National Endowment for the Arts celebrates master folk and traditional artists by awarding fellowships each year. The all women’s klezmer sextet, ISLE OF KLEZBOS, will perform at the Jewish Museum’s “SummerNights” Series on Thursday, July 25 2013 as the final concert. Isle of Klezbos plays imaginative versions of eclectic Eastern European-rooted Jewish folk music, Yiddish swing and tango.

Tzipora Jochsberger, Z”L, died at 96 in Jerusalem

The Jewish music world mourns the passing of music educator Tzipora Jochsberger in Jerusalem on Oct. 28 at the age of 96. (1920-2017) Dr. Jochsberger led the New Jerusalem Conservatory and Academy of Music.   Jochsberger was Director of The Hebrew Arts School (now known as Kaufman Music Center) in New York until her retirement in 1985. Jochsberger may be best known to many as the creator and executive producer  of The Israel Music Heritage Project, a 10-volume video series exploring  the music and culture of Jewish communities around the world.

Hilda Jochsberger was born in Leutershausen, a small village of fewer than 2000 people near Ansbach, Germany on 27 December 1920. Her father was a cattle dealer. There were only a few Jewish families in that community.…

Johanna Spector Archives at JTS Receives Grant

January 30, 2013?The Library of The Jewish Theological Seminary
(JTS) has received a $175,300 Cataloging Hidden Special Collections
and Archives grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, through a
program administered by the Council on Library Resources (CLIR). The
grant will make the archives of Dr. Johanna Spector, a major
repository of rare materials related to the dwindling Jewish
communities of Africa, the Middle East, and Asia available for
research and to the public for the first time. The collection will
now be cataloged for use, and rehoused in order to prevent
deterioration of its materials.

Kay Shelemay wins Jaap Kunst Prize

An article written by Dr. Kay Kaufman Shelemay won the Jaap Kunst Prize of the Society for
Ethnomusicology, which is given to: “The most significant article published by a member of the Society for
Ethnomusicology in the previous year.” The title of this article is “The Power of Silent Voices: Women in the Syrian Jewish Musical Tradition.” It is published in a volume in the SOAS
Musicology Series, edited by Laudan Nooshin, titled Music and the Play of
Power in the Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia, 2009.

Dr. Shelemay is the G. Gordon Watts Professor of Music, a Professor of African and African American Studies and Ethnomusicology at Harvard University . She is a member of the Editorial Board of Musica Judaica and was the inaugural speaker for the first session of the Jewish Music Forum in 2004.…

In 1986, Robert Fleisher spent two months at the center for visiting artists and scholars known as Mishkenot Sha’ananim opposite the wall of Jerusalem’s old city. There he interviewed twenty-four Israeli composers, and in the present volume he brings us oral histories of twenty of these, based on the interviews. The topics covered include the composers’ reflections on their own individual creative output, the place of their music within Israeli music culture, and life in Israel and how it affects their work. KOL B’SEDER 30TH ANNIVERSARY CONCERT

On Sunday May 23 at 7:00 p.m. Temple Sinai of Sharon, MA is “KOL B’SEDER and FRIENDS”, an evening of
unforgettable music featuring the duo “Shirav” (Rabbis David Paskin and
Menachem Creditor), Rabbi David Wolfman, Cantor Judith Seplowin, “The
Freilech Band” (oy, can they rock!) from Temple Isaiah of Lexington,
MA, with special guest Doug Cotler. Sharon is 10 minutes from I-95,
just a half hour south of Boston, and an easy drive from much of New

Israeli Cellist At Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall

Israeli cellist Benjamin Shapira returns to NY to celebrate his new CD “Romantic Music for Cello”. He will be performing an all-romantic program at Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall on April 30th, 8:30 pm.

Shapira’s international career was launched after his celebrated Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall performance of the Complete Bach Suites for Cello Solo. This CD features selections from Mendelssohn, Schumann, Saint-Saens and and Dvorak. He performs with his mother, pianist Shulamith Shapira, a graduate of the State Conservatory of Music in Bucharest under the supervision of legendary teacher Florica Musicescu. Yuval Ron Ensemble at Brandeis University

Saturday, October 22, 2005 at 8pm the Yuval Ron Ensemble comes to Brandeis University’s Slosberg Music Center. An intercultural collaboration that unites the sacred traditons of Judaism, Sufism, and Christianity in a musical feast. The souful ensemble whose mission is to build peaceful music making come from Israel, Lebanon, Armenia, France and the US. The enesemble features an authentic Sufi Dervish–a master Whirler of the Mevlana Sufi Order. Pre-concert lecture at 7pm by Dr. Kay Kaufman Shelemay, G. Beyond The Pale to Perform Mozart on CBC

Beyond the Pale, a folk, roots, and klezmer group from Toronto, will try something a little different… They will play MOZART for CBC Radio on, Jan 26 & 27. They’ll be performing in a unique musical event on January 26 at Glenn Gould Studio as part of CBC Radio Two’s “Mozart 250” celebrations. The show A New World of Mozart will feature “an evening of creative musical homage to Mozart” featuring Beyond the Pale, the Dunhuang Chamber Ensemble (traditional Chinese), The Creaking Tree String Quartet (modern bluegrass), and Autorickshaw (South Asian jazz fusion). The show will be recorded and broadcast on CBC Radio Two’s “In Performance, The World,”the following evening January 27 (actually Mozart’s 250th birthday). CBC Radio Two is 94.1 FM in Toronto.

Emil Skobeloff, serving as a cantor of Congreation Ohev Shalom in Wallingford, PA sends a CD dedicated to his son Jonah. It’s a private publication produced with the help of studio musician Pete Huttlinger, who has played on Grammy nominated projects and is a veteran Nashville session player. It shows. Shapira and Shapira Perform Brahms at Carnegie Weill Recital Hall

Winning Composers Spanning the Globe Featured At Shalshelet s Second International Music Festival

CHEVY CHASE, MARYLAND — Shalshelet: The Foundation for New Jewish Liturgical
Music, announced the names of the 28 composers whose 36 compositions will be
presented during the Second International Festival of New Jewish Liturgical Music on
Sunday, June 11 at Ohr Kodesh Congregation in Chevy Chase, Maryland (8300
Meadowbrook Lane). The 7 p.m. concert will feature 15 of these liturgical works, and
the day-long Festival, beginning at 10 a.m., will showcase the remainder of the
compositions.

The work, with music by Elizabeth Swados, writer/director, Cecilia Rubino, the poet, Paula Finn, and designed by Bonnie Roche-Bronfman, commemorates the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire of 1911. The fire was a completely devastating tragedy that resulted in the loss of life of over 146 working Jewish and Italian girls. Trapped behind locked doors, the tragedy led to workplace reforms and galvanized the Progressive Movement. To read more about this event see:

Odessan freylekhs, Yemeni devotionals and Macedonian wedding tunes explode effortlessly into drum and bass driven tracks. Hip young Londoners, Oi-Va-Voi are the subject of a recent international documentary film showcasing the best of contemporary British culture. The Melbourne Jewish Male Voice Choir

The Melbourne (Australia) Jewish Male Voice Choir has been in existence for over a year, has performed with the Johannesburg Jewish Male Choir at the Melbourne Concert Hall in June ’99, and had it’s own concert in December ’99 at St. Kilda Synagogue. The Choir’s conductor is Brett Kaye, a young South African who moved to Australia. The Choir’s resident soloist is Rabbi Heilbrunn. Jack Sweetman is Secretary and may be contacted by email.
