Jubilant Inter-generational Celebration at Congregation Rodelph Sholom

Congregation Rodeph Sholom will celebrate Chanukah, the Festival of Lights, with a jubilant, inter-generational Shabbat service on Friday, December 14, 2012, at 6 P.M. This year’s extravaganza will include a medley of musical performances and songful prayers led by Rodeph Sholom’s Senior Cantor Rebecca Garfein, Associate Cantor Shayna De Lowe, and Cantorial-Intern Ben Ellerin. The first night of Chanukah this year is Saturday, December 8, 2012.

This event will be a Chanukah celebration of miracles and the power of perseverance in the face of adversity. The Amernet String Quartet will perform “Music of the Jewish Diaspora” including four of Joseph Achron’s string quartets: “Scher”, “Mi Chomocho”, “Lullaby”, and “Stimmung”. These works were never published until recently — the Amernet will use advance copies of the Achron Society’s forthcoming edition of Achron’s music. The program will also include works of Shostakovich, Zhitomirski, Weinberg, Grunfeld and Haas.

In 1877 Abraham Baer published his “Baal t’fillah oder der practische Vorbeter,” an epoch-making work in the history of Jewish liturgical music. Baer’s publication is considered the most comprehensive documentation of traditional, 19th-century European hazzanut. While his work is well known, astonishingly little has been published about Baer’s biography. My work sheds new light on the cantor’s early years in the German/Polish province Posen, and on his cultural environment in Gothenburg, Sweden, where he worked as cantor, shochet and mohel since 1857. I demonstrate that the very peculiar and specific cultural climate of the Swedish city considerably encouraged Baer in his strivings.…

“The Vienna Rite” at the Roulette in NYC

There are only two performances, November 2nd and 3rd 2012. “The Vienna Rite” is the story of a new service composed in 1828 by Viennese Cantor Salomon Sulzer in collaboration with Franz Schubert and other Viennese composers which sought to merge European music with synagogue chant.

It is being performed by the new music ensemble Yarn/Wire along with guests Brian Chase and Chi-Chi Glass and features the amazing baritone Ian Greenlaw as Salomon Sulzer along with singers Lana Cencic, Allyssa Lamb, Bo Chang, Judith Berkson, Aram Tchobanian and Gavriel Savit. Jewish Music Festival 2012 in Amsterdam

In six weeks time the International Jewish Music Festival 2012 will
start. Mames Babegenush and Gerard Edery will kick off the event on
Wednesday 10th October with an opening concert in the Portugese
Synagoge. On Thursday and Friday in the Compagnietheater,
more than 100 musicians from 14 countries will try and secure their
place in the finals on Saturday. On Sunday it’s your turn! Take
your pick from six workshops on offer or visit the Jewish cultural
market. A winners’ concert and jam session concludes the

European Cantors Association Report

Against the backdrop of the distinct possibility that chazanut and Jewish
liturgical music will become a fading remnant of a once traditional world
within Anglo Jewry, European and UK cantors assembled in Manchester for the
7th Annual European Cantors Convention. This took place from 2 – 5 July
2012, and hosted the launch of the European Cantors Association (ECA).

This new platform gave young cantors fresh resolve to engage with the
challenges they face. Working ECA Groups are being established in the North,
in London and in Europe to deal with local issues. A study day on the High
Holidays has been held in Manchester. The 2013 Convention is being planned
for London possibly with Dudu Fisher as guest. There is a growing group of
rabbinic supporters.…

The San Francisco Jewish Film Festival (SFJFF), the oldest, biggest and most renowned Jewish film festival in the world, announced that Hava Nagila (The Movie) will be the opening night film of their 2012 festival. The film will premiere July 19 at the Castro Theater with a party after the screening.

In a press conference, festival executive director Lexi Leban described Hava Nagila (The Movie) as “a look at 100 years of Jewish history as seen through the journey of ‘Hava Nagila,’ which actually began as a wordless prayer. It’s really a funny film, but there’s also a lot of depth to it.”
The SFJFF is screening the film in all four of its festival locations:

Neshama Carlebach Sings Hatikvah with Inclusive Lyrics

Where but YouTube would you be able to hear a new version of a national anthem? The Forward newspaper asked Neshama Carlebach to sing Hatikvah, but not just any recording. The article was suggesting some new lyrics that could potentially be more inclusive to all Israelis of whatever creed, color or religion in a democratic society. This proposed change is not just for Arabs (not Palestinians, but Israeli Arabs), but also may resonate with other minorities now living in Israel including Christians, Bahai, Druze, Buddhists and peoples of other faiths and ethnic groups.

Neshama Carlebach, daughter of the late Shlomo Carlebach, took up the idea and has released a YouTube video with the suggested new and “old”-er texts. Of course the lyrics of this song “Hatikvah” have been changed before, and also those other famous Jewish songs, such as “Jerusalem of Gold.” Each time, these changes have come about due to changes in historic circumstances.…
