Ashkenaz, A Festival of New Yiddish Culture 2004 a festival of music in Toronto Canada this weekend. The Canadian Cabaret, taking place late Saturday night (10pm), Sept. 4th, is again hosted by Theresa Tova (she was very funny and effective last time), who is otherwise involved in a number of key programs and not to be missed.
Lights Celebrate Hanukkah Live in Concert is a high-definition special feature on PBS with a distinguished, diverse and dynamic ensemble of musical performers in celebration of the Jewish Festival of Lights. increasing numbers of Jews in America — both Americans and Israelis — are tuning
into Israeli music performances.
Singing in unintelligible gibberish as her hands strike the
darbuka drum with frantic intensity, the short, pretty brunette at center stage
holds the audience transfixed as she reaches the song’s crescendo.
When she sounds her final note, the audience rises for a standing ovation.
Though it is her New York debut concert, Israeli singer-songwriter Din Din Aviv is
no stranger here. The performance hall at the Museum of Jewish Heritage is packed
with Israeli fans of Aviv who live in New York and American Jews clutching her CD.…

Nee Ella Milch. Born 1954 In Haifa, Israel. Composer. Singer, pianist. Milch-Sheriff started as a child prodigy, writing her first compositions by the age of 12. While serving in the Israeli army, she continued to write and sing her songs. After army service, she returned to studies in composition under Prof. Tzvi Avni at the Rubin Academy of Music at the Tel-Aviv University where she graudated in composition. She studied vocal studies with Prof. Tamar Rachum and Dafna Cohen-Licht. Her output consists of opera, orchestral, chamber and vocal and popular music. Chai Variations on Eliahu HaNavi was inspired by the folk song
Eliahu HaNavi (Elijah the Prophet), often sung during the closing
service of the Jewish Sabbath. The letters of Chai, which means
life or living in Hebrew, symbolically stand for the number 18;
hence, 18 variations. I decided to give the performer a choice
regarding the ordering of the variations as a reflection of my
sense of performance as a collaboration between performer and
composer (and, for that matter, listener).…

The Judah Magnes Museum, located in Berkeley, California is open to the public. The Library contains Jewish recorded music and sheet music. Among the collections are a large number of 78 recordings. Geela-Rayzel Raphael is the co-creator of Shabbat Unplugged– a musical, rockin’ Shabbat service; sings with MIRAJ, an a cappella trio; and New Shalom, which offers lively interactive Shabbat services for synagogues and street performance. American composer. Born San Francisco May 4, 1891. Died October 24, 1952. Parents were German Jews. His grandfather came to the US in 1850. Born in California, the family went to NY, but took trips to California by train to visit relatives. For religious studies, Jacobi attended the Ethical Culture School (founded by Felix Adler in 1876), from 1901 to 1905, and again in 1906. Jacobi studied piano with Paul Gallico and Rafael Joseffy, and harmony and counter-point with Rubin Goldmark (who later also taught Aaron Copland and was head of Julliard composition faculty). His father died in 1911 and his mother in 1915. Jacobi inherited most of the money from his parent’s wine and real estate holdings, and so was able to live fairly comfortably during his life.…

Israel and Bulgaria from Nov 21 – Dec 1, 2008. The festival will feature the Sacred
Service by Ernest Bloch.
The festival marks the 65th anniversary of the heroic rescue of 50,000 Bulgarian
Jews during World War II and serves as a celebration of the preservation of life.
Individual performers as well as choirs are invited to perform in the festival.

Debbie Friedman has released a new CD “As You Go On Your Way: Schacharit –The Morning Prayers”. This just released CD has a combination of Debbie’s compositions and melodies to the liturgical texts of the Shacharit, the morning service. Some of the songs on the album are new, but many were composed as long ago as 1972. In a way this retrospective is a perspective piece. The “traditional” repetitions, for example are where the text is more traditional (for example, in the Amidah, the Imahot are included in the non- traditional setting.) The album helps the listener integrate the familiar tunes of Friedman with some chanting of segments of the service. Friedman states in her album “By praying we can understand how each Bracha, each blessing, helps us build a balanced and grateful life.
Jewish entertainer Craig Taubman and his
production company Craig N Co, will be producing the fourth annual ‘Let My
People Sing Festival – A four part Celebration of Spirit and Song’ from
April 5-12, coinciding with the Jewish festival of Passover.
“For four years, Let My People Sing has brought together an inspired group
of artists from around the world to celebrate the human spirit – now more
than ever, we need something to sing about” said Taubman. “I am
particularly pleased that this year’s events will raise awareness and money
for the Jewish Family Service Food and Hunger programs”.

It is truly with sadness that JMWC reports the loss of Debbie Friedman. Debbie Friedman’s funeral will take place Tuesday January 11 at 11am at Temple Beth Sholom in Santa Ana, California. She died Sunday morning, January 9, 2011. Her music lightened the hearts and lifted the spirits of hundreds of thousands of people throughout the world, and brought so many Jews closer to God. I had the privilege of being Debbie’s biographer for Encyclopedia Judaica. She was definitely one of the most, if not the most, spiritual person I’ve ever encountered, even in engaging in everyday conversation. Those that knew her or her music, will surely miss this tremendous musician and Jewish composer.

Now in its 51st year, Britain’s leading mixed voice Jewish choir,
presents a mixed bag of choral goodies at a concert at Belsize
Square Synagogue on November 12th.
The concert follows Benjamin Wolf‘s appointment as choirmaster
at the synagogue, and includes a performance by a new male-
voice quartet comprising young soloists Marc Finer, Eliot
Alderman and Benjamin Seifert, joined by Benjamin Wolf. Finer,
Alderman and Seifert are already well known to Jewish audiences
as cantors and cantorial soloists.

Making its U.S. debut, Amsterdam’s Apollo Ensemble performs a concert of Baroque Jewish musical treasures, one night only, at the Kennedy Center. A highlight is the American premiere of Dio, Clemenza e Rigore, an anonymously composed oratorio for an eighteenth-century Italian Jewish holiday synagogue service. Don’t miss this rarely performed work. The Amsterdam Jewish Music Projects Foundation will be taking part in
the Russian Centennial Celebration for Dmitri Shostakovich with the
programme “Zun mit a regn” (Sun and Rain) that is to be performed at the
Shostakovich Conferences in St. Petersburg on 12 and 13 October. The
programme, which premiered in the Netherlands, includes chamber music and
songs composed by Shostakovich himself and by his friends Mieczyslaw
Weinberg and Veniamin Basner. The central source of inspiration for the
works on the programme is the music of the Jewish people, oppressed in
Russia during the Stalin regime. The works will be performed by singer
Sovali (soprano), violinist Grigory Sedukh, cellist Alexander Oratovski and
pianist Paul Prenen. The performances are supported by the Wilhelmina E.
Jansen Fund.

The Jewish Music School exclusively teaches Jewish music under professional coaching and guidance.
The school offers students, irrespective of your background, a wide range of educational programs.
The Jewish Music School wants to provide a hospitable environment for everyone.
The educational program is aimed at all age groups, from musical forming for the youngest until education
for yougsters and adults. The levels vary from amateurs to (semi)professionals. The lessons – mainly in groups – are in Dutch, English or Hebrew. The teachers have a vast experience in teaching Jewish music in all its varieties from Ashkenazim (Eastern European Jews) as well as the Sephardim (Spanish-Portuguese Jews).

Tracks include “Cohen Owes Me 97 Dollars,” “I’m a Yiddish Cowboy” and other long-lost hits from the vaudeville stage of the early 20th century. premier summer arts day camp, will present its annual Festival Concerts, private
30-minute educational performances, just for Usdan students, at its on-site
1,000-seat McKinley Ampitheater, beginning Monday June 30.
A unique event this season will be the July 17 Concert of Remembrance and
Celebration; 60th Anniversary of Israel, hosted by the international concert

American. Singer. Songwriter. Julie Silver was raised in Newton, Massachusetts. By 18, she was leading song sessions throughout the Reform Jewish movement, and playing coffeehouses in and around Boston. She was graduated from Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts and was selected by her senior class to deliver the commencement address and sing an original song at Graduation in May, 1988. After college, Silver landed a job as an on-air personality at WMJX, Magic 106.7 in Boston, a contemporary music radio station. She started as a weekend DJ, and quickly became the host of Bedtime Magic, a top show of the Boston radio market. It was a natural fit for Silver who combined comic timing with a silky-smooth speaking voice.

A lyric soprano whose voice was often described as ravishing, Judith Raskin stressed purity of sound, clear diction, and the musical line. Born 21 June 1928, in New York, Judith grew up as an only child of teachers Harry A. Raskin and Lillian Mendelson Raskin. She studied both violin and piano as a child, but discovered singing, and sang in the glee club of Roosevelt High School in Yonkers. She studied voice with Anna Hamlin and acting with Ludwig Donath at Smith College, graduating 1949 with a BA, and along the way winning various scholarships and awards including the Harriet D. Barnum Award. Smith College later also awarded her an honorary MA in 1963. She won the Marian Anderson Scholarship for two years 1952 and 1953, and in 1956 won an award by the Musician s Club of New York.…

Israeli born clarinetist Michal Beit-Halachmi graduated from Givatayim Conservatory, where she studied with Eva Wasserman-Margolis. She continued her musical studies in the United States at Indiana University and Duquesne University, receiving her Bachelor of Music Degree in 1999. In 2002, she received her Master of Music degree from State University of New York at Stony Brook, under the tutelage of Charles Neidich. She has been a scholarship recipient of the America- Israel Cultural Foundation since 1997. She has toured Russia and Armenia with the American- Russian Young Artist Orchestra, performances at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival (Germany) and a concert in the Salzburg Festival with members of the Vienna Philharmonic. Other festival appearances include the Sarasota Chamber Music Festival, and Domaine Forget in Quebec, Canada. Ms. Beit-Halachmi has concertized extensively as a soloist and chamber musician throughout Israel and in Russia, Belgium, Hungary, Germany and the United States.…

This thoroughly researched biography, commissioned by Verna Fine, widow of the composer, is a highly readable entree not only to the life and works of Irving Fine, but to the history of the Brandeis University Department of Music. Irving Fine was a highly creative and innovative composer, and became the Walter W. Naumburg Professor of Music and Chairman of the School of Creative Arts at Brandeis. His inventive leadership of a newly formed Creative Arts Department would set the tone and course of study for the next 50 years. Fine had taught theory and music history at Harvard from 1939-50, when he joined the music faculty of Brandeis in Fall, 1950, as Lecturer in Music and Composer in Residence. Fine’s intellect led him to a style of “Stravinskian neoclassicism and romatically inflected serialism” that was to catch the imagination and close friendship of the American musical luminaries of the day, including Boston Symphony conductor Serge Koussevitzky, composers Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein, and his Brandeis colleagues Harold Shapero and Arthur Berger.…

British pianist. Born 2 Dec 1895 and died London 13 Nov. 1967. Eldest daughter of Florence White and Joseph Woolf Cohen. Studied with Tobias Matthay at the Royal Academy of Music (1912-1917). Known for her performances of Bach. Ralph Vaughan Williams dedicated a Concerto to her, which she premiered in 1933. Lover of the composer, Arnold Bax, but they were never married. She made the first recodings of his music. In 1948, she injured her hand, but continued to play for a time with one hand. Her memoirs areA Bundle of Time (1969).

Frank London‘s Klezmer Brass Band Allstars will perform a Hanukkah
concert at The Jewish Museum on Tuesday, December 27 at 7:30 pm. This band has
toured the world, bringing over the top exuberant energy to traditional Jewish roots
music. Their 2005 CD Carnival Conspiracy was Rolling Stone magazine’s #1 non-English
recording. This concert will feature joyous Jewish-Gypsy-Balkan-jazz party sounds
as well as favorite Hanukkah songs in new arrangements. Members of the band are
trumpeter/composer Frank London, drummer Aaron Alexander, tuba player Ron Caswell,
clarinetist Matt Darriau, trombonist Brian Drye, and accordionist Patty Farrell.
Special guests for this concert include multi-instrumentalist and singer Michael

So many Americans are just unaware of the accomplishments and achievements of Canadians. Possibly this is more ignorance than snobbery, but sometimes it seems to be a bit of both, without good reason for either. This snobbery particularly extends, it seems, in music. Our friends in Canada continually prove themselves extremely worthy, and yet notions to the otherwise persist. Fortunately, Canadians are a patient people and their accomplishments continue to shine and speak on their behalf. One such accomplished and distinguished musician is Alexander Brott. If you haven’t heard of him, then perhaps this memoir, published on the occasion of his 90th birthday, and written with the help of Betty Nygaard King, will be an antidote.
