Jews in the various Ghettos during the Shoah had numerous
cabarets of musicians and singers. Songs ranged from the sad
and deeply somber in response to the death and horrific
conditions within and without of the Ghettos, to parodies on the
Nazis, to the typical songs sung in the cabarets of Europe before
the war. The caliber was so high as to attract the attendance of
German soldiers out of uniform.

Forgotten Woman Cantor in Jewish Week


The New York Jewish Week ran an article at the end of March on Julie Rosewald, the “Forgotten Cantor”. George Robinson, a long-time music critic and observer of Jewish religious culture, interviewed Judith Pinnolis about her article on Julie Rosewald that appeared in the American Jewish Archives Journal. In a very interesting way, The Boston Jewish Music Festival is continuing to build education about Jewish music. They’ve collaborated with The Arts Fuse: The Culture of New England, a discussion forum. The fire was a completely devastating tragedy that resulted in the loss of life of over 146 working Jewish and Italian girls. Israeli-American violinist Yuval Waldman will be giving a solo recital of “Music Forgotten and Remembered” at New York’s Merkin Concert Hall on Tuesday March 29, 2011, at 8 PM. The program presents rarely performed gems composed by Eastern European Jews, many of whom perished during World War II or were silenced by Soviet repression.

Born in the Ukraine to Holocaust survivors and the Artistic Director of Music Bridges International, Waldman was able to rediscover these pieces by searching music libraries and obscure music collections in Russia, Ukraine, the Czech Republic, and Israel. The American Society for Jewish Music sends out this sad announcement about the passing of Jack Gottlieb.
Dear Members and Friends:
It is with sadness that I share with you the news of Jack Gottlieb’s passing.

A prolific composer, especially of sacred songs and choral music for the synagogue, Jack worked actively on behalf of Jewish music and served as President of the ASJM for a number of years. Also a scholar and noted author, his acclaimed books, Funny, It Doesn’t Sound Jewish: How Yiddish Songs and Synagogue Melodies Influenced Tin Pan Alley, Broadway and Hollywood, and, most recently, his memoire Working with Bernstein, about his years as assistant to Leonard Bernstein, received rave reviews. A biography of Jack Gottlieb’s distinguished career is appended below.

As Jack wished for no public funeral, those in the New York area wishing to mark his passing are invited to attend the services at Congregation Emanu-El on March 11 and 12, 2011, which will be devoted to his music.…

Portrait of Fanny Mendelssohn at The Jewish Museum

A recent acquisition to The Jewish Museum, Portrait of Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, 1842, by
19th century German artist Moritz Daniel Oppenheim, has been added to
the “Modernity” section of Culture and Continuity. The subject of this
portrait was the sister of famous composer Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy,
a talented composer and musician in her own right. Fanny Hensel was
the wife of a fellow painter, Wilhelm Hensel, whom Oppenheim met in Rome
with the Nazarenes.

Kay Shelemay wins Jaap Kunst Prize

An article written by Dr. Kay Kaufman Shelemay won the Jaap Kunst Prize of the Society for
Ethnomusicology, which is given to: “The most significant article published by a member of the Society for
Ethnomusicology in the previous year.” The title of this article is “The Power of Silent Voices: Women in the Syrian Jewish Musical Tradition.” It is published in a volume in the SOAS
Musicology Series, edited by Laudan Nooshin, titled Music and the Play of
Power in the Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia, 2009.

Dr. Shelemay is the G. Gordon Watts Professor of Music, a Professor of African and African American Studies and Ethnomusicology at Harvard University . She is a member of the Editorial Board of Musica Judaica and was the inaugural speaker for the first session of the Jewish Music Forum in 2004.…

A Jewish Star Singing Competition

From the Jewish Music Plus blog we learn that a music contest is underway. Voting for contestants for Season 2 of A Jewish Star Singing Competition, the online Jewish singing competition which has engaged the orthodox Jewish music community, will end Friday, January 21 at 12:00 pm EST. 10 finalists will be chosen from 144 contestants from the worldwide talent competition and 3 will be chosen from the Jewish Star Junior competition. The MC will be the beloved Country Yossi, renowned entertainer, Jewish radio host and singer.

The finale of A Jewish Star season two will be hosted by the annual Soul to Soul concert, benefiting the education of children with special needs.

“KlezmerQuerque” – The southwest’s annual festival of klezmer music & dance
celebrates its 9th year February 18-20 (Presidents day weekend).

KlezmerQuerque 2011 is coming!! The 9th annual celebration of Klezmer music & dance
will take place over Presidents Day Weekend from February 18-20 (FRI-SUN). The
festival is co-produced by Congregation Nahalat Shalom, Nahalat Shalom’s 25-piece
Community Klezmer band & Rikud Yiddish dance troupe. All KlezmerQuerque events will
take place at Nahalat Shalom, 3606 Rio Grande Blvd. NW in Albuquerque (between
Candelaria & Griegos on Rio Grande).

Debbie Friedman z”l

It is truly with sadness that JMWC reports the loss of Debbie Friedman. Debbie Friedman’s funeral will take place Tuesday January 11 at 11am at Temple Beth Sholom in Santa Ana, California. She died Sunday morning, January 9, 2011. Her music lightened the hearts and lifted the spirits of hundreds of thousands of people throughout the world, and brought so many Jews closer to God. I had the privilege of being Debbie’s biographer for Encyclopedia Judaica. She was definitely one of the most, if not the most, spiritual person I’ve ever encountered, even in engaging in everyday conversation. Those that knew her or her music, will surely miss this tremendous musician and Jewish composer.
