SOULS ON FIRE COMING TO LINCOLN CENTER

SOULS ON FIRE, the critically acclaimed oratorio by ZC composer-in-residence CHARLES DAVID OSBORNE, will be making its New York debut on Thursday evening, June 17, 2004 and Lincoln Center’s ALICE TULLY HALL. the World famous actor/director/producer LEONARD NIMOY, who recieved standing ovations at sold-out performances of the work in Philadelphia and Detroit, will once again be the Storyteller, with television personality JOAN GOODMAN and the composer as the narrators. MATTHEW LAZAR will conduct New York’s ZAMIR CHORALE and the orchestra, with soloists to be announced.
This gala concert will be a major fundraising event on behalf of the Acadamy for Jewish Religion.

Golden Horn Records is proud to announce its release of Veretski Pass,
Traditional East European Jewish Music by the trio of the same name made
up of klezmer veterans Cookie Segelstein, Joshua Horowitz and Stuart
Brotman. Much of the music on this recording comes from and near the
region of the Veretski Pass (after which the group is named) in the
Transcarpathian region of what is now Ukraine, the main crossroads
through which the Jews traversed the Carpathian Bow. Some melodies were
passed on to Cookie by her father who was born in the town of Nizhni
Veretski, at the base of this pass. Others were collected by the members
themselves in their travels throughout Eastern Europe.…

Kabala by Matthew Fields

Turning elements from “Chad Gadya” interleaved with Rosh Hashanah themes in a trombone brass quartet canonic segment is only one of the many interesting twists of the compositions of Matthew H. Fields recording Kabala. Fields has several ‘classical’ music pieces all with extremely unusual uses of Jewish thematic content. The above description comes from “Call of the Shofar” (1992) which is set for tenor trombones, and bass trombone. And I’ll bet you’ve never heard a carillon performing the Sh’ma as the base tune (cantus firmus) of a toccata. “A carillon is a frame of beams and girder to which 23 or more bells are bolted” …so it’s something like playing a xylophone and organ at the same time, only bells ringing…of course that’s not the end… Then there’s Kabala (1993) which is an intriguing composition for clarinet, viola and piano, and a mood piece I liked a lot for it’s mystery and lyrical qualities.…

Hill.” (named after the Jewish area of Pittsburgh). It’s about half swing tunes and half Jewish, with one video game theme thrown in there as

“Sunday Simcha”

Gail Wartell and Michael Atleson are alternate hosts of “Sunday Simcha,” a fifteen-year-old Jewish music program airing every Sunday morning from 6:30 to 8:30 am on WMPG, Greater Portland Community Radio, 90.9 and 104.1 FM, also streaming live at www.wmpg.org. Gail has been a host of the program for about 7 years. The program features an eclectic blend of Jewish music from across the diaspora, including traditional, sacred, Sephardic, Eastern European, folk, rock, and “cutting edge” jazz and klezmer. They also provide news and announcements for the Maine Jewish community and occasionally mix in a dose of Jewish humor. “Bound4Broadway” (www.bound4broadway.org), a nonprofit youth theatre company in the Washington, DC area, is currently in production for “Parade”, the tragic, true story of the trial and lynching of Leo Frank, a Brooklyn- born Jew, living in Georgia in 1913. The show won Tony? Awards for Best Book and Best Score in 2000.

PITTSBURGH JEWISH MUSIC FESTIVAL

The Pittsburgh Jewish Music Festival, a new annual
concert series devoted to Jewish-themed classical
music, will debut this spring. The festival is founded by
cellist Aron Zelkowicz and will feature musicians of the
Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and guests. This
year’s theme is “A Vanished World”, an exploration of
Jewish culture in Eastern Europe at the beginning of
the twentieth century, and consists of three programs:

Morry Barak’s “Jewish Musical Diaspora” Radio Show

Morry Barak hosts a radio program called “Sounds of the Jewish Musical Diaspora”. It features Jewish music from every corner of the globe. Music recorded as far back as 1910 is aired. The show airs every Friday 12:30-2:00pm on 89.3 fm from Northwestern University, Evanston,Ill.
The web address: www. wnur.org will access the net transmission. Spin Magazine called WNUR the 1# station on the web. The show reaches most of Chicago and it’s northern suburbs.

Albuquerque Academy Klezmer Camp

June 28-July 2, 2004
Set in the foothills of the Sandia Mountains on the lush 300+ acre
campus of Albuquerque Academy, this weeklong workshop features
Veretski Pass, including tsimbalist and accordianist Josh Horowitz,
fiddler Cookie Segelstein, and Stu Brotman on bass. This year we are
offering optional afternoon classes including 2 sessions of Yiddish
dance, a lecture and slide show on 18th and 19th C. Yiddish life,
and a film screening and discussion. You can also hike on our
private wilderness tract and on the many acres of public land
nearby. Or you may want to explore the cultural resources of the

The CD consists of old Yiddish songs, with new arrangements. It’s recorded and arranged by composer, arranger and pianist, well known in Russia and Europe, Vitaly Barishnikov; vocalist Marina Rinkovska and Regina Fridbourg, Konstantin Miclashevsky and Alex Spektor. The group plans another cd of Yiddish popular songs performed by internationally acclaimed singer-super star Svetlana Portnyanskay, who is based in Los Angeles. Ron Shulamit Conservatory of Jerusalem

The Ron Shulamit Conservatory has released two CDs of instrumental collections.

“Shulamit Rythyms” – Accordian Orchestra, Instrumental collection of classical music ranging from Bisset to Strauss, with several pieces arranged by Israel Edelson, performed by Ron-Shulamit’s accordion orchestra. The orchestra’s repertoire includes Jewish melodies in the Klezmer, Hassidic, and Mizrachi styles, as well as classical and ethnic music from many nations.
“One thing have I asked” – Flute Quartet, Instrumental collection of traditional songs from Psalms, holiday prayers, and Jewish liturgy.

Kurt Weill Review

The music of Kurt Weill will be performed by 5 very talented singers, and staged/choreographed by Steve Weintraub in the Chicago area. The show opens on Friday, March 19, and runs Fridays & Saturdays at 8 and Sundays at 7 thru April 25. The location is the historic No Exit Cafe at 6970 N. Glenwood Ave, in Rogers Park.
