For years, American Jewish composers have been integrating klezmer and Yiddish folk songs into new classical music, inventing a new form of artistic and cultural Jewish expression. In this unique lecture-demonstration, we present three of these outstanding and rarely performed pieces—Dreams and Prayers of Isaac the Blind by Osvaldo Golijov, Six Yiddish Scenes by Paul Alan Levi, and Café Music by Paul Schoenfield—and delve into the intricacies and challenges of performing American Jewish music today. This paper is part of an ongoing project on the analysis of Jewish
cantillation in the Eastern Ashkenazic tradition. Jewish cantillation involves
the intoned reading of Biblical texts with melodies determined by accent
marks (te’amim) in printed Hebrew bibles. In other parts of the study, Malin
has explored aspects of the system broadly: how the melodies correlate with
and project text phrasing, and how they vary depending on the reading and
occasion.

the Destruction of the Holocaust to be Reunited After 70 Years

Vilnius, Lithuania (September 23, 2014) – The YIVO Institute for Jewish Research is pleased to announce the launch of The Vilna Project, a seven-year international project to preserve, digitize and virtually reunite YIVO’s prewar archives located in New York City and Vilnius, Lithuania, through a dedicated web portal. The Project will also digitally reconstruct the historic Strashun Library of Vilna, one of the great prewar libraries in Europe. Project partners are The YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, The Central State Archives of Lithuania and the National Library of Lithuania.

In 1941, the Nazis destroyed YIVO in Vilna and ransacked the archives and library.…

Amnon Shiloah Z”l

Amnon Shiloah, one of the world’s foremost authorities on Jewish music passed away in Jerusalem on Jul 11 2014 at the age of 85.
A long-time professor of musicology at Hebrew
University, Amnon Shiloah was an internationally respected and widely published
authority on Arabic and Middle Eastern Jewish musical traditions, a
scholar who did both ethnomusicological fieldwork and traditional
historical research. Prof. Shiloah was a prolific author of books and
articles, and editor of records; He did an immense amount of groundbreaking fieldwork. His most valuable work may be his large
bibliographic compendium and his magnum opus “The Theory of Music in
Arabic Writings ca.900-1900” published by RILM in 1979.

Crossing the sea of song, Popular Music in the Mediterranean, from Italy to Israel

Showing the impact of Italian popular music, and especially the Sanremo Song Festival (Festival della Canzone Italiana), on the development of Israeli popular song from the 1950s to the present, musicologist Francesco Spagnolo explores the politics of culture and national identity across the Mediterranean. The talk, which celebrates the 60th anniversary of Italy’s public television broadcasting, will be illustrated by numerous recordings and videos of Italian songs and their Hebrew adaptations. Francesco Spagnolo, PhD, is the Curator of The Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life and a Lecturer in the Department of Music at UC Berkeley.

The first part spotlights one of the most popular musicals of all times –
Fiddler on the Roof. This year Fiddler celebrates its 50th anniversary.
It first opened on Broadway on September 22, 1964 and still has great
appeal around the world. As well as selections from the show, you’ll hear
an interview with Theodore Bikel and a comic take based on the musical by
Dudu Fisher,

However the real inspiration for this show came from Stephen Pearl of Stage
Stars Records. The show, which takes place in Eastern Europe in 1905 has normally had an orchestra. However, if you lived in Anatevka you would have been listening to Klezmorim. Therefore Pearl has re orchestrated and recorded new version of Fiddler with a klezmer band using instruments that Klezmer musicians play and a full cast of performers.…

MUSEUM OF THE HISTORY OF POLISH JEWS

GRAND OPENING OCTOBER 28, 2014

Warsaw, Poland–The Grand Opening of the Museum of the History of Polish Jews will take place on October 28, 2014. At this time, the 8-gallery Core Exhibition, presenting 1,000 years of Jewish life in Poland, will be unveiled to the public. This announcement follows closely on that of the appointment of the new Museum director, Dr. Dariusz Stola, who begins his position on March 1.

Even before its Grand Opening, the Museum has received accolades. The New York Times named the Museum’s Core Exhibition the one to watch in its “Great Expectations 2014” list. The Architectural Record featured the Museum building in its Design Vanguard 2013 issue.

The Museum held its soft opening on the 70th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising on April 19, 2013, and has since received more than 200,000 visitors.…

Michel Pardes CD Chansons Juives

Michel Pardes has released a CD called Chansons Juives and has some videos on YouTube as well. This one is in French, but set in a kibbutz in Israel.
One song from the album is about the Kibbutz, Ayelet Hashahar. (Ayelet HaShahar is a kibbutz in northern Israel. Located on the Rosh Pina – Metulla road, it is approximately 35 kilometers south of Kiryat Shmona.) A lot of tourists stay there and there’s a museum for the Hazor dig. Pardes sings the praises of this kibbutz in his song. Not all the songs on the album are the same in style.

Sara Hecht Releases “Pieces” CD

Sara Hecht of Brooklyn, NY has released a new CD of Jewish songs called “Pieces”. It’s not your ordinary Jewish recording, but has all original songs (but one) written and sung by Sara in English. It’s an album of searching for, and finding, faith in Judaism and Gd. Sara’s music is arranged and performed by some key musicians, including Ian Freitor who made many of the arrangements of the songs. The first piece leads you into a country genre, but moves quickly into more soul and even some rock riffs here and there. There are some moving songs, including “Chana” which retells the story of Hannah and her seven sons in a heroine-point-of view way. Many of the songs are really contemporary female drashes in search of, and in thanks for, the Jewish faith.…
