Klezmer Concert and Yiddish Dance Party at Columbia University

The Columbia University Series on Klezmer Music and Yiddish Song opens its
2005-2006 series on Monday, December 12, 2005, 8:00 PM, with a klezmer concert
and Yiddish dance party featuring the Strauss/Warschauer Duo and the Columbia
Klezmer Band.

The concert of traditional and original klezmer music and Yiddish songs will
be followed by dance instruction and a dance party.
The event is free and open to the public, and will take place at Deutsches
Haus, 420 West 116th Street (between Amsterdam Avenue and Morningside Drive) in
New York City. No tickets necessary.

Rabbi David Zeller releases “Goodnight My Sweetest Children”

Rabbi David Zeller has released a CD of music for children and adults entitled “Goodnight My Sweetest Children”.
Zeller is a singer, teacher and counselor based in Jerusalem. These songs utilize the melodies of Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach and are based on Jewish bedtime prayers. Songs are intended to be relaxing and soothing to help children fall asleep. The CD can be purchased at: www.davidzeller.org/music

Got music? Shalshelet, the Foundation for New Jewish Liturgical Music, is accepting submissions of original compositions for the Second International Festival of New Jewish Liturgical Music, to be held in June 2006. The
deadline for submissions is December 30, 2005. Shalshelet encourages the creation of compositions that enhance congregational worship and help Jews rediscover prayer through music. The best of submitted compositions are featured in an annual concert, workshops,

“Purimshpil” guidebook book published

A book “Purimshpil. Scenario for work at Klezfest in Ukraine, 2005” (Kiev: The Center of Jewish Education in Ukraine. Jewish Music Department, 2005) was published for the recent “Klezfest in Ukraine, 2005” event. The book has been prepared using Moisey Beregovsky’s materials from his “Jewish folk musical theatrical performances” (Kiev, Institute of Judaic Library, Publisher “Duh I Litera”, 2001). The book was released for the use of musicians and teachers in concert work and education. The Purimshpil was directed by Alina Ivakh, scenario composed by Eugenia Lopatnik, music by Polina Shepherd and traditional.

Klezmer Field Work

Shane Solow has put together a webpage as part of “Lost Trails” with some sound clips of field recordings done in Romania of klezmer music. He recorded musicians in northern Romania that play “archaic melodies” that are a prototype for Klezmer music. They learned the melodies from Jewish musicians who lived in this region before the second world war. They are some of the last performers who know this tradition in that area. The musicians on the CD are:

Mike Eisenstadt, z”l , Host of Sunday Simcha Radio dead at 54.

It is with sadness that we recognize, Sunday Simcha, hosted by Mike Eisenstadt is no longer available. Mike died Friday Sept. 2, 2005 from a long battle with cancer at age 54. Eisenstadt hosted the Jewish radio show for over twenty years, starting in 1985. He kept it up continually. and it was the Florida Gulf Coast’s only Jewish radio show. 92nd Street Y offers classes on Mahler and Schoenberg

Beginning today, Sept. 18. Daniel Felsenfeld will lead a series of 12 sessions on Mahler and Schoenberg being offered by the 92nd Street Y School of Muisc. It examines two of the most important composers of the 20th century, both of whom happed to be born Jewish. Mahler’s work summed up the Romantic period and marked its closure; Schoenberg, following Mahler’s direction, created many of the musical techniques that define the 20th century. Both men converted in their lifetimes. Schoenberg returned later in life to Judaism. The class examines their works, their biographies and thei culture that surrounded them The course is taught by composer and music writer Daniel Felsenfeld. 2-3pm. Cost: $320.

Michael Lukin Catalogues the Dov Noy Collection at JNUL

Congratulations to flautist Michael Lukin on the completion of the Song Index to the Dov Noy Collection in the Jewish National University Library (JNUL) in Jerusalem. This event will be of world wide interest to those who love Yiddish and Hebrew songs. The project involved meticulous cataloging that allows a searcher to find individual songs within a large number of Yiddish and Hebrew song anthologies and other works in this collection. Each song is searchable in the vernacular including keyword, title and author (composer and lyricist) searching. In addition, the incipit of the song, that is, the opening lines, or in some cases, some line of the refrain which may be more identifying to the song, are included in the record. Searchers may try typing in their title or even just a word of the title (keyword) to find which volumes this song may be in.…

Jewish National Library in Jerusalem Digital Idelssohn

The Jewish National Library in Jerusalem has worked the miracle of digitizing, among other works, the 10-volumes of the Abraham Zvi Idelssohn Thesaurus of Oriental Hebrew Melodies, first published in 1923. Idelssohn, known as the father of Jewish musicology, participated nearly a century ago in field recording work in then Palestine. He recorded Jews and and non-Jewish residents of the area, taking meticulous notes both of speech, education and background of the informants, and transcribing into notation their songs from the wax cylinders her made there. From his field work and other research, he produced a ten-volume monumental study which became the basis of musicology of the various Jewish musics from throughout the world, both sacred and secular. Now, this marvelous resource of Jewish music is available online from the JNUL website.…

“Dus gezang fin geto Lodzh/Song of the Lodz Ghetto”

The new Brave Old World CD has been released: “Dus gezang fin geto Lodzh/Song of the Lodz Ghetto,” on the Winter & Winter label. The CD is now available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and should be in the stores across North America. The program has been evolving since 1990, and it reflects BOW’s own experiences over 15 years of performing Jewish music. This album represents a step over into new form of Jewish music–a ‘yiddish song suite’ and is not only of high musical performance quality, but may set precedents for future art forms in Jewish music. I’m calling this new Jewish art form, a ‘bernian suite’ in honor of Alan Bern. For more information read on:
