Curated by Deborah Strauss and Jeff Warschauer of the Strauss/Warschauer Duo, this series is dedicated to presenting performances and lectures that reflect the finest current research and creativity in the fields of klezmer music and Yiddish song.
The 2004 series begins on November 22 with THE FROG AND THE WOODCUTTER: Yiddish Story, Song and Klezmer Narrations presented by renowned Yiddish teacher and storyteller Peysakh Fiszman in a special collaboration with the Strauss/Warschauer Duo.
On November 29 acclaimed Jewish music scholar Dr. Mark Kligman will join the duo in THE SOUL YOU PLACED WITHIN ME: The Essence of Eastern European Khazones, Yiddish Song and Klezmer Music.

In his latest book, Funny, It Doesn’t Sound Jewish, composer and
author, Jack Gottlieb chronicles how Jewish songwriters and composers
transformed American popular music of the mid-twentieth-century. Dr.
Gottlieb will play piano and show vintage images as he illustrates
the connection, citing instances where Yiddish songs and cantorial
music were adapted by Jewish songwriters as they penned tunes for Tin
Pan Alley, Broadway, and Hollywood. The book (which includes a CD)

The Melbourne (Australia) Jewish Male Voice Choir has been in existence for over a year, has performed with the Johannesburg Jewish Male Choir at the Melbourne Concert Hall in June ’99, and had it’s own concert in December ’99 at St. Kilda Synagogue. Born in Lodz in 1898. Died, (Argentina?) 1979. Composer, conductor, performer, and educator. Wajner came from a family of cantors. He studied viola, conducting, at the State Conservatory in Warsaw. Between the years 1915 and 1939, he was a prize winning violist and toured Europe, taught singing and music in various schools, and directed various choirs and orchestras. He was musical director of the Polish Military Theater in Lublin, as well as acting as Minister of Religion and Culture.
He was called to service in the Polish army and was imprisoned by the Russians on September 17, 1939 and held in Rovno, Volinia.…

Possibly the first women to bring Yiddish song to the concert stage in Russia, was known as an international balladist. Married Israel Heifetz and had one daughter, Toussia, 1917. Yiddish singer and opera star. She studied in Italy, and came to US. Operatic debut in La Boheme in 1902. Joined a group of intellectuals in Odessa with her husand and began to sing Yiddish songs. Due to the Russian revolution, escaped to Poland and then to America. Represented by Sol Hurok for her American debut at Carnegie Hall 29 October, 1922. Sang also in vaudeville Palace Theatre debut in 1927. “Mein Shtetle Belz” was written for her by Olshanetsky and Jacobs for the show “Song of the Ghetto.” Traveled throughout Canada and US on concert tours.…

Born 1896 in Proskurov, Russia. Died, May 27, 1984 in New York City. Casman came to US in early 1900s. She began in the Yiddish theater as a child star. She performed in Yiddish theater in South America, Europe and throughout the US playing comic Yiddish roles. Nahama Sandrow, in her bookVagabond Stars, refers to Casman as “one of the rare female kuplétists, tiny and round…” The kuplét was a comedic patter song that had little to do with the action of a show. In some shows Casman combined this with the “red hot mama” style where she “starts to shake her bosom, which makes one cozy curve from shoulder to waist. She vibrates all over, till even the absurd red flower sticking up on top of her head jiggles, too and she looks down at her own chest with such childlike surprise and satisfaction that the audience roars with delight.” She performed in shows such as “The Girl from Argentina” and “The Drunkard”.…

Beyond the Pale, a folk, roots, and klezmer group from Toronto, will try something a little different… They will play MOZART for CBC Radio on, Jan 26 & 27. They’ll be performing in a unique musical event on January 26 at Glenn Gould Studio as part of CBC Radio Two’s “Mozart 250” celebrations. The show A New World of Mozart will feature “an evening of creative musical homage to Mozart” featuring Beyond the Pale, the Dunhuang Chamber Ensemble (traditional Chinese), The Creaking Tree String Quartet (modern bluegrass), and Autorickshaw (South Asian jazz fusion). Michel Pardes has released a CD called Chansons Juives and has some videos on YouTube as well. This one is in French, but set in a kibbutz in Israel.
One song from the album is about the Kibbutz, Ayelet Hashahar. (Ayelet HaShahar is a kibbutz in northern Israel. Located on the Rosh Pina – Metulla road, it is approximately 35 kilometers south of Kiryat Shmona.) A lot of tourists stay there and there’s a museum for the Hazor dig. Pardes sings the praises of this kibbutz in his song. Not all the songs on the album are the same in style.

The work, with music by Elizabeth Swados, writer/director, Cecilia Rubino, the poet, Paula Finn, and designed by Bonnie Roche-Bronfman, commemorates the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire of 1911. The fire was a completely devastating tragedy that resulted in the loss of life of over 146 working Jewish and Italian girls. Trapped behind locked doors, the tragedy led to workplace reforms and galvanized the Progressive Movement. To read more about this event see:
