word found both in Hebrew and Arabic meaning “ancient past” and “that which precedes” as well as “forward movement” and “that which will come.” The band is aptly named as their ancient and timeless music bridges cultures from throughout the near east, such as Mizrakhi, Sephardic and Ashkenazi, with Arabic, Turkish, Persian and north Indian.…

A Musical Tour of the East European Jewish World

Zalman Mlotek, director of the Folksbiene Yiddish Theater, and his actors
will present a sampler of Yiddish music and theater, during a lecture and
performance entitled, A Musical Tour of the East European Jewish World , on
Wednesday, June 28, from 7pm to 8:30pm as part of a 3 day program on Eastern European Jewish history and Yiddish culture.

The YIVO Institute for Jewish Research will sponsor a unique
three-day educational training program in Eastern European Jewish history and
Yiddish culture (EPYC), beginning Tuesday, June 27 through Thursday June 29, 2006,
at the Center for Jewish History (15 West 16th St., New York City). The EPYC
Educators Seminar will introduce lead educators to YIVO’s wealth of cultural
treasures and educational resources. Thanks to major funding by the Conference on
Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, Inc., a broad group of educators from the
United States, Canada, Mexico, Lithuania and Israel will participate in a series of

Hazzan Israel Alter’s Music Now Available on CD

At long last the music of Hazzan Israel Alter is available on CD. Lois Welber recently released her cantorial CD, “Prayers of the High Holy Days: Shomeah Tefillah”. (Shomeah Tefillah – “…Who hears prayer” from Hineni) featuring the music of Hazzan Israel Alter. The CD focuses on music from “The High Holy Day Service” and “The Selichot Service” published by the Cantors Assembly. The original musical accompaniment is arranged by organist/composer Ernest Rakhlin and with pianist David Sparr. There is also one song included by Israel Goldfarb, “B’Sefer Chayim” (from Shirei T’shuvah –991900), which score is available through Transcontinental Music Publications.

These renditions are all sung with Welber’s strong mezzo-soprano in dedication to the 100th anniversary celebration of Temple B’Nai Israel in Revere, Massachusetts, where she has been cantor since 2000.…

Leah Epstein is a song writer living in Israel since making Aliya from Chicago in 1981. She lives on Moshav Keshet, an orthodox community in the Golan. Her Hebrew and English songs are wistful, and at the same time religious and personal. The music itself is heavily influenced from a ‘time capsule’ of American song from some 30 years ago, such as American folk, Carole King or Joni Mitchell. There are some highly personal songs, such as “Child of the Heights” dedicated to her son killed in a car accident, and other of her texts are more universally and politically themed. The Jewish Music Commission of Los Angeles (JMCLA) presents a free
community concert. Featuring special guest Joseph Dorfman, concert
pianist, composer, and Shostakovich scholar at Buchman-Mehta School of
Music (Tel Aviv University), the concert will showcase performances by
Barry Gold (cello), Mark Kashper (violin), David Kasap (accordion), Hila

Awards

Yehudi Wyner wins the Pulitzer Prize

Yehudi Wyner, composer and faculty member at Brandeis for many years until
his recent retirement, won the Pulitzer Prize in music yesterday for his
piano concerto ”Chiavi in mano.” The concerto was premiered in Boston at
the Boston Symphony Orchestra concert last year. Wyner is the first
Boston-based composer to win for a BSO work since Walter Piston in 1948.

Wyner is the son of Lazar Weiner, and is a well known composer in the Boston
area and internationally. Yehudi was born in 1929 in Calgary, Alberta, but
grew up in NYC. He studied at Julliard, Yale (with Richard Donovan and Paul
Hindemith), and Harvard (with Walter Piston). In 1953, he won the Rome Prize
in Composition. He taught at Yale from 1963-77, and served as head of the
composition faculty there.…

cycle of 46 works,an hour of music written for the violin and guitar

Brown University Launches Online Yiddish Sheet Music Collection

Brown University has launced a Yiddish Sheet Music Collection as part of its Center for Digital Initiatives. So far, it’s a work in progress… they’ve digitized and catalogued about 200 pieces from holdings of around 2000 pieces of Yiddish sheet music. The project is impressive for ease of use, featuring both browsing and searching capabilities. The librarian who has catalogued this is Rosemary Cullen of the John Hay Library, featured in an article in the
Forward on March 24 . The music is available for you to enjoy (non-commercially) online, and there are lots of rewarding images of the stars of yesteryear from the Yiddish stage . Ruth Levin’s new Yiddish music anthology

Ruth Levin has produced Word and Melody, an anthology of music to Yiddish poetry by her father, published by I.L. Peretz Publications. The anthology – with texts in Yiddish, English and Hebrew — was launched in Tel Aviv this past weekend. Reminiscences and performances were provided by Alexei Blausov, Regina Drukker, Benny Hendel, Melech Ziv, Prof. Zvi Yavetz, Vera Levinski, Ella Levin, Lev Levin, Ruth Levin, Nechama Lifshitz, Arye Lish, Avishai Fish and Moti Shmit. The anthology contains 49 melodies to songs by 21 Yiddish poets as well photographs and drawings, piano arrangements by Hanan Winternitz, and a preface and epilogue written by Ruth Levin.

Longy School Famous Faculty Dumont Dies at 94

Long term Longy School of Music faculty member, Lily Dumont, died at the age of 94 at her home, March 6, 2006 in New Bedford, MA. Ms. Dumont was a concert pianist and teacher on the faculty of the Longy School for more than 40 years, and taught privately until around age 92. She was born in Berlin, the daughter of Jakob Dymont, a well-known Jewish synagogue music composer. Lily was famous in her own right before the second world war as a concert pianist, and had already played with many of the leading orchestras in Europe by the time of her departure during the Nazi regime in Germany. International Klezmer Celebration in Safed in July

Classical, Jazz and Klezmer clarinetists from all over the world will meet in Safed, Israel, during the week of July 2-9, 2006 for instruction and concerts. .Master classes will be offered in classical and jazz clarinet and in klezmer style for all instruments. Classes will take place at various sites around the city of Sared. Nightly performances from students with a Gala Final Concert, coinciding with the 19th Annual Safed Klezmer Festival July 9-11. Julliard Celebrates Milton Babbitt’s 90th Birthday

Long time faculty member, Milton Babbitt’s 90th Birthday will be celebrated with a special concert on March 27 at 8pm at Paul Hall. Julliard faculty, alumni, and students will be joined by Joel Sachs and Continuum for an all Babbitt program. Featured works include Beaten Paths (1988), Melismata (1982), Manifold Music (1995), Concerto piccolino (1999) and More Melismata (2005). Artists will include Thomas Kolor, marimba, violinist William Harvey, organist Gregory D’Agostino and vibaphonist, Thomas Kolor. Christopher Gross, cello and Lucy Shelton, soprano, Cheryl Seltzer and Joel Sachs, pianists. Tickets are required and will be available on March 13 at the Julliard Box Office located at 60 Lincoln Center Plaza. Julliard Box Office hours are M-F from 11am -6pm.
