From melancholy midnight meditations to funky/punky affirmations of the One, the Breslov Bar Band explores musical expressions of the Breslov Chassidim from the traditional to the contemporary… Rock, Middle-Eastern, Punk, Jazz… it’s all there!

The group’s repertoire includes old dveykus melodies and ecstatic nigunim, as well as contemporary Breslov folk and rock music. The band members combine their passion for Jewish music with their strong roots in rock, jazz, and world music.

Soul Aviv SoulAviv has produced a CD of the same name. The vocal group is located in Santa Barbara, CA. Members are three women: Erin Berkowitz, Jamie Green, (vocals and percussion) and Liat Wasserman all singing with Rob Raede, vocals and guitar. The recording features music aimed at “tikkun olam” or making the world a better place… featuring the sounds of gospel, soul, reggae. Additional tracks include a number of original songs by Rob Raede featuring Jewish themes. The album’s vocal focus is energetic and highly entertaining. Some of the songs are “standards” recorded many times, such as “Wade in the Water” and “Rivers of Babylon/One Love” which joins a traditional gospel tune to Bob Marley’s hit, or “Oh Had I a Golden Thread by Pete Seeger.…

Leo Zeitlin Chamber Music Comes to Life in New Critical Edition

Leo Zeitlin Chamber Music The music world involved in the revival of Jewish national music or recovery of early twentieth century art music of the first order will be dazzled by the new critical edition of Leo Zeitlin’s Chamber Music published by AR Editions, and edited by musicologist and professors Paula Eisenstein Baker and Robert S. Nelson. Texts are presented in original Yiddish, Hebrew, transliterations and English translation.

But who was Leo Zeitlin? It’s not a name in currency today, but is likely to be more familiar now that musicians will have a chance to perform this music, and it is highly recommended that college and university libraries purchase the volume. All but two of the selections are class art pieces based on Jewish themes.

Zeitlin, also known as Leyb or Lev Tseytlin or in Russian as Lev Mordukhovich Tseitlin, was born in Pinsk (now part of Belarus) in 1884.…

There’s still room and time to sign up! The “Music of the Jewish People,” a full semester, tremendously fun online course at the college level is being offered by Hebrew College. I’m teaching this course for HC, and looking forward to a variety of participants, from college students and up, from anywhere in the US or abroad. I understand that there is still time to sign up to get credits (better hurry and not forget to sign upafter Rosh Hashanah!)

You can also take the course as a “non-credit” course and many people not needing the course for a degree may choose that route. Either way, for credit or non-credit, I’m expecting it to be exciting.

New this fall from Hebrew College:
Online courses from the School of Jewish Music

I’m teaching an online course in Jewish music through Hebrew College of Boston. It’s called “Music of the Jewish People.” You won’t have to be able to read music, although of course, that always helps! However, it’s not actually required for taking this course. It’s all online, and there’s no particular “class time.” You “attend” the course completely online, get your resources and discussion online. The course is a college-level course and is intended for individuals who have completed high school and above.

You have to register and pay for the course registration through the Hebrew College.
After September 4th, there is a late registration fee, so register right away!

Baltimore Hebrew joins Towson University

The Judaic library of Baltimore Hebrew, the “largest array of Judaica in the mid-Atlantic region outside the Library of Congress,” has been moving this summer to Towson University as part of a planned merger. The library hopes to be open on the second floor of the Albert S. Cook Library at Towson University by the end of August. Mendelssohn’s Elijah SummerSing in Salem MA

You are invited to attended a performance of Felix Mendelsohn’s famous

Grober was born in Paris in 1951 – the son of Holocaust Survivirs from

prime, Grober was vital and important force of the Yiddish music scene in
France. He studied Yiidish singing with the Yiddish legend Sarah Gorby. The more
he became involved with Yiddish, the language of his parents and
grandparents, the more he realized how important it was to create

The final two concerts of The Jewish Museum’s popular
SummerNights series are on Thursday evenings, July 16 and 23. On July
16, SLAVIC SOUL PARTY! performs virtuosic new brass band music
incorporating diverse influences, and on July 23, Ljova and the
Kontraband offer a mix of Eastern-European melodies, Latin rhythms and
jazz-inspired improvisations. Concerts begin at 7:30 pm. The Jewish
Museum is located at Fifth Avenue at 92nd Street, Manhattan.
