Vira Lozinsky has been nominated for an Independent Music Award 2012 in the World/Traditional category for her new album of Yiddish songs Wunderweg — Wondrous Way. Winners will be determined by a panel of 77 influential artist and industry judges including Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan, Suzanne Vega, Joshua Redman, Tori Amos, Michael Franti, Bettye LaVette, Del McCoury.

LINDA AND ISAAC STERN CHARITABLE FOUNDATION
TO ESTABLISH
THE 2012 ISAAC STERN STRING SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship in the name of Isaac Stern, the violinist, educator,
humanitarian, and savior of Carnegie Hall, will soon be presented to a
violin student at Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts
(www.usdan.com). The scholarship has been funded by a generous grant from
the Linda and Isaac Stern Charitable Foundation. Usdan¹s faculty will hold
auditions this spring in order to identify the winning student.

Chai Variations on Eliahu HaNavi was inspired by the folk song
Eliahu HaNavi (Elijah the Prophet), often sung during the closing
service of the Jewish Sabbath. The letters of Chai, which means
life or living in Hebrew, symbolically stand for the number 18;
hence, 18 variations. I decided to give the performer a choice
regarding the ordering of the variations as a reflection of my
sense of performance as a collaboration between performer and
composer (and, for that matter, listener).…

On Sunday, March 11th at 3 PM the Society will present The Leo Kraft 90th
Birthday Concert at the Center for Jewish History. This performance will
feature some of New York’s finest chamber music players, including flutist
Patricia Spencer, clarinetists Charles Neidich and Ayako Oshima, violinist
Renne Jolles, violist Mark Halloway, and cellist Marcy Rosen, as well pianist
Morey Ritt, who will premiere Testimonium, a new work Kraft has written
for her.
Among other works on the program are New Songs from Old, a fantasy for
solo clarinet based on traditional Jewish motifs and Seven Hebrew Songs to
poems by medieval Hebrew poets, sung by the American baritone Thomas

Rabi Shimeon in Meron,
There came a rumor that the famous composer and songwriter Naomi Shemer,
become ill. My thought at that time was what can I to help her in that
situation. (Meron is a place where people are praying, crying, asking their
requests for health, livelihood matchmaking etc’.) So I decided to play one
of her songs (Shirat Ha’asabim to words of R’ Nachman), and to combine it
with a Breslaver Nigun.
After I have done it (it was the first time in history that such song was
played in Meron) I was told that one of the Chassidim asked his friend
:”What is that tune?” and he was answered: “Oh, that is un alter nign”.…

Leo Zeitlin belonged to a group of early 20th- century young Russian-Jewish composers–mostly students of the St. Petersburg Conservatory and members of the Society for Jewish Folk Music in St. Petersburg–who were united by the idea of creating a Jewish national music movement. Adirah Liebschutz is a singer and composer who was inspired to compose
praise and worship songs based on Scripture and Jewish liturgy. Adirah has been
profoundly moved by stories passed from survivors of the Shoah and Kristallnacht and
have created a musical tribute from Tehillim (Psalms). Two of the songs appear on her first
CD, Tehilim, and were composed by victims of the Holocaust. They were preserved in the memory of
her mother-in-law, who was liberated from Bergen-Belsen, and passed on. Adirah has shared these memories on her CD in which she presents songs in 3 languages, Hebrew, Spanish and English. For more information:

Yaffa Yarkoni, (December 24,1925-Jan 1, 2012). Born in Giv’ atayim, Israel. Yarkoni, as many of her generation, was the child of immigrants from the Caucuses. She was the daughter of Malka Alhassof and Avraham Abramov, the middle daughter of three children. Each parent had migrated early in the 20th century. Avraham Abramov, a fabric and carpet dealer, met Malka in Tel Aviv and married her there. Later, he left his family and moved to South Africa. Meanwhile, Malka was left to raise the children. She owned Tslil coffee house in Givatayim (Givat Rambam). All three young children (including Yaffa’s siblings Binyamin, Tikva) proved to have musical talent in singing, dancing and playing musical instruments. They started off in a teenage group Basmati. Yaffa attended Gertrude Kraus Dance School and from there succeeded in landing a place with the dance troupe of the Palestine Opera Company.…

The Israeli Music Competition was begun in 2008 and aims to familarise both professionals and students with the fascinating styles of Israeli music – a rich tapestry of sounds which produce a musical blend without equal; a fusion of Western musical idioms such as Klezmer (brought over with the first immigrants in the 1880s), and Eastern traditions brought by Jews from Arab countries.
The Ernest Bloch Music Competition was begun in 2009. Ernest Bloch (24 July 1880 ‚Äì 15 July 1959) was a Swiss-born, American-Jewish composer and, since the 50th anniversary of his death was commemorated in 2009, the addition of the Ernest Bloch Music Competition to the Israeli Music Competition has drawn much worldwide interest.…

Adrienne Cooper (1946-2011), a leading light of Yiddish song died early last night, December 25, of cancer in Roosevelt Hospital in NYC. She was surrounded by her family and friends. Ms. Cooper, one of the world’s top figures of Yiddish music, brought Yiddish folk and theater music to modern audiences. She was a valued performer, not only for her impressive vocal qualities, but her masterful interpretive style and tremendous stage presence. She presented Yiddish song in such an expressive way that any audience could understand and appreciate it. Along with her feminist social conscience, she was a mentor and leader to thousands of musicians and students. She helped co-found “Klezkamp” and spread Yiddish culture throughout the world. She is survived by a daughter, Sara Gordon, and partner Marilyn Lerner, two brothers and her mother.…

Frank London‘s Klezmer Brass Band Allstars will perform a Hanukkah
concert at The Jewish Museum on Tuesday, December 27 at 7:30 pm. This band has
toured the world, bringing over the top exuberant energy to traditional Jewish roots
music. Their 2005 CD Carnival Conspiracy was Rolling Stone magazine’s #1 non-English
recording. This concert will feature joyous Jewish-Gypsy-Balkan-jazz party sounds
as well as favorite Hanukkah songs in new arrangements. Members of the band are
trumpeter/composer Frank London, drummer Aaron Alexander, tuba player Ron Caswell,
clarinetist Matt Darriau, trombonist Brian Drye, and accordionist Patty Farrell.
