Dr. Brigid Cohen will present a lecture entitled “‘In a Land
Large as an Apple Tree’: Wolpe’s Avant-Garde Music, Pedagogy, and
Pacifist Zionism in 1930’s Palestine” and Prof. Michael Beckerman
of NYU will contribute a written response.

October 10-14, 2012 in Amsterdam!

Preparations for the Third International Jewish Music Competition are
in full swing. Mark you calendar and tell your friends to join us in
Amsterdam for the five-day festival, October 10-14, 2012. We’ll start
with a kickoff concert in the monumental Portuguese Synagogue (built
in 1675), followed by the three-day competition in the
elegant Compagnie Theater, with 24 ensembles from around the world.
To close, we’ll host a day of workshops with a Jewish cultural
marketplace, an open podium, and a closing concert with winners from
the competition.

Judah Magnes Museum Library and Archives

The Judah Magnes Museum, located in Berkeley, California is open to the public. The Library contains Jewish recorded music and sheet music. Among the collections are a large number of 78 recordings. The Museum asks researchers to phone first and make an appointment at 510-549-6939. They are generally open Sundays–Thursdays, but closed on Jewish and Federal holidays, and are located at 2911 Russell Street, Berkeley, CA 94705.

“ZUN MIT A REGN” (Sun and Rain) in St. Petersburg

The Amsterdam Jewish Music Projects Foundation will be taking part in
the Russian Centennial Celebration for Dmitri Shostakovich with the
programme “Zun mit a regn” (Sun and Rain) that is to be performed at the
Shostakovich Conferences in St. Petersburg on 12 and 13 October. The
programme, which premiered in the Netherlands, includes chamber music and
songs composed by Shostakovich himself and by his friends Mieczyslaw
Weinberg and Veniamin Basner. The central source of inspiration for the
works on the programme is the music of the Jewish people, oppressed in
Russia during the Stalin regime. The works will be performed by singer
Sovali (soprano), violinist Grigory Sedukh, cellist Alexander Oratovski and
pianist Paul Prenen. The performances are supported by the Wilhelmina E.
Jansen Fund.

Foundation (PPF) and the women and children of South Africa’s townships.

PPF is a New York-based non-profit organization founded in 1995 that builds bridges
between caring communities in the United States and women and students in South
Africa. PPF is helping South Africans as they strive for economic independence and
access to education despite the challenges of apartheid’s legacy, AIDS and poverty.

A sohisticated website introduces the Neshoma Orchestra of Cedarhurst, New York. Celebrating 20 years as a band performing “at weddings, dinners, Bar /Bat Mitzvahs, and organizational/corporate events worldwide,” the orchestra is an exemplar of the American Yeshivish and Modern Orthodox style of music. The group boasts a large number of instrumentalists and vocalists, although there are no individual bios on the website. What defines a particular genre of music as the voice of a people? of a nation? And what if the two are intrinsically intertwined? For the founders of Israeli art music—Paul Ben-Haim, Alexander Boskovich, Oedoen Partos, Mordecai Seter and Josef Tal—the goal was to separate people and nation, to create a national “style” of music that was unique to Israel, rather than identified with Jewish music of the Diaspora.…

The Guild of Temple Musicians

The Guild of Temple Musicians is an educational and networking organization for synagogue musicians, affiliated with the American Conference of Cantors. It publishes a newsletter and offers workshops for members, as well as an annual convention. The Guild sponsors the Young Composer’s Award for the creation of serious works of Jewish music suitable for worship and/or the concert stage. In addtion, with the American Conference of Cantors, the Guild also runs the Generation to Generation Award to encourage High School musicians to create new works of music. Libraries and Archives with Jewish Music Collections

Jewish Theological Seminary. Music Archives and Sabin Family Music Library

The Jewish music library supports the H.L. Miller Cantorial School of the JTS. The music library contains more than 5,500 reference materials, general Jewish music, cantor’s notebooks, music histories, scores, and sound recordings. Other historical materials include liturgical music,published and unpublished, from late-nineteenth and early twentieth century Europe and Russia. The library serves as a “repository for the history of Jewish music in the United States.” The music archives are part of the JTS special collections. Of special note are the papers of Max Wohlberg, Solomon Rosowsky, Herbert Fromm and Samuel Rosenbaum with finding aids available online. The JTS music archives contains the manuscripts of the Putterman Collection, which were commissioned works for synagogue.

The American Seminary for Contemporary Judaism

New Cantorial school which has finished its first year of teaching the art of Chazzanut. Located at the Baldwin Jewish Center in Baldwin, New York. The Seminary is new,having opened in October, 2004, but it is affiliated with the Jewish Ministers Cantors Association of America (JMCA) which was foundin 1896 as the Hazanim Farband iand is the oldest cantorial association in the United Sttes. The JMCA will serve all denominations of Jewish cantors. One of the main advocacies of the group will be the preservation of nusach. The program of study is based on the “nuts and bolts” of what cantors need to know. Online courses from the School of Jewish Music

I’m teaching an online course in Jewish music through Hebrew College of Boston. It’s called “Music of the Jewish People.” You won’t have to be able to read music, although of course, that always helps! However, it’s not actually required for taking this course. It’s all online, and there’s no particular “class time.” You “attend” the course completely online, get your resources and discussion online. The course is a college-level course and is intended for individuals who have completed high school and above.

You have to register and pay for the course registration through the Hebrew College.
After September 4th, there is a late registration fee, so register right away!

The seventh Helen and Sam Kaplan Foundation Commission for a new Concert
Band composition written by a composer of Jewish heritage is outlined below.
Any questions should be directed directly to Dr. Janet Heukeshoven, Director
of Bands at Saint Mary¹s University of Minnesota. Contact information is

Amount of Commission:
$5,000.00 plus travel/expense allowance for a campus visit at the premier of
the composition.

Description of the Composition:
The work will be scored for standard concert band instrumentation,
appropriate difficulty level for advanced high school bands and collegiate
ensembles. (A ³grade 4² level of difficulty by current educational
standards.) The orchestration of the 2012 project may be extended to

campus of Albuquerque Academy, this weeklong workshop features
Veretski Pass, including tsimbalist and accordianist Josh Horowitz,
fiddler Cookie Segelstein, and Stu Brotman on bass. This year we are
offering optional afternoon classes including 2 sessions of Yiddish
dance, a lecture and slide show on 18th and 19th C. Yiddish life,
and a film screening and discussion. You can also hike on our
private wilderness tract and on the many acres of public land

Karl Goldmark was a key figure of the musical culture of the Austro-Hungarian
Monarchy. He was born in a Hungarian city as a son of a Jewish chazzan, but his
activity concentrated mostly to Vienna. He considered himself Hungarian, but all of
his operas were composed in German and, except Gatz von Berlichingen, premiered in
Vienna. Thus, his life and oeuvre represents not only the problematic questions of
citizenship, religion and national identity in Central Europe at the turn of the
century, but also their impact on a variety of musical genres (operas, symphonic
works, chamber music, choral music, works for piano and songs).…

KLEZFEST ST. PETERSBURG 2007

The Center for Jewish Music of the Jewish Community Center of St.
Petersburg is proud to announce “KlezFest St. Petersburg 2007,” an
international seminar on the traditional music of Eastern European
Jewry, to be held July 8-12, 2007 in St. Petersburg, Russia.

“KlezFest St. Petersburg,” now in its 11th year, is the oldest klezmer
seminar in Russia. The 2007 festival will include master-classes on
Yiddish folk songs and klezmer music, workshops on Yiddish folklore
and Yiddish dance, lectures, concerts, and two excursions: “Jewish St.
Petersburg” and “Rivers and Canals of St. Petersburg.” Our staff will
include world-famous musicians — from New York, the violinist,
accordion player, vocalist, ethnomusicologist and the world’s leading
expert on Yiddish dance, Michael Alpert; also from New York, the
vocalist from the famous Klezmatics group, Lorin Sklamberg; from

Choral Composer and arranger. Has written numerous works and also arranged Yiddish choral works, often incorporating some English to help audiences appreciate the texts better. Zuckerman appears to be a highly professional and successful modern choral arranger. You can hear many selections of his music online though his nicely laid out catalog of works. Another nice highlight of the website is the program liner notes online. Take a look at the “Year in Yiddish Song” to get a flavor of the information available. According to his online bio, his “choral music has achieved an international reputation with choruses and at festivals in The Netherlands and Canada as well as in the United States.
