American. composer. Recent CD of orchestral music called Piping the Earth, just released on Capstone Records (CPS 8727). Her Shapirit, Yefehfiah (Beautiful Dragonfly) was performed in January, 2005 by the New York Treble Singers in New York. Currently, Judith Shatin is William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of Music and Director of the Virginia Center for Computer Music of the McIntire Department of Music at the University of Virginia. She founded the VCCM in 1988. Prof. Shatin received a AB from Douglass College, 1971, a MM from Julliard in 1974 and the MFA 1976 and PhD from Princeton in 1979. She started teaching at the University of Virginia in 1979 and has been there since. Her awards, commissions and prizes are numerous, spanning over 25 years of accomplishment and are listed on her website at the University of Virginia.…

Irving Fine – An American Composer in His Time

A new book about Irving Fine, by Phillip Ramey was published a few months ago by Pendragon Press. Fine was the Brandeis University composer who founded the Music Department and began the landmark performing arts festival at Brandeis. Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Richard Wernick, who studied under Fine at Brandeis, wrote the Forward. This book is being published by Pendragon Press in association with The Library of Congress.

Organizational memberships include libraries, universities, and synagogues. The Society presents a series of musical programs covering a wide range of Jewish music: sacred, secular, folk, concert and theater, often held at the Center for Jewish History in New York City. The Society also arranges and presents lectures on Jewish music by experts in their field. The American Society for Jewish Music publishes Musica Judaica, a scholarly journal in Jewish music. A quarterly Newsletter is also distributed to members. To encourage new compositions and performances, the Society established the Cantor Aaron J. Libraries and Archives with Jewish Music Collections

Milken Archive of American Jewish Music

The Milken Archive of American Jewish Music, under the artistic direction of Neil Levin, has been working on producing a CD set of 50-80 CDs that will be a comprehensive examination of a diverse body of Jewish music. There will be over 700 titles of pieces of music in the collection when completed. The recording project is only the first of several ambitious projects planned, including a comprehensive history of Jewish music in the United States, and a working archive including audio recordings, videotaped oral histories, and composer interviews and other materials. The Archive is preparing to comission curricula for study at high school and college levels. Other notables involved with the project, which includes several composers and musicologists, are: Samuel Adler, Ofer Ben-Amots, Martin Bookspan, Charles Davidson, Henry Fogel, Lukas Foss, Morton Leifman, Gerard Schwarz, Paul Schwendener, Barry Serota, and Edwin Seroussi.…

SHIRAH, Community Chorus on the Palisades

Led by Matthew Lazar, Founding Director and Conductor, and Beth Robin, Pianist/Accompanist, the chorus performs sacred and secular music in Hebrew, English, Yiddish and Ladino. SHIRAH was formed in January, 1995 as a regional chorus specializing in the performance of the full spectrum of Jewish music. Its roster includes a multigenerational blend of amateur and professiional singers from the northern New Jersey/New York metropolitan area. “Traveling the Yiddishland” by Dmitri Slepovitch presented by the National Yiddish Theatre – Folksbiene – is a musical/ multimedia journey across the routes of the Yiddish song’s history in the 20th century Eastern Europe– brought to the modern audiences through the original videos, live singing, playing, and DJ-ing.

The program is based on the Yiddish song, traditional and original Litvak klezmer tunes, documentary footage, and storytelling. But most importantly, it is a multi-vectored dialog that creates a link to the rich traditional heritage.

The American Seminary for Contemporary Judaism

New Cantorial school which has finished its first year of teaching the art of Chazzanut. Located at the Baldwin Jewish Center in Baldwin, New York. The Seminary is new,having opened in October, 2004, but it is affiliated with the Jewish Ministers Cantors Association of America (JMCA) which was foundin 1896 as the Hazanim Farband iand is the oldest cantorial association in the United Sttes. The JMCA will serve all denominations of Jewish cantors. One of the main advocacies of the group will be the preservation of nusach. The program of study is based on the “nuts and bolts” of what cantors need to know. The perspective is essentially Orthodox, although the Conservative and Reform perspective are also explained to students. The Seminary is at 885 East Seaman Avenue, Baldwin, NY 11510.…

Herman Berlinski: From the World of My Father [8.559446]

The Milken Archive of American Jewish Music has released a CD of four works for the synagogue and the concert hall by German-born, American composer and organist Herman Berlinski. These works reflect his rich, post-Romantic musical language, eclectic musical style, and depth of Jewish inspiration. This new disc complements the Milken Archive’s 2004 release of the composer’s Avodat Shabbat, a large-scale setting of the Sabbath evening liturgy according to the American Reform prayerbook. It brings to 45 the number of recordings released since the Milken Archive CD series was launched in September 2003.

Jews are a people of the Book as much as we are a people of the Note. The Musical Note, that is. We can trace the first Jewish choral work to Biblical times, where the entire nation made their choral debut in a paean to God for saving them from the hands of the pursuing Egyptians.

“My victory and song is G-d, that was my salvation.”

That can certainly help to explain the waves of passion and excitement that filled Tel Aviv’s Mann Auditorium during the Zimriya¹s, the world assembly of choirs, 50-year jubilee concert celebration that took place last month.…
