JudithShatin Chai Variations on Eliahu HaNavi, for solo piano, will be

Judaica Sound Archives at FAU Features Legendary Yiddish Entertainment Family on its Website

The Judaica Sound ArchivesR (JSA) at Florida Atlantic University
Libraries has obtained the rights to offer on its website a major collection
of performances by the Bursteins, one of the most enduring family names in
Yiddish entertainment.

The JSA, located on FAU’s Boca Raton campus, created the collection
from holdings that had been donated to the archives at different times and
from different sources. It includes 33 albums and features the combined
works of Pesach Burstein, who produced musicals for audiences worldwide in
the 1920s; his wife, Lillian Lux, who joined his troupe when she was 17; and
their twins, Susan Burstein-Roth and Mike (Burstein) Burstyn. One can listen
to the Burstein family audio collection and read about the family’s

Sunday, June 22, 1:30 PM Emily Socolov and Itzig Gottesman will
speak in Yiddish, on their recent trip
to the Ukraine, and in particular the Bukovina. They will show many
slides. After the talk Beyle Schaechter-Gottesman, and Itzig
will sing 6 or 7 songs from Bukovina, including older folksongs, and Beyle’s
interwar Chernovitz-based repertory and original songs. Also possibly, a song that was sung at Gimpel’s Yiddish Theater in Lviv/Lemberg in the early 1900s. The talk is entitled “On the Trail of Our Yesteryears” and takes place at the Sholem Aleichem Cultural Center

30-minute educational performances, just for Usdan students, at its on-site
1,000-seat McKinley Ampitheater, beginning Monday June 30.

A unique event this season will be the July 17 Concert of Remembrance and
Celebration; 60th Anniversary of Israel, hosted by the international concert
presenter and programmer Caroline Stoessinger. The concert will include excerpts
from Brundibar, the children s opera first performed in the Terezin concentration
camp, and since World War II, sung continually in Israel and throughout the world.

Erik Contzius Teach My Lips a Blessing
“Teach My Lips a Blessing: The Music of Erik Contzius” makes its
debut at Temple Israel of New Rochelle on June 20, 2008. Recorded
with the Amor Artis Chamber Choir under the baton of Maestro Johannes
Somary, Christopher Creaghan, organist, guest cantors Helene Reps and
Hayley Kobilinsky, tenor Jacob Meiner and the Youth Choir of Temple
Israel, Cantor Erik Contzius lends his baritone voice and
compositional style to this CD of twenty works for the synagogue.
This collection highlights the grandeur of the Reform prayer service
as well as several of the Psalms and other liturgies. Contzius’
composition, “And Hannah Prayed,” featured on this recording was
recently selected as a finalist at Shalshelet’s Third International
Festival of New Jewish Liturgical Music in Wisconsin.

Everyone knows YouTube. Occasionally you find real gems. Here is Dinah Shore and Peggy Lee singing a medley as swinging jazz.

Dinah Shore, born Frances Rose, who grew up in Winchester, Tennessee (and later, Nashville) was a daughter of Jewish immigrants. Her mother was a contralto and her father a merchant. She suffered from polio, but was not hampered in her educational pursuits to go on to Vanderbilt University. From there she went to New York to be a singer. She cut her first recording in 1940, and from there went into radio and later television.Her first live engagement was with Ed Wynn on NBC. She remained with that network for most of her tv career.

Amaseffer, a band from Israel has release a new CD “Slaves for Life” which features everthing from rock, metal to sounds of the Middle East. The recording is part of a planned trilogy that tells the history of the Israel people. In a way, it feels a bit like a rock opera or the score to a film, but the music can’t be pinned down to one style. However, the recording is quite compelling. Considering that this reviewer is not a heavy metal fan that’s saying a lot. The album shifts mood with each scenario presented. Israeli Music Successful Draw for American Audiences

Whether out of hunger for a connection to Israel or mere interest in the music,
increasing numbers of Jews in America — both Americans and Israelis — are tuning
into Israeli music performances.

Singing in unintelligible gibberish as her hands strike the
darbuka drum with frantic intensity, the short, pretty brunette at center stage
holds the audience transfixed as she reaches the song’s crescendo.
When she sounds her final note, the audience rises for a standing ovation.
Though it is her New York debut concert, Israeli singer-songwriter Din Din Aviv is
no stranger here. The performance hall at the Museum of Jewish Heritage is packed
with Israeli fans of Aviv who live in New York and American Jews clutching her CD.…

SOAS University of LondonThe Music Department runs BA, MMus and PhD degree programmes; all focus on world music, with the opportunity to specialize in regional traditions including Jewish musics, and to receive high-level training in performance. In the BA, Music can be combined with language studies, Development Studies, Anthropology and many other academic disciplines, while PhD projects can be practice-led, fieldwork-based, or theoretical.

So ends the poem “Wild Peace” by Yehuda Amichai. Those words were the starting point
for composer Charles Osborne and librettist Aryeh Finklestein as they set out to
create a musical tribute for Israel’s 60th birthday. The result is Like Wildflowers,
Suddenly, an oratorio encompassing three stages of Jewish history-biblical, the
diaspora and the modern Jewish state of Israel.

In this special lecture-concert leading up to the composition’s world premiere with
the Zamir Chorale of Boston on June 1 at Sanders Theatre in Cambridge, Mass., Osborne
and Finklestein will be joined by the Zamir Chorale and founding director Joshua
Jacobson to explore the inspiration for their work and the process of musical

Gala Concert kicked off NY’s Celebration of Israel at 60

“On March 30th, the Zamir Choral kicked off New York City’s celebration of the 60th
Anniversary of the founding of Israel to a sold-out Carnegie Hall.
The star-studded concert featured the Zamir Chorale and Friends, including the
legendary
Theodore Bikel, Debbie Friedman, Cantors Alberto Mizrahi, Jack Mendelson and Lorna
Wallach, and a special guest appearance by HaZamir: The International Jewish High
School Choir, all under the direction of Matthew Lazar, Founder and Director of
the Zamir Choral Foundation.

The concert traced the history of Israel through music, with musical selections
that ranged from Hebrew chant through favorites from the beginnings of the state
to contemporary peieces, including the world premiere of Israeli composer Yehezkel
Braun‘s Bayom HaHu, specially commissioned for this concert.

On Sunday, March 30 at 4:15 pm The National Center for Jewish Film will screen the
newly-restored 1937 Yiddish feature film THE CANTOR’S SON, starring Moishe Oysher, with new English
subtitles. The screening is part of JEWISHFILM.2008 NCJF’s 11th Annual Film Festival
running from March 29-April 13.

Restoration of the film was made possible by her friends through the Miriam Saul Krant
Preservation Fund, and by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, The Pritzker
Pucker Family Foundation, the National Foundation for Jewish Culture & the Eastman Kodak
Company, with support from Brandeis University & the Massachusetts Cultural Council.

The restored version of THE CANTOR’S SON had its world premiere at the Jerusalem Film
Festival in July 2006 and its American premiere at the New York Film Festival at Lincoln

Jorge Liderman died in California

Jorge Liderman, a well-known composer, died at age 50 in California in February 3, 2008. Liderman, born in Argentina in 1957, went to Israel and received musical training at the Rubin Academy of Music in Jerusalem. He came to the United States and studied at the University of Chicago. He worked at the music department of the University of California, Berkeley since 1989. Liderman became known as a composer of modern classical music, and also wrote many pieces on Jewish themes. A recording of of his composition of 46 Spanish songs “Aires de Sefarad” was recently reviewed by this author for the Association of Jewish Libraries Newsletter. [Albany Records TROY829]. He had many works commissioned by major organizations such as the Israel Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Contemporary Music Players and the London Sinfonetta.…

On Friday, March 28, “Beyond Boundaries: Music and Israel @ 60,” a symposium of the Center for Jewish Studies at the CUNY Graduate Center, will explore the complex diversity of musical styles, cultures, religions and ethnicities that is Israel today. The daylong event will present papers, discussions, and musical performances from 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM in the Baisley Powell Elebash Recital Hall on the first floor of the Graduate Center, 365 Fifth Avenue (at 34th Street).

In the morning, three speakers will present papers on a variety of topics significant to our understanding of the present-day climate for music in Israel. In the afternoon, from 1 to 3 P.M., there will be a concert by two performance groups: the renowned contemporary New York-based chamber ensemble Continuum, with a program of Israeli art music with pieces by Tzvi Avni, Betty Olivero, and Benjamin Yusupov; and Galeet Dardashti’s all-woman band Divahn, with a program of ethnic and popular Mizrahi music.…
