B’nai B’rith Radio, the first 24-hour Jewish music Radio Station

Washington, D.C. –B’nai B’rith Radio, the first 24-hour Jewish music radio station located in the United States began broadcasting on the Internet Oct. 18, 2004.

B’nai B’rith Radio, sponsored by B’nai B’rith International (BBI), plays Jewish music from all over the world through its website, www.bnaibrithradio.org.

Unlike most Internet radio, it is free both of charge and commercials. The station is fully subsidized by BBI and its members and supporters.

Along with an eclectic Judaic play list-which includes traditional Yiddish, secular Israeli, Jewish American, Instrumental, and Chasidic music -there will be special programming like Saturday night sing-a-longs, a remembrance program for slain former Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Rabin, and festive holiday shows during the Chanukah and Sukkot seasons.

Woody Guthrie’s Happy Joyous Hanuka

Announcing the new Klezmatics cd – just in time for your holiday pleasure!

The Klezmatics: Woody Guthrie’s Happy Joyous Hanuka (Klezmatics Records, 2004)

In 1942, Woody Guthrie moved to Brooklyn and soon, through his mother-in-law, the renowned Yiddish poet Aliza Greenblat, he became involved with the Coney Island Jewish community. He wrote songs about Hanuka, about Jewish history and spiritual life and about World War II and the antifascist cause. After his death in 1967, these songs sat forgotten in archives. Lost for almost thirty years, Guthrie’s Jewish lyrics were discovered in 1998 by Woody’s daughter, Nora Guthrie. She was so inspired by what she found, she asked the Klezmatics to write new music for the lyrics. “Woody Guthrie’s Happy Joyous Hanuka” is the first recorded release of this amazing material.…

Three Monday Evening Events on November 22, November 29 and December 13, 2004, 8:00 PM

Curated by Deborah Strauss and Jeff Warschauer of the Strauss/Warschauer Duo, this series is dedicated to presenting performances and lectures that reflect the finest current research and creativity in the fields of klezmer music and Yiddish song.

The 2004 series begins on November 22 with THE FROG AND THE WOODCUTTER: Yiddish Story, Song and Klezmer Narrations presented by renowned Yiddish teacher and storyteller Peysakh Fiszman in a special collaboration with the Strauss/Warschauer Duo.

On November 29 acclaimed Jewish music scholar Dr. Mark Kligman will join the duo in THE SOUL YOU PLACED WITHIN ME: The Essence of Eastern European Khazones, Yiddish Song and Klezmer Music.

Celebrate the Life of J.J. Greenberg

A one-night-only concert to celebrate the life of Jonathan “JJ” Greenberg, one of the founding visionaries of Makor (which became the Y’s Makor/Steinhardt Center in 2001). Greenberg died in a cycling accident while in Israel in 2002 at the age of 37. The concert features four artists with longstanding ties to Makor. In additional to the musical guests, the evening includes a brief slide show on Greenberg’s life and comments by people who worked with Greenberg and who pay tribute to this unique young man.

We just received notice of a new CD, “An Evening With Dave Cash.” This is the only CD ever released featuring the great Yiddish singer known for his humorous songs. Though he was world famous on the Yiddish theater circuit, he was a huge star in France. The selections on this CD are more representative of Yiddish
Cabaret than 2nd Avenue. Selections include a hilarious “Der Shere Fun Seville” – based on the “Barber of Seville”, “S’fallen Die Bletter” (“Autumn Leaves”), “La Mama (by Charles Aznavour), “Tzures Mit Hula Hoop” (Trouble with Hula Hoop), “Arain, Arous” (In and Out) and 15 other selections. Leonard Nimoy Series Explores Jewish Music

“American Jewish Music From the Milken Archive With Leonard Nimoy” will explore sacred and secular Jewish music from the Milken Archive of Jewish American Music during 13 two-hour episodes on WFMT Radio Network stations and XM Satellite Radio.

The series began Sept. 30.

“I grew up speaking Yiddish at home in Boston and hearing this music during services at synagogue and at social events where my uncle and four cousins played klezmer music,” Nimoy said in a statement Friday. “This program and this music makes me feel very much at home.” (reported by AP)

The series’ musical selections will range from biblical epics set to music by Kurt Weill, Jewish legends in tone poems, film scores and operas, symphonies and concertos based on Jewish themes, Yiddish theater songs and world premieres of recently discovered Jewish compositions by Leonard Bernstein.…

Tokyo String Quartet to honor Jews’ 350 Years in America

The Tokyo String Quartet theme for their 2004-2005 residency at the Y will be “Immigrant Composers”. Saturday, Oct. 23 at 8pm at the 92nd Street Y Tisch Center for the Arts starts a series of music by Jewish composers who fled the growing anti-Semitism of Nazi Germany and Austria for the US, and others. Alexander Zemlinsky (1871-1942), his brother in law, Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951), Hanns Eisler (1898-1962), Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) will have works performed over the course of the series. 22nd Arad Hebrew Song Festival

This Week! Aug. 2-4.
Many of Israels best singers and choral groups will be
performing at Arad and at Metzada. These include David Broza, Gidi Gov,
Matti Caspi, Danny Sanderson, Yizhar Cohen, Shalom Chanoch, Avihu Medina,
Margalit Tzanani, and the list goes on and on. Some of the free events include a midnight concert dedicated to Naomi Shemer with Shuly Natan, the Gevatron singers, and others.

Culture will host a CD release concert for Rebecca Kaplan and Pete
Rushefsky‘s new recording, “On the Paths: Yiddish Songs with Tsimbl”.

Rebecca Kaplan sings rare Yiddish folksongs in an authentic folk
style and Pete Rushefsky is one of the best tsimblers on the Jewish
music scene today.

A new CD by Congregation B’nai Jeshurun in Manhattan called TekiYah: Echoes of the High Holy Days at BJ. For those of you familiar with the experimental and spiritual nature of B’nai Jeshurun services, this will provide a wonderful way to get into the mood of the High Holidays. When JMI KlezFest London opens on Sunday 8 August, all London hears about
it – as the biggest UK klezmer band will assemble round the bandstand at
Regents Park (its too big to be ON the bandstand) last year there were 69

Ethiopian Music CD

The Jerusalem Post, May 19, 2004 reported that the Chief Rabbinate Released an Ethiopian Music CD: “A Collection of Songs for our Brethren, the Immigrants from Ethiopia”, contains 14 tracks. This is an effort to reach out to the Ethiopian immigrant community in Israel, and is being distributed by the Rabbinate to Ethiopian immigrants there.

David Chevan of the Afro-Semitic Experience will be giving two radio interviews that can also be heard via the internet. The first interview will be on WPKN 89.5 FM in Bridgeport at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 9 on Phil Bowler’s Jazz Explorations show. The second interview will be on WLIU 88.3 in Southampton, Long Island, between 9:00 and 10:00 a.m. the next morning on Thursday, June 10, 2004.

Nitsa Rants was born in Poland in the 1920s and has been singing at Yiddish cultural gatherings for many years. Miriam Siegel is a younger Yiddish folksinger who specializes in rarely sung Yiddish folk gems. New York City. Tuesday, June 8 at The Jewish Museum, for Museum Mile Festival, Metropolitan Klezmer will perform. This year is the JM’s centennial, with a special presentation from the mayor’s office to begin the festival at The Jewish Museum. 92nd St @ Fifth Avenue, 5:45pm til 9pm… all museums free! One year ago, the Chevy Chase, Maryland-based organization devoted to
finding and sharing new Jewish liturgical music didn?t even exist.
Today, it is relishing the task of selecting the best from among 169
pieces of music written by composers from 5 countries and 19 U.S.
states.

?We are absolutely thrilled,? said Dr. Norma Brooks, vice president
of Shalshelet: The Foundation for New Jewish Liturgical Music. ?A
festival highlighting new music for congregational singing was just
an idea, a dream. Where would the music come from? How would
composers find us? Well, they did, in a very big way,? she said,
pointing to a three-inch-thick stack of submitted sheet music and the
four accompanying review CDs.

Voices For Israel: Chazak Amenu double CD/video has been released. Proceeds go to relieve the victims of terror in Israel. The CD contains the Solidarity Anthem, “CHAZAK AMENU: WE STAND AS ONE” and “SHIR LISMOACH (MALKI’S SONG),” written by Malki Roth, an Israeli teenager
who was killed in the Jerusalem Sbarro suicide bombing. OVER 50 JEWISH MUSIC ARTISTS are on the album singing on behalf of Israel. Koleinu Jewish Community Chorus of Boston

Spring Concert
Join Koleinu for an evening of Jewish choral music on Thursday, June 10th, 8pm at Temple Reyim in Newton. They will be performing a concert of contemporary, liturgical, folk, and Yiddish music with special guest soloist, Cantor Charles Osborne.
Currently finishing its second complete season,
Koleinu initially met in the spring of 2002. As a
community chorus, Koleinu is open to anyone interested in singing Jewish choral music. It is a non-auditioned group, currently about 60 members strong. The group was founded by Cantor Scott Sokol, Director of the Jewish Music Institute at Hebrew College and Larry
Kozinn, a community singer who had long hoped for the creation of just such a group. Koleinu is in residence at Hebrew College in Newton Centre.…
