Amid the Jasmine CD Release

The Gerald Edery Ensemble‘s
newest recording, Amid the Jasmine is finished and will be available on the website,
www.sefaradrecords.com, on February 9th, 2006.

The Ensemble will be in the New York/New Jersey area, on Saturday, February
11, 2006. There will be a CD release concert at the Jewish Community Center of
Greater Monmouth County in Deal Park, New Jersey. The event will feature The Gerard
Edery Ensemble performing music from the new release as well as appearances by guest
Cantors. You can expect an evening filled with a multi-cultural spirit conveyed
through an eclectic mix of songs in Ladino, Spanish, Arabic and Hebrew from the
Sephardic and Middle Eastern traditions, as well as original songs by Gerard Edery.

David Berkeley at Club Passim on Feb. 1

David Berkeley will appear at Club Passim in Cambridge, MA on Feb. 1 at 8pm, Joe’s Pub in New York on Feb. 2 and The Tin Angel in Philadelphia on the 3rd.
Berkeley is an American singer-songwriter, with a voice compared by The New York Times as “lustrous, melancholy voice with shades of Tim Buckley and Nick Drake.” He’s is a Harvard University graduate about whom Hillary Meister wrote in the Atlanta Jewish Times on January 2, 2004, is influenced by synagogue services, and that in particular,” a cantor with a beautiful voice “kept me going to synagogue” while growing up in New Jersey” He has several CDs, including Live from the Fez (2005), After the Wrecking Ships (2004), The Confluence (2002). The Confluence, was reviewed in
Billboard magazine and Rollingstone which called him
a “Sixties-esque troubadour with songs to swoon by and a voice sweeter than
incense and peppermints.” Berkeley reported to Meister a couple of years ago that the music coming out of silent prayer was always the most powerful for him.…

Yale Strom — In Memory Of

Dec. 16th at 7pm the world premiere of
YALE STROM’S quartet
“IN THE MEMORY OF…”

In the summer of 2008, musician Yale Strom traveled to Romania and discovered a musical treasure trove. In the upstairs women’s balcony of the 1871 synagogue of Carei he found a box of old books including the cantor’s music book with over 250 melodies notated by hand. THIS ROMANIAN JEWISH MUSICAL TREASURE HAD BEEN LOST UNTIL STROM’S DISCOVERY. In Memory of is a performance based upon the cantorial music he uncovered, and is dedicated to the Jews who perished during the Holocaust. Virtuoso cellist Mike Block and his string quartet will perform the new compositon.

After the quartet Cantor Ari Priven (Cong. Bnai Jeshurun) will sing some of the melodies from the “lost” cantor’s book and then Yale Strom and Mike Block will perform melodies from the same work as klezmer pieces.…

whenyouliedownCantor Judy Greenfeld has released a new CD “When You Lie Down and When You Rise Up” which is a collection modern day renewal-style melodies to prayers for the beginning and end of the day. Each song is based primarily upon traditional texts which are set to new music. Cantor Greenfeld, Gordon Lustig, Meir Finkelstein and Sheryl Braunstein are the featured composers on the album. The album has spoken text of prayer as well as traditional texts helping listeners to have guided focus on the meanings of the prayers. Cantor Greenfeld has a wonderful, clear voice which is especially suited to the new age, quiet, relaxing music prevalent on the album. This is not an album geared toward children, although it is appropriate for them with a warm and friendly sound.…

Musica Sacra will explore Jewish choral
repertoire that juxtaposes the sacred and secular, the ancient and

Sacra by Osnat Netzer, Israeli composer and pianist. The concert also

CHOIRS AND CANTORS BRING ON THE LIGHT THIS CHANUKAH

Over 200 adults and children will celebrate Chanukah,
the Festival of Lights, in concert, 3 P.M., Sunday, December 14, 2008 as
Congregation Rodeph Sholom of Manhattan hosts its unique, multigenerational Festival
of Choirs. The ninth annual concert will feature cantors and their volunteer adult
and children’s choirs from all over the New York metropolitan area. This year, the
first night of Chanukah is Sunday, December 21, 2008.

“There is nothing as special as seeing the young and the young-at-heart join
together in song to celebrate the festival of Chanukah,” according to Congregation
Rodeph Sholom’s Senior Cantor, Rebecca Garfein. “We are thrilled to present the
ninth annual Festival of Choirs to the New York community.”

Highlights of the concert will include the multigenerational 200-voiced combined
choir singing an arrangement of Peter Yarrow’s song (of Peter Paul and Mary
fame),“Light One Candle,” and the concert’s finale, “Bring on the Light,” a piece
by composer, singer and actor, Danny Maseng, that was commissioned by Congregation
Rodeph Sholom for the Festival of Choirs in 2001.…

Yaffa Yarkoni: A Voice for Peace; Gave Voice to Israeli Pride; Supported National Morale for Half Century

Yaffa Yarkoni, (December 24,1925-Jan 1, 2012). Born in Giv’ atayim, Israel. Yarkoni, as many of her generation, was the child of immigrants from the Caucuses. She was the daughter of Malka Alhassof and Avraham Abramov, the middle daughter of three children. Each parent had migrated early in the 20th century. Avraham Abramov, a fabric and carpet dealer, met Malka in Tel Aviv and married her there. Later, he left his family and moved to South Africa. Meanwhile, Malka was left to raise the children. She owned Tslil coffee house in Givatayim (Givat Rambam). All three young children (including Yaffa’s siblings Binyamin, Tikva) proved to have musical talent in singing, dancing and playing musical instruments. They started off in a teenage group Basmati. Yaffa attended Gertrude Kraus Dance School and from there succeeded in landing a place with the dance troupe of the Palestine Opera Company.…

The Leo Kraft 90th Birthday Concert at the Center for Jewish History

On Sunday, March 11th at 3 PM the Society will present The Leo Kraft 90th
Birthday Concert at the Center for Jewish History. This performance will
feature some of New York’s finest chamber music players, including flutist
Patricia Spencer, clarinetists Charles Neidich and Ayako Oshima, violinist
Renne Jolles, violist Mark Halloway, and cellist Marcy Rosen, as well pianist
Morey Ritt, who will premiere Testimonium, a new work Kraft has written
for her.

Among other works on the program are New Songs from Old, a fantasy for
solo clarinet based on traditional Jewish motifs and Seven Hebrew Songs to
poems by medieval Hebrew poets, sung by the American baritone Thomas

Melodia’s spring concert Awakening the Spirit will feature the U.S. Premiere of John Rutter’s new work “Visions,” a powerful work that examines the spiritual, religious, and historic importance of Jerusalem as a symbol of “a utopian ideal of heavenly peace and seraphic bliss for redeemed humanity” in four movements.

Baritone, pianist and conductor, an accomplished pianist, accompanist and coach, and was a faculty member of the Rubin Academy of Music in Jerusalem and the Tel Aviv University. A recent press release revealed: “Dan began his piano studies at the age of six. He graduated from Thelma Yellin High School, and served in the IDF’s special program for excellent musicians. In 1993, he won first prize in the Francois Shapira Competition as a baritone singer (1993) and performed with the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra. Opera Star and philanthropist, Chairperson of Lincoln Center, and for many years, director of New York City Opera. Debut with the San Francisco Opera in 1953 and New York City opera in 1955. Joined the board of the Metropolitan Opera in 1991 where she had debuted in 1975. Beverly Sills, affectionately known to millions of fans as “Bubbles”, is a classical high coloratura soprano with an incredible range, flexibility and poise. She sang a repertoire of over 70 operas. She is the recipient of the French Order of Arts and Letters, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the New York City Handel Medallion, and a Kennedy Center Honor among her many achievements and honors. Her Shapirit, Yefehfiah (Beautiful Dragonfly) was performed in January, 2005 by the New York Treble Singers in New York. Currently, Judith Shatin is William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of Music and Director of the Virginia Center for Computer Music of the McIntire Department of Music at the University of Virginia. She founded the VCCM in 1988. Prof. Shatin received a AB from Douglass College, 1971, a MM from Julliard in 1974 and the MFA 1976 and PhD from Princeton in 1979. She started teaching at the University of Virginia in 1979 and has been there since. Born, January 1, 1885, in Pinsk, Russia. Died, May 18, 1960 in New York. Yiddish folk singer, composer, author. Her father was a Yiddish playwright and novelist. She started singing as a very young child with extraordinary accuracy. The family moved to New York and she studied voice with Lazar Samioloff, Fracis Rogers and others. Premiered her opera “Once Upon a Time” in 1922 at the New York Yiddish Art Theatre. Member of Yuval Trio. Sang primarily in the Jewish community Jewish music. Held leadership positions in Mailamm, the American-Palestine Music Association, along with her sister, Miriam Shomer. Studied Jewish music in trip to Eretz Yisrael in 1927. Wrote, Songs Heard in Palestine, based on her study there. Her papers are held by YIVO in New York, which include newspaper clippings from 1916 through 1950.…

Following a success with Irving Berlin, she continued Yiddish style comedic songs. Brice toured as a vaudevillian, and also was featured in several Broadway shows in the 1930s. She became known for her onstage antics and Yiddish ethnic humor. She went on to radio and created the Baby Snooks character.

Yiddish operetta “Di Goldene Kale (The Golden Bride)” at Rutgers August 5

August 5 2015 at 7pm at Rutgers University in New Jersey will be the first orchestrated performance in 70 years of the Operetta “di Goldene Kale” The Golden Bride with music by Joseph Rumshinsky. This performance will showcase the reconstruction of the operetta by Michael Ochs, a scholar and librarian who worked at Harvard and found the manuscript there 35 years ago. Di Goldene Kale became a smash hit for Rumshinsky who wrote beautiful romantic melodies. Zalman Mlotek of the Folksbiene National Yiddish Theater in NYC will conduct. Writing a popular book about a popular song should merit some attention, so it’s not surprising that no less than four items appeared in The New York Times about this book. It’s supposed to be a book about one song. But, of course, it isn’t really. It’s a book about acculturation, assimilation and cultural impact. For readers of the Jewish Music WebCenter, these issues raised by White Christmas, may ultimately deal out the moral: we have only ourselves to “blame” –or– “congratulate” –as the view may be.

Irving Berlin, born as Izzy Baline, was of the generation of Jewish immigrants who wanted nothing more than to be thoroughly assimilated and thoroughly American. Berlin was one of the most successful examples of this, both in his personal and professional life.…

Yiddish singing star Anthony Russell in Miami

Anthony Russell will perform in Miami on Sunday, June 9th at 4:00 p.m. in the first
solo concert presented by the Winter Jewish Music Concert.

Anthony Mordechai Tzvi Russell was profiled this week in the Times of Israel. “If
you think you know what a Yiddish singing star looks like, think again. The new, hot
name in the world of Yiddish musical performance is Anthony Russell, and he’s a
33-year-old, 6’1’’ African-American hipster from Oakland, California,” the author
wrote. “Baptist-born and Jew by choice, opera singer Anthony Mordechai Tzvi

Portrait of Fanny Mendelssohn at The Jewish Museum

A recent acquisition to The Jewish Museum, Portrait of Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, 1842, by
19th century German artist Moritz Daniel Oppenheim, has been added to
the “Modernity” section of Culture and Continuity. The subject of this
portrait was the sister of famous composer Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy,
a talented composer and musician in her own right. Fanny Hensel was
the wife of a fellow painter, Wilhelm Hensel, whom Oppenheim met in Rome
with the Nazarenes.

Bernstein: A Jewish Legacy

The Center for Jewish History, the American Society for Jewish Music
and the American Jewish Historical Society present:

Bernstein: A Jewish Legacy
An encore performance of the recently sold-out program at The Jewish Museum and
part of the city-wide festival Bernstein: The Best of all Possible Worlds.
The concert of mostly unknown Bernstein works on Jewish themes, narrated by Jack
Gottlieb, Bernstein’s longtime editor, sheds new light on some of the composer’s
more celebrated pieces. A number cut from West Side Story, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim,
combined with another piece from an abandoned project with lyrics by Betty Comden
and Adolph Green, reveals a surprising transformation as a choral setting in Hebrew.
Among the other works are world premieres of “A Choral Quilt” (arranged by Gottlieb)
and a song Bernstein wrote in reaction to anti-Semitism.…

Manhattan’s Congregation Rodeph Sholom and The Riverside Church are proud to
jointly present Celebrating Life!, a concert to raise funds for the Project People
Foundation (PPF) and the women and children of South Africa’s townships.

PPF is a New York-based non-profit organization founded in 1995 that builds bridges
between caring communities in the United States and women and students in South
Africa. PPF is helping South Africans as they strive for economic independence and
access to education despite the challenges of apartheid’s legacy, AIDS and poverty.

The concert will be held on October 29, 2009 at Congregation Rodeph Sholom, 7 West

Neshoma Orchestra

A sohisticated website introduces the Neshoma Orchestra of Cedarhurst, New York. Celebrating 20 years as a band performing “at weddings, dinners, Bar /Bat Mitzvahs, and organizational/corporate events worldwide,” the orchestra is an exemplar of the American Yeshivish and Modern Orthodox style of music. The group boasts a large number of instrumentalists and vocalists, although there are no individual bios on the website. Neshoma Orchestra has records with many top concert artists in the Jewish field. Michael Sojcher and Elly Zomick are the leaders of the group. Neshoma website audio clips include a choice of mp3 or Real Audio. The current website features their CD “A Heimishe Simcha,” with a mention about the upcoming album called “Neshoma @your Simcha”. YIVO. Archives and Library Music Collection

YIVO holds one of the world’s largest collections of Eastern European Jewish sound recordings and Jewish sheet music. Materials must be consulted onsite. Researchers are requested to call for an appointment for access to the Archives. “This collection consists of published and unpublished works of Yiddish and Hebrew; art, folk, popular, and theater music; Holocaust songs; liturgical and Hasidic music; choral music; and instrumental compositions. It includes several thousand pieces of published sheet music by composers and arrangers such as Abraham Ellstein, Abraham Goldfaden, Pinchas Jassinowski, Alexander Olshanetzky, Joseph Rumshinsky, and Sholem Secunda. Yiddish Song Workshop at Felicja Blumental Music Centre Tel Aviv

The Yiddish Song Workshop‚ under the direction of Nekhama Lifshitz‚ is now admitting new singers. For details please contact Regina (0547621628) or Udi (0542026242). The workshop was founded 12 years ago by Nekhama Lifshitz‚ queen of Yiddish song. The aims of the workshop are to preserve Eastern European culture in general and Yiddish language and song in particular. Weekly workshop lessons are conducted privately by pianist and coach Regina Dricker‚ Nekhama’s right hand for many years. The lessons include voice training and study of Yiddish language and culture through the songs. Every year the workshop presents a number of song evenings or shows based upon different themes. Some of the performances‚ such as the evening dedicated to the Holocaust‚ are held throughout the country. This past year‚ which was dedicated to Yiddish poet Itsik Manger‚ we put on performances of ”The Megilah” [The Purimspiel] as well as a concert of Manger’s poetry and songs.…

THE SONS OF SEPHARAD CONCERT

One of the most amazing performing groups in Jewish music will be at Temple Emanuel on January 30 for a fund raising concert in support of the Cantors Assembly. The concert is being jointly presented by Temple Emanuel and the New England Region of the Cantors Assembly.

The Sons of Sepharad features leading musicians who started their lives in countries surrounding the Mediterranean, including Turkey, Morocco, Greece, France and Israel. The group was founded by Gerard Edery, who has published a book of Sephardic songs, and recorded 10 CDs of Sephardic music. He is joined by two prominent members of the Cantors Assembly, Alberto Mizrahi and Aaron Bensoussan, who serve congregations in Chicago and Toronto, respectively. The instrumentalists are Rex Benincasa (percussion) who has a career spanning professional orchestral appearances and performing in Broadway pit bands; George Mgrdichian, the leading performer on oud in the US; and Emmanuel Mann (bass) founder of several Israeli performing groups.…

Cantor Nathan Lam

Born in Los Angeles. Studied cantorial music under Allan Michelson. By age 16, he started leading services for High Holy Days. Cantor Lam holds an Honora Causa from the Jewish Theological Seminary. As the cantor at Midway Jewish Center in New York City, he began commissioning new musical works. In 1976, Cantor Lam assumed his post at Stephen S. Wise Temple. Cantor Nathan Lam has led Stephen S. Wise Temple for over 25 years, and heads the Academy for Jewish Religion s cantorial school. Brad Sherman honored Cantor Lam as having “performed in concerts across the world, appeared on television both nationally and internationally, performed opera and sung his vast Jewish repertoire in a multitude of public appearances. He has released a number of recordings, including `Legacy,’ which represents a landmark collaboration between the talents of the National Symphony of Israel and the kind of Jewish musical innovation exemplified by Cantor Lam, and other well known composers.…
