On Wednesday evening, August 4th, Usdan Center students will present a
historic performance of one of Ernest Bloch’s greatest works, his Sacred
Service (Avodath Hakodesh) for orchestra, chorus, and baritone soloist.
Sacred Service has rarely been presented by young people, and its
performance on August 4th will be an artistic point of pride for Usdan, and
for its partner organization, UJA-Federation of New York.
Usdan’s senior orchestra and chorus will close the Center’s August 4th Gala
Concert with two parts of Sacred Service. The ensembles, composed of high
school-aged music students, will be conducted by Adam Glaser, a Usdan Center
alumnus, and the conductor of Juilliard’s top Pre-College orchestra.…

CANTORS AND CHOIRS BRING ON THE LIGHT AT RODEPH SHOLOM’S CHANUKAH EXTRAVAGANZA
The Cantors and Choirs of Congregation Rodeph Sholom will
celebrate Chanukah, the Festival of Lights, during Shabbat services at 6 PM on
Friday, December 9, 2011. The unique, intergenerational service will feature Cantor
Rebecca Garfein, Cantor Shayna De Lowe, and the volunteer adult and children’s
choirs from the synagogue. This year, the first night of Chanukah is Tuesday,
December 20, 2011.
“Chanukah celebrates miracles and the power to overcome hardship,” according to
Congregation Rodeph Sholom’s Senior Cantor, Rebecca Garfein. “For many people in
our country, this has been an especially tough year. Chanukah can help remind us
all of the everyday miracles in our lives.”
Highlights of the service will include Peter Yarrow’s “Light One Candle,” and “Bring
On the Light,” a piece by composer, singer, and actor Danny Maseng that was
commissioned by Congregation Rodeph Sholom for Chanukah in 2001.…

For Jews, the terms “assimilating” or “assimilation” are charged. Many unpleasant associations arise with thoughts of Jews “assimilating into” or disappearing altogether into, general society; becoming like others. As Jonathan Sarna says in the introduction to his new book, American Judaism,: “Through the years, ‘assimilation’ has become so freighted with different meanings, modifiers, and cultural associations that for analytical purposes it has become virtually meaningless. In some Jewish circles, indeed, the term is regularly employed as an epithet.” But “assimilating” is a term that the dictionary states, also means, “absorbing”, or “to take in and appropriate.” It can mean a “healthy appropriation of new forms and ideas.” In this book, David Schiller bravely makes distinctions with something that “happened in a more or less remote past or that is happening now.” Using the term in the title is not only eyecatching, but essential to his thesis about the nature of Jewish art music.…

Dear Members and Friends:
It is with sadness that I share with you the news of Jack Gottlieb’s passing.
A prolific composer, especially of sacred songs and choral music for the synagogue, Jack worked actively on behalf of Jewish music and served as President of the ASJM for a number of years. Also a scholar and noted author, his acclaimed books, Funny, It Doesn’t Sound Jewish: How Yiddish Songs and Synagogue Melodies Influenced Tin Pan Alley, Broadway and Hollywood, and, most recently, his memoire Working with Bernstein, about his years as assistant to Leonard Bernstein, received rave reviews. A biography of Jack Gottlieb’s distinguished career is appended below.
As Jack wished for no public funeral, those in the New York area wishing to mark his passing are invited to attend the services at Congregation Emanu-El on March 11 and 12, 2011, which will be devoted to his music.…

Origins:
The initial organization of the nascent IAJMC occurred in 2015. At long last the music of Hazzan Israel Alter is available on CD. Lois Welber recently released her cantorial CD, “Prayers of the High Holy Days: Shomeah Tefillah”. (Shomeah Tefillah – “…Who hears prayer” from Hineni) featuring the music of Hazzan Israel Alter. The CD focuses on music from “The High Holy Day Service” and “The Selichot Service” published by the Cantors Assembly. The original musical accompaniment is arranged by organist/composer Ernest Rakhlin and with pianist David Sparr. There is also one song included by Israel Goldfarb, “B’Sefer Chayim” (from Shirei T’shuvah –991900), which score is available through Transcontinental Music Publications.
These renditions are all sung with Welber’s strong mezzo-soprano in dedication to the 100th anniversary celebration of Temple B’Nai Israel in Revere, Massachusetts, where she has been cantor since 2000.…

British. Pianist. Born, London, 2 Feb. 1888, Died London, 11 January, 1971. Ida and Tobias Scharrer’s third child. She first studied with her mother, Ida. At the age of twelve she won a scholarship to study with Tobias Matthay at the Royal Academy of Music in London. At her first Royal Academy student concert in 1901, Scharrer played Chopin s Rondo in E flat Op. 16 & “with wonderful finish and very remarkable technical skill.” Her Debut was 1904. According to Naxos music, Myra Hess was not a cousin, but she was someone with whom Irene played duos often, and with whom she gave her last public concert in 1958. Early in her career Scharrer toured widely, performing in Germany, France, Holland, Belgium, Scandinavia and the United States.…

A vibrant new Summer Program in Yiddish language and culture is now available at Tel Aviv University. Under the auspices of Beth Shalom Aleichem, The Goldreich Family Institute for Yiddish Language, Literature, and Culture at Tel Aviv University and the Abraham Lerner Fund, this four-week program during the month of July 2006, offers intensive Yiddish instruction on campus at the beginners, intermediate, and advanced levels, and a rich afternoon program of lectures, tours, theatre, concerts, museums, films, and cultural events organized by YUNG YiDiSH in conjunction with Beth Shalom Aleichem. As students of the Lowy School for Overseas Students at Tel Aviv University whose credentials are recognized by universities world-wide, participants will receive 80 hours of language instruction (four credits) with highly qualified and experienced teachers in small classes and will be housed in dormitories adjacent to the campus.…

vocal talents of 18 musicians from across the spectrum of Jewish, Americana and World Music.
Born June 27, 1924, Hamburg, Germany. Composer and pianist. Studied in Berlin where she was the “youngest student ever accepted at the Stern Conservatory.” In 1935 her family began fleeing the Nazis, going first to Stockholm, where she studied at the Royal Academy of Music, and then Mexico City where she studied composition with Manuel M. Ponce. In 1946, Hindemith met her and invited her to study at Yale, where she earned a BA in 1950. She worked in several part-time jobs to support herself both by playing and teaching. In 1950s, moved to New York, composing a large number of works over 30 years including operas, orchestra pieces, lieder and chamber music and quite a few piano works. Her works include several with Jewish themes such as A Bird Flew Over Jerusalem.…

Born, February 25, 1890, near London where she died, November 25, 1965. Classical pianist. Educated at Royal Academy, graduating 1907. Appeared as soloist with Concertgebouw Orchestra as early as 1912, which started her intense career. During WWII, instituted concerts at London’s National Gallery and other public service work, for which she was honored with title Dame.
Yossi Fraenkel is a London-based Hassidic singer who travels around the world performing widely for Chassidic and Yiddish audiences. In 1998 he performed for British royal family. His recent stage performances include Simchas Beis Hashoevoat at Lubavitch World Headquarters in Crown Hights, Brooklyn, NY. Unfortunately his website doesn’t provide any clips of music, but he has contact information for those wishing bookings.

Schott Wergo announces the US release today (Feb. 14, 2006) of “Shalom
Comrade!: Yiddish Music in the Soviet Union 1928-1961” (Schott Wergo SM
1627-2), the 10th production in the Jewish Music Series of CDs edited by
ethnomusicologists Joel Rubin and Rita Ottens . “Shalom Comrade” and other productions of the Jewish Music Series are distributed by Harmonia Mundi USA.
ROSSI, MADAMA EUROPA DE’, highly accomplished professional singer in the court of the Gonzaga family in late 16th and early 17th century Mantua. The sister of the composer and musician Salamone De’ *Rossi , she was the daughter of Bonaiuto De’ Rossi and the wife of the prominent Jewish community leader David ben Elisha, whose last name was also De’ Rossi. Madama Europa had two sons, Bonaiuto (Azaria), who became a prominent Jewish leader and educator, and Angelo (Mordechai), who became a court lutanist in Turin and a banker. Madama Europa’s grandsons also served as skilled court musicians and bankers in Turin.
Madama Europa’s musical activities in Mantua are known through court salary records and letters from audience attendees. In one document of 1592–93 she is listed as “Europa di Rossi,” along with a group of other musicians, including Claudio Monteverdi.

“Joel Rubin is Assistant Professor of Music in the Performance Program at the University of Virginia. He attended the California Institute of the Arts and received a BFA in clarinet performance from the State University of New York at Purchase (1978). His principal teachers were Richard Stoltzman and Kalmen Opperman. Rubin holds a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from City University of London (2001). Rubin is an internationally acclaimed performer of Jewish instrumental klezmer music and hasidic music. In addition to performances with traditional musicians such as the Epstein Brothers (USA) and Moshe Berlin (Israel), he was the founder and clarinetist of some of the most internationally respected klezmer ensembles, including the Joel Rubin Jewish Music Ensemble and Brave Old World. Rubin’s fifth solo album, “Midnight Prayer”, came out in 2007 on Traditional Crossroads.…

Oxford University Press has released the scholarly work of Dr. Tina Fruhauf, The Organ and Its Music in German-Jewish Culture. The press descriptions states that the book “examines the powerful but often overlooked presence of the organ in synagogue music and the musical life of German-speaking Jewish communities. Tina Frühauf expertly chronicles the history of the organ in Jewish culture from the earliest references in the Talmud through the 19th century, when it had established a firm and lasting presence in Jewish sacred and secular spaces in central Europe. Frühauf demonstrates how the introduction of the organ into German synagogues was part of the significant changes which took place in Judaism after the Enlightenment, and posits the organ as a symbol of the division of the Jewish community into Orthodox and Reform congregations.…
