Event Description: Cantor Jacob Mendelson will lend his magnificent voice and
neshama (soul) to Erev Shabbat Services, followed by a viewing of his award winning
film, A Cantor’s Tale, and a question and answer session. On Saturday, following
the 10AM Shabbat Service, Cantor Mendelson will demonstrate and discuss the styles
of Cantors from the Golden Age, introduce his family zemirot (songs) to the
congregation, and explain that the DNA for hazzanut is contained therein.

Zuckerman appears to be a highly professional and successful modern choral arranger. You can hear many selections of his music online though his nicely laid out catalog of works. of Klezmer music and dance, KLEZMERQUERQUE 2008, will present a weekend of concerts,
dance parties, classes, and a lunch with music featuring world-renowned klezmer

New this fall from Hebrew College:
Online courses from the School of Jewish Music

I’m teaching an online course in Jewish music through Hebrew College of Boston. It’s called “Music of the Jewish People.” You won’t have to be able to read music, although of course, that always helps! However, it’s not actually required for taking this course. It’s all online, and there’s no particular “class time.” You “attend” the course completely online, get your resources and discussion online. The course is a college-level course and is intended for individuals who have completed high school and above.

You have to register and pay for the course registration through the Hebrew College.
After September 4th, there is a late registration fee, so register right away!

campus of Albuquerque Academy, this weeklong workshop features

SHIRAH, Community Chorus on the Palisades

Led by Matthew Lazar, Founding Director and Conductor, and Beth Robin, Pianist/Accompanist, the chorus performs sacred and secular music in Hebrew, English, Yiddish and Ladino. SHIRAH was formed in January, 1995 as a regional chorus specializing in the performance of the full spectrum of Jewish music. Its roster includes a multigenerational blend of amateur and professiional singers from the northern New Jersey/New York metropolitan area. Beit-Halachmi, Michal

Israeli born clarinetist Michal Beit-Halachmi graduated from Givatayim Conservatory, where she studied with Eva Wasserman-Margolis. She continued her musical studies in the United States at Indiana University and Duquesne University, receiving her Bachelor of Music Degree in 1999. In 2002, she received her Master of Music degree from State University of New York at Stony Brook, under the tutelage of Charles Neidich. She has been a scholarship recipient of the America- Israel Cultural Foundation since 1997. She has toured Russia and Armenia with the American- Russian Young Artist Orchestra, performances at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival (Germany) and a concert in the Salzburg Festival with members of the Vienna Philharmonic. Other festival appearances include the Sarasota Chamber Music Festival, and Domaine Forget in Quebec, Canada. Ms. Beit-Halachmi has concertized extensively as a soloist and chamber musician throughout Israel and in Russia, Belgium, Hungary, Germany and the United States.…

Irving Fine: An American Composer in His Time

This thoroughly researched biography, commissioned by Verna Fine, widow of the composer, is a highly readable entree not only to the life and works of Irving Fine, but to the history of the Brandeis University Department of Music. Irving Fine was a highly creative and innovative composer, and became the Walter W. Naumburg Professor of Music and Chairman of the School of Creative Arts at Brandeis. His inventive leadership of a newly formed Creative Arts Department would set the tone and course of study for the next 50 years. Fine had taught theory and music history at Harvard from 1939-50, when he joined the music faculty of Brandeis in Fall, 1950, as Lecturer in Music and Composer in Residence. Fine’s intellect led him to a style of “Stravinskian neoclassicism and romatically inflected serialism” that was to catch the imagination and close friendship of the American musical luminaries of the day, including Boston Symphony conductor Serge Koussevitzky, composers Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein, and his Brandeis colleagues Harold Shapero and Arthur Berger.…

White Christmas: The Story of an American Song

Writing a popular book about a popular song should merit some attention, so it’s not surprising that no less than four items appeared in The New York Times about this book. It’s supposed to be a book about one song. But, of course, it isn’t really. It’s a book about acculturation, assimilation and cultural impact. For readers of the Jewish Music WebCenter, these issues raised by White Christmas, may ultimately deal out the moral: we have only ourselves to “blame” –or– “congratulate” –as the view may be.

Irving Berlin, born as Izzy Baline, was of the generation of Jewish immigrants who wanted nothing more than to be thoroughly assimilated and thoroughly American. Berlin was one of the most successful examples of this, both in his personal and professional life.…

The Young Composers Award

The requested 2007 work is a set of 3 pieces performable as separate
pieces OR as a unit, with or without narrator. The work should be 10-12
performing minutes for cantor, SATB volunteer choir, piano and a single
instrument obligato (i.e., flute, violin, violoncello or other
instrument approved by chair before submission). The work should be in
Hebrew, using texts from Jewish liturgy, Bible, Jewish poetry or prose,
or a combination of the foregoing.

Deadline: Friday, January 5, 2007 (postmarked).
Eligibility: Jewish composers from any country born on or after January 1, 1972.

Bitton, Eyal

Canadian Composer. Born of Moroccan and German Jewish descent in Montreal, Canada on January 25, 1970. In 1971, his family and he moved to Kinshasa, Zaire where he attended TASOK (The American School of Kinshasa). He moved back to Montreal in 1978 and then attended United Talmud Torahs, Herzliah High School, Vanier College (DEC Pure & Applied Sciences), and McGill University (B.A. Jewish Studies). He has taught English at Ecole Maimonide and at College Francais. He served as President of the Sephardic Educational Center in Montreal, board member of the Spanish & Portuguese Synagogue, and YAD Co-Chair for Federation CJA Campaign 2001. He now lives in Toronto with his wife, Michèle Tredger. He is currently currently the Choir Director of Toronto’s Beth Tikvah Synagogue Choir, formerly conducted by Srul Irving Glick.…

Adrienne Cooper: A Yiddish Light Goes Out

Adrienne Cooper Khane-freyde bas beyle-buni z”l.

Adrienne Cooper (1946-2011), a leading light of Yiddish song died early last night, December 25, of cancer in Roosevelt Hospital in NYC. She was surrounded by her family and friends. Ms. Cooper, one of the world’s top figures of Yiddish music, brought Yiddish folk and theater music to modern audiences. She was a valued performer, not only for her impressive vocal qualities, but her masterful interpretive style and tremendous stage presence. She presented Yiddish song in such an expressive way that any audience could understand and appreciate it. Along with her feminist social conscience, she was a mentor and leader to thousands of musicians and students. She helped co-found “Klezkamp” and spread Yiddish culture throughout the world. She is survived by a daughter, Sara Gordon, and partner Marilyn Lerner, two brothers and her mother.…

Cogan, Susan

Born Toronto, Canada. Moved to Jerusalem, Israel in 1966 where she began singing at the age of 15. In the 1970s in the duo Susan & Fran, these Canadian women achieved fame, with their songs now standards in Israel. Recorded, “Susan Cogan o-n-e”, a collection of her original folk and soft-rock songs. Toured Canada in 1981. In 1991 Susan created the indie label and recording studio “Nomad Music” together with producer Paul Brosseau. Released CD “Space-Age Primitives” (1993). CD “Gypsy Hill(1999) CD “Mayim” (2001), a collection of popular Israeli songs ranging from the 1920’s to the 1970’s, in Hebrew. Song “Israel Shemah”.

Samsonov Cooper, Ruth

Israeli-born Canadian music pianist, teacher. Born 1918, Israel. Died, 1992 Toronto? Canada. Studied piano with Stefan Wolpe in Israel. Studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London, and earned the LRAM, 1944 in piano, voice, and conducting. Studied with Harold Craxton and Sir Henry Wood. Following the war, Samsonov returned to Israel and began performing and taught. In 1954, she moved to Toronto,Canada, where she taught piano. She was a Jewish music educator in Toronto for many years.

Research the vocabulary:

In looking for resources in Jewish music, the student should start not only with traditional Library of Congress Subject Headings such as “Jews–music” or “Synagogue music”, but keyword searching. Keyword searching is an important component of any search today and especially on Internet sources. Here are some samples of additional ways to access unknown materials and focus searching in catalogs, databases and online sources:

Both the Western Jewish History Center and the Museum’s Blumenthal Library have collections relating to music. The Western Jewish History Center has: the Flora Jacobi Arnstein collection, which contains some material about the composer Frederick Jacobi; the Sigmund Anker collection (Anker was a violinist with the San Francisco philharmonic); the Daisy Cohn collection; the Regina Gans collection; the Solomon Goldman collection (which contains letters from Ernest Bloch); another small Ernest Bloch collection; the Jennie Harris collection (Jennie Harris was a songwriter); the Ellis Kohs collection; the Reuben Rinder collection (Rinder was a cantor of San Francisco’s Emanu-El, 1913-1959); the Bashe Rubenchik Rosenbloom collection; the Oscar Weil collection (Wiel was a composer of light opera and songs); and a very small Darius Milhaud collection, relating to his opera, David.”The library is a significant repository of Jewish music and recordings and played a key role in the revival of Klezmer music… The library also contains sheet music of songs and poems written in German ghettos and concentration camps during World War II.” Both the Center and the Blumenthal Library are open, Monday-Thursday, 11am-5pm, by appointment only.…

Born in Beltz, Bessarabia. 21 October 1887. Died Cordoba, Argentia, 7 July 1956. Possibly the first women to bring Yiddish song to the concert stage in Russia, was known as an international balladist. Married Israel Heifetz and had one daughter, Toussia, 1917. Yiddish singer and opera star. She studied in Italy, and came to US. Operatic debut in La Boheme in 1902. Joined a group of intellectuals in Odessa with her husand and began to sing Yiddish songs. Due to the Russian revolution, escaped to Poland and then to America. Represented by Sol Hurok for her American debut at Carnegie Hall 29 October, 1922. Sang also in vaudeville Palace Theatre debut in 1927. “Mein Shtetle Belz” was written for her by Olshanetsky and Jacobs for the show “Song of the Ghetto.” Traveled throughout Canada and US on concert tours.…

Neshoma Orchestra

A sohisticated website introduces the Neshoma Orchestra of Cedarhurst, New York. Celebrating 20 years as a band performing “at weddings, dinners, Bar /Bat Mitzvahs, and organizational/corporate events worldwide,” the orchestra is an exemplar of the American Yeshivish and Modern Orthodox style of music. The group boasts a large number of instrumentalists and vocalists, although there are no individual bios on the website. Neshoma Orchestra has records with many top concert artists in the Jewish field. Michael Sojcher and Elly Zomick are the leaders of the group. YIVO holds one of the world’s largest collections of Eastern European Jewish sound recordings and Jewish sheet music. Materials must be consulted onsite. LIFE,”A CONCERT FOR SOUTH AFRICAN WOMEN & CHILDREN
Manhattan’s Congregation Rodeph Sholom and The Riverside Church are proud to
jointly present Celebrating Life!, a concert to raise funds for the Project People
Foundation (PPF) and the women and children of South Africa’s townships.

PPF is a New York-based non-profit organization founded in 1995 that builds bridges
between caring communities in the United States and women and students in South
Africa. PPF is helping South Africans as they strive for economic independence and
access to education despite the challenges of apartheid’s legacy, AIDS and poverty.

The concert will be held on October 29, 2009 at Congregation Rodeph Sholom, 7 West
83rd Street, Manhattan, starting at 6:30pm. It will feature a number of distinguished
musical artists, among them Diana Solomon-Glover, noted soprano soloist at The
Riverside Church, and Rebecca Garfein, Senior Cantor at Rodeph Sholom.…

The Columbia University Series on Klezmer Music and Yiddish Song

Three Monday Evening Events on November 22, November 29 and December 13, 2004, 8:00 PM

Curated by Deborah Strauss and Jeff Warschauer of the Strauss/Warschauer Duo, this series is dedicated to presenting performances and lectures that reflect the finest current research and creativity in the fields of klezmer music and Yiddish song.

The 2004 series begins on November 22 with THE FROG AND THE WOODCUTTER: Yiddish Story, Song and Klezmer Narrations presented by renowned Yiddish teacher and storyteller Peysakh Fiszman in a special collaboration with the Strauss/Warschauer Duo.

On November 29 acclaimed Jewish music scholar Dr. Mark Kligman will join the duo in THE SOUL YOU PLACED WITHIN ME: The Essence of Eastern European Khazones, Yiddish Song and Klezmer Music.

The series closes on December 13 with THE COLUMBIA KLEZMER BAND AND THE STRAUSS/WARSCHAUER DUO: Concert and Dance Party, featuring traditional and original klezmer music and Yiddish songs, followed by dance instruction and a dance party.…

This conference is designed for non-specialists, and covers some basic elements of the history of Jews in Europe, an overview of the different instruments, different origins of the repertoire, discussion about what makes the “Jewish sound” (and, ‘is there a “Jewish sound”?), a segment about “klezmer orchestration”. There will also be a review of main bands and artists in the world. Since some members of the group Magillah will attend, there will probably be a few pieces at the end.

Shtreiml is a group founded in Montreal, Quebec, Canada and features the 10-hole diatonic harmonica, piano, accordian, drums, and bass. Koleinu in Boston

Koleinu, Boston s Jewish Community Chorus, was founded in 2002 by Hazzan Scott
Sokol, of the Jewish Music Institue of Hebrew College, and by Larry Kozinn to
provide a place open to all to learn, sing and perform Jewish choral music. Carol
Marton, known for her work in Jewish choral music, is the founding Artistic
Director.

Since that time, Koleinu has given concerts for enthusiastic audiences at synagogues
all around Greater Boston, at Hebrew College and annually at Hebrew Senior Life. In
the fall of 2009, Koleinu represented Boston at an historic concert in Providence,
RI, marking the 70th anniversary of Kristallnacht a sold-out, multimedia production
that featured 200 adult and youth voices, full orchestra, and narration by Leonard
Nimoy. In the spring of 2008, Koleinu spearheaded Voices Raised Against Violence,
a collaborative concert of Jewish and Gospel music, to benefit an anti-violence and
leadership development program for Boston s youth.…

This eight session graduate seminar, YIVO’s first such seminar in music, will embrace an array of topics within the wider spectrum of Jewish Studies related to the music of Jewish experience or connection—secular-cultural as well as sacred-liturgical aspects—according to the interests and pursuits of the participants.

This seminar is open to graduate students within any department at all colleges, universities or conservatories. It is not restricted to those within music departments per se, but also open to those pursuing Jewish Studies in general—especially history, literature, theatre, liturgy, or other sub-fields of Jewish Studies—who may have special interest in related music in terms of context and interdisciplinary consideration.

With prior approval, undergraduate (college, university, or conservatory) students may also be permitted to participate—both those with an interest in a particular area of Jewishly-related music and those who may be pursuing related term papers or projects.…

Isle of Klezbos Performs at Jewish Museum SummerNights Series

The all women’s klezmer sextet, ISLE OF KLEZBOS, will perform at the Jewish Museum’s “SummerNights” Series on Thursday, July 25 2013 as the final concert. Isle of Klezbos plays imaginative versions of eclectic Eastern European-rooted Jewish folk music, Yiddish swing and tango.

CANTORS AND CHOIRS BRING ON THE LIGHT AT RODEPH SHOLOM’S CHANUKAH EXTRAVAGANZA
The Cantors and Choirs of Congregation Rodeph Sholom will
celebrate Chanukah, the Festival of Lights, during Shabbat services at 6 PM on
Friday, December 9, 2011. The unique, intergenerational service will feature Cantor
Rebecca Garfein, Cantor Shayna De Lowe, and the volunteer adult and children’s
choirs from the synagogue. This year, the first night of Chanukah is Tuesday,
December 20, 2011.

“Chanukah celebrates miracles and the power to overcome hardship,” according to
Congregation Rodeph Sholom’s Senior Cantor, Rebecca Garfein. “For many people in
our country, this has been an especially tough year. Chanukah can help remind us
all of the everyday miracles in our lives.”

Highlights of the service will include Peter Yarrow’s “Light One Candle,” and “Bring
On the Light,” a piece by composer, singer, and actor Danny Maseng that was
commissioned by Congregation Rodeph Sholom for Chanukah in 2001.…

International Jewish Music Festival — Amsterdam

The 15th edition of the International Jewish Music Festival will be
held in the brand new concert halls of the Amsterdam Conservatory. We welcome back the
winners from last year’s international competition for a weekend filled with
music.

The ensembles will give concerts and workshops in the most diverse
Jewish music sub-genres: hip-hop and reggae for kids, Yiddish song, Sephardic
music, klezmer and Balkan music, close harmony and classical.

The free Open Podium gives starting ensembles and soloists a chance to

3 Choirs Come together for 40th Anniversary

Zamir Chorale of Boston announces that there will be a performance with the Jerusalem Academy Choir at Northeastern’s New Fenway Center in a special three-choir concert at
on October 26 at 7:30 p.m.

Artistic Director Joshua Jacobson, who is also Director of Choral Activities at
Northeastern, will conduct sets by NU’s choir and Zamir, followed by a performance
by the Jerusalem Academy Chamber Choir (JACC), considered one of the finest musical
groups in Israel. For the finale, all three choirs will share the stage.
The JACC, comprised of 30 music students and led by Stanley Sperber, is also
celebrating its 40th anniversary. Sperber, founded the Zamir Chorale in 1960 in New York and inspired Jacobson to form the Zamir Chorale of Boston in 1969.…
