The Jewish Music School exclusively teaches Jewish music under professional coaching and guidance.
The school offers students, irrespective of your background, a wide range of educational programs.
The Jewish Music School wants to provide a hospitable environment for everyone.
The educational program is aimed at all age groups, from musical forming for the youngest until education
for yougsters and adults. The levels vary from amateurs to (semi)professionals. The lessons – mainly in groups – are in Dutch, English or Hebrew. In six weeks time the International Jewish Music Festival 2012 will
start. Mames Babegenush and Gerard Edery will kick off the event on
Wednesday 10th October with an opening concert in the Portugese
Synagoge. On Thursday and Friday in the Compagnietheater,
more than 100 musicians from 14 countries will try and secure their
place in the finals on Saturday. On Sunday it’s your turn! Take
your pick from six workshops on offer or visit the Jewish cultural
market. A winners’ concert and jam session concludes the
festivities.

Presidents’ Day weekend.
The Southwest’s annual celebration
of Klezmer music and dance, KLEZMERQUERQUE 2008, will present a weekend of concerts,
dance parties, classes, and a lunch with music featuring world-renowned klezmer
artists as well as many local artists. The annual event will take place from
February 15-17 (Friday evening through Sunday afternoon) at Albuquerque’s
Congregation Nahalat Shalom which is located on 3606 Rio Grande Blvd. NW (between

entering its 42nd season and declared a ‘Best O’f class or camp for 2009 by
TimeOutNY/Kids, NY Metro Parents and Long Island Press, will open its series
of Festival Concerts, private educational performances for its students, on
Monday June 29 at the Center¹s 200-acre woodland campus. These will be in
addition to many special workshops that will offer by the visiting artists
for Usdan students. The Center¹s 2009 season runs from June 29 to August 14.

Chai Variations on Eliahu HaNavi was inspired by the folk song
Eliahu HaNavi (Elijah the Prophet), often sung during the closing
service of the Jewish Sabbath. The letters of Chai, which means
life or living in Hebrew, symbolically stand for the number 18;
hence, 18 variations. I decided to give the performer a choice
regarding the ordering of the variations as a reflection of my
sense of performance as a collaboration between performer and
composer (and, for that matter, listener).…

While serving in the Israeli army, she continued to write and sing her songs. After army service, she returned to studies in composition under Prof. Tzvi Avni at the Rubin Academy of Music at the Tel-Aviv University where she graudated in composition. She studied vocal studies with Prof. Tamar Rachum and Dafna Cohen-Licht. Her output consists of opera, orchestral, chamber and vocal and popular music. Her works have had numerous performances in Israel and abroad. American composer. Born San Francisco May 4, 1891. Died October 24, 1952. Parents were German Jews. His grandfather came to the US in 1850. Born in California, the family went to NY, but took trips to California by train to visit relatives. For religious studies, Jacobi attended the Ethical Culture School (founded by Felix Adler in 1876), from 1901 to 1905, and again in 1906. Jacobi studied piano with Paul Gallico and Rafael Joseffy, and harmony and counter-point with Rubin Goldmark (who later also taught Aaron Copland and was head of Julliard composition faculty). His father died in 1911 and his mother in 1915. Jacobi inherited most of the money from his parent’s wine and real estate holdings, and so was able to live fairly comfortably during his life.…

It is truly with sadness that JMWC reports the loss of Debbie Friedman. Debbie Friedman’s funeral will take place Tuesday January 11 at 11am at Temple Beth Sholom in Santa Ana, California. She died Sunday morning, January 9, 2011. Her music lightened the hearts and lifted the spirits of hundreds of thousands of people throughout the world, and brought so many Jews closer to God. I had the privilege of being Debbie’s biographer for Encyclopedia Judaica. She was definitely one of the most, if not the most, spiritual person I’ve ever encountered, even in engaging in everyday conversation. Those that knew her or her music, will surely miss this tremendous musician and Jewish composer.

People Sing Festival – A four part Celebration of Spirit and Song’ from
April 5-12, coinciding with the Jewish festival of Passover.
“For four years, Let My People Sing has brought together an inspired group
of artists from around the world to celebrate the human spirit – now more
than ever, we need something to sing about” said Taubman. “I am
particularly pleased that this year’s events will raise awareness and money
for the Jewish Family Service Food and Hunger programs”.
Debbie Friedman has released a new CD “As You Go On Your Way: Schacharit –The Morning Prayers”. This just released CD has a combination of Debbie’s compositions and melodies to the liturgical texts of the Shacharit, the morning service. Some of the songs on the album are new, but many were composed as long ago as 1972. In a way this retrospective is a perspective piece. The “traditional” repetitions, for example are where the text is more traditional (for example, in the Amidah, the Imahot are included in the non- traditional setting.) The album helps the listener integrate the familiar tunes of Friedman with some chanting of segments of the service. Friedman states in her album “By praying we can understand how each Bracha, each blessing, helps us build a balanced and grateful life.

The Western Jewish History Center has: the Flora Jacobi Arnstein collection, which contains some material about the composer Frederick Jacobi; the Sigmund Anker collection (Anker was a violinist with the San Francisco philharmonic); the Daisy Cohn collection; the Regina Gans collection; the Solomon Goldman collection (which contains letters from Ernest Bloch); another small Ernest Bloch collection; the Jennie Harris collection (Jennie Harris was a songwriter); the Ellis Kohs collection; the Reuben Rinder collection (Rinder was a cantor of San Francisco’s Emanu-El, 1913-1959); the Bashe Rubenchik Rosenbloom collection; the Oscar Weil collection (Wiel was a composer of light opera and songs); and a very small Darius Milhaud collection, relating to his opera, David.”The library is a significant repository of Jewish music and recordings and played a key role in the revival of Klezmer music… The library also contains sheet music of songs and poems written in German ghettos and concentration camps during World War II.” Both the Center and the Blumenthal Library are open, Monday-Thursday, 11am-5pm, by appointment only.…

New York. Congregation Rodeph Sholom’s Senior Cantor,
Rebecca Garfein, and Cantorial Intern, Jennifer Strauss-Klein will
commemorate Kristallnacht-the Night of Broken Glass, with the music of
renowned Viennese Cantor, Salomon Sulzer and Berlin composer, Louis
Lewandowski at 6p.m., Friday, November 3, 2006 during Shabbat services.
Guest Cantor, Dr. Bruce Ruben, newly appointed Director of the Hebrew
Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion’s School of Sacred Music will
also participate in this special service. Rodeph Sholom’s Organist, Dr.
John Schuder and augmented professional choir, will accompany the
cantors. This event is free of charge and the entire community is
invited to attend. Rodeph Sholom is located at 7 West 83rd Street (off

Melodia Women’s Choir of NYC,/bwill delight New York audiences with three exciting and rarely-performed works by Israeli composer Yehezkel Braun in its upcoming concert, November Song. The three works by the highly-regarded composer from Tel Aviv are written to songs and ballads by H.N.Bialik, Israel�s first national poet and one of the country�s most revered and influential writers.
The concert will be presented on November 20, 2004 at 7:30PM, at St. Peter�s Church in Chelsea (346 W. 20th St., between 8th and 9th Avenues) in New York City.
Congregation Rodeph Sholom’s Senior Cantor, Rebecca Garfein, Associate Cantor, Shayna De Lowe and Cantorial Intern, Ben Ellerin will commemorate the 75th Anniversary of Kristallnacht-“the Night of Broken Glass”, with the rarely performed and glorious music of renowned Viennese Cantor, Salomon Sulzer and Berlin composer, Louis Lewandowski at 6p.m., Friday, November 8, 2013 during Shabbat services. Also featured will be the newly commissioned song-cycle, “Perhaps a Butterfly,” composed by Eliot Bailen in memory of Cantor Garfein’s great-grandmother, Settchen Feist who after being sent to Theresienstadt, subsequently perished in Auschwitz. The song-cycle utilizes four poems written by children of Theresienstadt.
Rodeph Sholom’s Organist, J. David Williams and an augmented professional choir, will accompany the cantors. Kristallnacht occurred exactly 75 years ago on the night of November 9, 1938 and marked the beginning of the Holocaust.…

Cantor Benjie Ellen Schiller is both the first woman to be a full time faculty member at the School of Sacred Music at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in New York and a composer of sacred music. Born in New York on April 14, 1958 to Miriam and Nathan Schiller, Cantor Schiller studied voice and composition, and received a B. M. in Theory and Composition at Boston University in 1980. She continued graduate studies there in voice and choral conducting, and shortly thereafter, married Rabbi Lester Bronstein in June, 1981.
She attended the School of Sacred Music of Hebrew Union College in New York and was invested in 1987. Her Master Thesis composition was “Life Song Cycle.” Cantor Schiller also became a full time faculty member and taught courses in cantillation, basic nusach (prayer modes) and the in-depth study of repertoire for Shabbat.…

The Amsterdam Jewish Music Projects Foundation will be taking part in
the Russian Centennial Celebration for Dmitri Shostakovich with the
programme “Zun mit a regn” (Sun and Rain) that is to be performed at the
Shostakovich Conferences in St. Petersburg on 12 and 13 October. The
programme, which premiered in the Netherlands, includes chamber music and
songs composed by Shostakovich himself and by his friends Mieczyslaw
Weinberg and Veniamin Basner. The central source of inspiration for the
works on the programme is the music of the Jewish people, oppressed in
Russia during the Stalin regime. The works will be performed by singer
Sovali (soprano), violinist Grigory Sedukh, cellist Alexander Oratovski and
pianist Paul Prenen. The performances are supported by the Wilhelmina E.
Jansen Fund.
