Yiddish singer living in Canada, Lenka has been involved with Yiddish music for years. Her arrangements are really quite unusual and satisfying. Lenka was raised in Prague, and her musical training included theater work and vocal training at the Prague Conservatory. Her album “Deep Inside,” which has received excellent reviews, is featured on the website. Many of the “lyrics deal with ‘Jewish’ topics: misunderstandings between observant/less observant Jews, the role of Yiddish, finding one’s Jewish identity, and issues from Israel.” Her Latest CD is “Peace Offerings.”

Israeli folklorist and ethnomusicologist, teacher and preserver of Ladino language and culture. Born, Milan, Italy, 1939 to a Sephardic family. Her mother Diana Hadjes and father Alfredo were from Aydin, Turkey. She studied at the Jewish Community School and the University in Milan. Married Aharon Cohen, now the Director General of The National Authority for Ladino and its Culture, in 1960. She received a B.A. in Italian Literature, Judeo-Spanish and Folklore in 1987 at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. From 1974-1994 made a living as a records specialist at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jerusalem. Since 1996 has been on the faculty of Ben Gurion University in the Negev as a Judeo-Spanish language instructor, and also teaches at Midreshet Amalia Jerusalem (since 1991). Since 1998 she has taught a course for Ladino Teachers, organized by The National Authority for Ladino and its Culture, in Jerusalem.…

Cantor Judy Greenfeld did her undergraduate work at the University of Arizona and received her ordination as well as a Master s Degree in Jewish Sacred Music from the Academy for Jewish Religion, California (www.ajrca.org), a pluralistic rabbinical and cantorial seminary based in Los Angeles. Program will air on east-London based ethnic radio station NuSounradio for an hour
every evening at 7pm.
Presenters Zev Gruber and Yitzchok Mordfield will bring listeners some of the latest
and greatest hits Up until June 2007, Soundradio 1503AM carried several Jewish
programmes, but upon its collapse that ended.

The Azrieli Music Project (AMP), a Canadian philanthropic organization, announced that composer Wlad Marhulets is the winner of the inaugural Azrieli Prize in Jewish Music for his Klezmer Clarinet Concerto. Marhulets, who submitted a completed orchestral work on a Jewish theme or subject – along with applicants from around the world – has been granted the second of two $50,000 prizes, which were offered for the first time by the Azrieli Foundation. In September 2015, the Azrieli Music Project announced that Brian Current was the winner of the inaugural Azrieli Commissioning Competition for Canadian composers. They are available in PDF format at http://www.cantors.org/ca_jsm_docs.php along with their conference proceedings. These journal issues are searchable in a general way… that is, a search term will be found from the search in all documents with that word, but the reader will have to open the specific issues (pdf) and then use his/her Adobe Acrobat reader’s “find box” to pinpoint the keyword in the document. The reader must search each of the documents separately for the search term. Ruth Levin has produced Word and Melody, an anthology of music to Yiddish poetry by her father, published by I.L. Peretz Publications. The anthology – with texts in Yiddish, English and Hebrew — was launched in Tel Aviv this past weekend. Reminiscences and performances were provided by Alexei Blausov, Regina Drukker, Benny Hendel, Melech Ziv, Prof. Zvi Yavetz, Vera Levinski, Ella Levin, Lev Levin, Ruth Levin, Nechama Lifshitz, Arye Lish, Avishai Fish and Moti Shmit. The anthology contains 49 melodies to songs by 21 Yiddish poets as well photographs and drawings, piano arrangements by Hanan Winternitz, and a preface and epilogue written by Ruth Levin.

Mendelssohn is have a good year in 2009. Last month in New York, the Museum of Jewish Heritage held concerts of some “new” Mendelssohn works… newly rehearsed after some 100 years. This Saturday Feb 21, 2009, the Austin Civic Orchestra will perform “Fantasy and Variations for Two Pianos and Orchestra on the Gypsy March from Weber’s ‘Preziosa’ ” by Felix Mendelssohn. This will be the first time this piece has been heard since 1833. The manuscript piece, never published, and first performed by Ignaz Moscheles and Felix Mendelssohn was set aside and later owned by Anton Rubinstein. After he donated it, it was lost in the archive of the St. Petersburg Conservatory in Russia for over a hundred years. Southwestern University professor J. Michael Cooper and Jonathan Bellman of the University of Northern Colorado, have painstakingly reconstructed the work.…

The C & RL News, of the Association of College and Research Libraries Reports in the February 2013 issue that two archival repositories have a new innovative project to create translations from historic Yiddish newspapers and journals. The Kheel Center for Labor-Management Documentation and Archives at Cornell University and the Modern Records Centre at the University of Warwick in the UK are jointly digitizing more than 1500 pages from Yiddish newspapers and journals. These papers are from the 19th and early 20th centuries, and were originally written for working-class Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe.
The project will translate publications such as The Ladies’ Garment Worker. The project is looking for volunteers to translate the documents from Yiddish to English. People can help by participating in the project.…

Playbill carries an article about a new Jewish musical scheduled for this season’s Spring event in DC. Called David in Shadow and Light, it’s based on the life of King David, with libretto by Yehuda Hyman, music by Daniel Hoffman, choreography by Peter DiMuro and the Liz Lerman Dance Exchange and direction by Nick Olcott.The musical, commissioned by Theater J together with the Center for Jewish Culture and Creativity, will be presented next Spring in May 6-June 22, 2008.

The New York Jewish Week ran an article at the end of March on Julie Rosewald, the “Forgotten Cantor”. George Robinson, a long-time music critic and observer of Jewish religious culture, interviewed Judith Pinnolis about her article on Julie Rosewald that appeared in the American Jewish Archives Journal. About 10 years ago I was drafted as music director for a
puppet theater production of “The Dybbuk” here in Portland.
(Since then I’ve worked on two other productions of the same
play, leading me to speculate that while possession might
not actually be 9/10 of the law, it was certainly approaching
9/10 of my musical activity.)
After all this time, “Between Two Worlds/The Dybbuk” has been remounted, and this time it’s going on the road. The American Society for Jewish Music sends out this sad announcement about the passing of Jack Gottlieb.
Dear Members and Friends:
It is with sadness that I share with you the news of Jack Gottlieb’s passing.
A prolific composer, especially of sacred songs and choral music for the synagogue, Jack worked actively on behalf of Jewish music and served as President of the ASJM for a number of years. Also a scholar and noted author, his acclaimed books, Funny, It Doesn’t Sound Jewish: How Yiddish Songs and Synagogue Melodies Influenced Tin Pan Alley, Broadway and Hollywood, and, most recently, his memoire Working with Bernstein, about his years as assistant to Leonard Bernstein, received rave reviews. A biography of Jack Gottlieb’s distinguished career is appended below.
As Jack wished for no public funeral, those in the New York area wishing to mark his passing are invited to attend the services at Congregation Emanu-El on March 11 and 12, 2011, which will be devoted to his music.…

Noah Solomon and C Lanzbom are the two artists behind Soul Farm. They first met in Israel in Modii m (founded by the late Shlomo Carlebach) in the 1990 s . They began performing together in Israel with their own band and also accompanied Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach. After a few years, they moved to NYC where they formed the group Inasense which later became Soulfarm. The website features clips of music, photos, CDs for sale and news of their activities. Rochelle Zucker decided to dedicate a radio show to the memory of the French Yiddish singer, composer and author Jacques Grober.
Grober was born in Paris in 1951 – the son of Holocaust Survivirs from
Poland. From about 1980 until his death in 2006 – when he was just in his
prime, Grober was vital and important force of the Yiddish music scene in
France. He studied Yiidish singing with the Yiddish legend Sarah Gorby. The more
he became involved with Yiddish, the language of his parents and
grandparents, the more he realized how important it was to create
contemporaty songs in Yiddish so that Yiddish could be continue being heard
as a living language.…
