The Jewish Museum will present The Jewish Romantics, a concert
celebrating the 200th anniversary of Felix Mendelssohn’s birth, at 1109 Fifth Avenue
at 92nd Street on Thursday, November 5 at 7 pm. This performance features a roster
of gifted young artists from Mannes College, which continues its yearlong music
festival, “The Mendelssohn Salon.” Felix Mendelssohn and his musically talented
sister, Fanny, were hosts and guests at cultural gatherings known as salons, which
included the great composers of their day. This concert explores the music of the
Mendelssohns and of other important Jewish composers of the 19th century Romantic
period.

The November 5 program is a co-production of Mannes College, The New
School for Music, and The Jewish Museum.…

Symphony No. 4 Homage in memory of the Holocaust

The 24th. of January 2008, at 9, PM , there will be a premiere
performance of Alfono Rega,’s Symphony n°4 in 6 movements written
as a homage in memory of the Holocaust. This event will take place at the Conservatory of Milan contemporaneously with the inauguration of the Holocaust Museum situated in the railway station. of Milan, Italy.

The concert is free. It will be on behalf of the Associazione Luciano Elmo
Onlus in memory of Luciano Elmo, who was a Lawyer, sent in
concentration camp and the only survivor of his group.
He is recalled for having save a great number of Jews, and received military decorations several times.

Along with the documentary made by Roberta Grossman and Marta Kaufman that aired on PBS in 2010, there have been a few historical collections putting up materials about Hava Nagila, the ubiquitous folk tune that has become part and parcel of the American Jewish experience. Varshavsky-Shapiro Piano Duo win Second Place in Miami

Israelis Stanislava Varshavsky and Diana Shapiro won Second place in Dec, 2005, at the 10th Dranoff International Two Piano Competition, held in Miami, Florida. Competing against the top piano duos in the world, the Israelis finished second with the pianists from Japan, Kuni Seo and Shin-ichiro Kato finishing first place Gold Medal. The Murray Dranoff Foundation was created in 1987 by Loretta Dranoff as a tribute to her late husband with whom she performed as an internationally recognized two piano team. The second prize, the Silver Medal comes with a $15,000 award. Another Israeli, Michael Tsalka from Tel Aviv finished 9th place with partner Katarzyna Marzec-Salwinski from Krakow, Poland.

Varshavski and Shapiro started playing together as a duo in 1998. In 2004 they won The Grand Prize at the 15th Piano Competition in Rome for duo piano and 1st prize for piano four hands.…

American. Vielle player. Born in 1961, and grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. Degree in music from UC Berkeley. Studied vielle with Margriet Tindemans. Member for many years of Ensemble Alcatraz, Project Ars Nova, and Medieval Strings, and has also worked with Sequentia, Hesperion XX, the Boston Camerata, and the King s Noyse. She has performed and taught in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Israel, Morocco and Japan. Shira happily collaborated with singer/storyteller John Fleagle for fifteen years, and performs now with several new groups, including the medieval ensemble Fortune s Wheel, the new music group Ephemeros, the world music cover band Panacea, and also Trouz Bras, a band devoted to the dance music of Celtic Brittany. She is also the founder of Class V Music, an ensemble dedicated to performance on river rafting trips, and has performed and taught on the Colorado and Rogue rivers.…

Born on the island of Key West in the Florida Keys, Eva Wasserman-Margolis began to study clarinet at the age of 13. After finishing her Master Degree in Music Performance (1980) at the University of Illinois, she secured, at the age of 23, the position of principal clarinet with the Haifa Symphony Orchestra in Israel. While in Israel, she studied musicology at Bar Ilan University. She has focused on introducing audiences to performances and recordings of music of lesser-known composers in ensembles and solo works. She has recorded for composer Sara Feigin and finished a recording project of rare music for two clarinets and piano with Luigi Magistrelli. She has also been dedicated to raising a new generation of young clarinet players. They now study and perform all over the world.…

RecKlez for Lag Ba’Omer in Cambridge

RecKlez, the Harvard Klezmer Band, will be performing THIS Sunday, May 9 (Lag b’Omer) at Harvard Hillel (52 Mt. Auburn St in Cambridge, Massachusetts.)
The afternoon of Jewish music featuring Harvard’s Jewish a cappella group, Mizmor Shir, and RecKlez: Harvard Klezmer Band, begins at 4:00 PM. Come listen to a rich variety of modern and traditional melodies and stay for dancing. The Klezmer part of the concert will probably begin at 4:45.

Zamir’s Seventh Annual Open Sing

Sunday, December 2, 4:00-6:00 pm, Congregation Mishkan Tefila in Chestnut Hill, MA. Zamir’s Seventh Annual Open Sing. Again this year, the Open Sing will be held in conjunction with LimmudBoston, an annual celebration of Jewish learning. Singers from throughout the Greater Boston area are invited to join Zamir in singing excerpts from Handel’s Judas Maccabaeus and choral songs from Israel.

The Amernet String Quartet will perform “Music of the Jewish Diaspora” including four of Joseph Achron’s string quartets: “Scher”, “Mi Chomocho”, “Lullaby”, and “Stimmung”. These works were never published until recently — the Amernet will use advance copies of the Achron Society’s forthcoming edition of Achron’s music. The program will also include works of Shostakovich, Zhitomirski, Weinberg, Grunfeld and Haas.

Members of the String Quartet include:
Misha Viteson, violin; Marcia Littley, violin; Michael Klotz, viola and Jason Calloway, cello.

Menachem Wiesenberg at Hebrew College in Newton, MA

The School of Jewish Music at Hebrew College is pleased to present a Master Class led by Menachem Wiesenberg, one of Israel’s most acclaimed musicians. Composer, musician, pianist, and music educator, Mr. Wiesenberg will be on campus Wednesday, October 3 from 1:30-2:45pm to lead a master class featuring his vocal compositions as performed by students of the School of Jewish Music. This event is free and open to the public.
