16, SLAVIC SOUL PARTY! performs virtuosic new brass band music

Kontraband offer a mix of Eastern-European melodies, Latin rhythms and

performance
Participants and observers will learn about the historical background and
cultural context of this Jewish music and the associated dances. They will
then have the opportunity to gain hands-on (or feet-on!) experience,
choosing either to study the music (style, ornamentation, accompaniment) in
more depth, or to learn some of the dances with experienced dance leader and
drummer Guy Schalom, with live music from members of the band. No previous
knowledge of klezmer music or dance required. Instrumentalists should be
grade 4 equivalent or above.

NEW YORK, NY – The Jewish Museum’s popular SummerNights program returns,
presenting live world music in a concert setting on four Thursdays in
July. Each concert begins at 7:30 pm. Margot Leverett and the Klezmer
Mountain Boys, performing their unique mix of bluegrass and klezmer,
kick off SummerNights on July 2. This cosmopolitan concert series
features critically acclaimed musicians offering innovative
interpretations of music from all over the world. Other scheduled
performers include Musette Explosion with accordionist Will Holshouser
and guitarist Matt Munisteri echoing on French jazz of the 1930s and 40s
with fiery improvisations; the virtuosic brass band music of SLAVIC SOUL

The Amsterdam Jewish Music Projects Foundation will be taking part in
the Russian Centennial Celebration for Dmitri Shostakovich with the
programme “Zun mit a regn” (Sun and Rain) that is to be performed at the
Shostakovich Conferences in St. Petersburg on 12 and 13 October. The
programme, which premiered in the Netherlands, includes chamber music and
songs composed by Shostakovich himself and by his friends Mieczyslaw
Weinberg and Veniamin Basner. The central source of inspiration for the
works on the programme is the music of the Jewish people, oppressed in
Russia during the Stalin regime. The works will be performed by singer
Sovali (soprano), violinist Grigory Sedukh, cellist Alexander Oratovski and
pianist Paul Prenen. The performances are supported by the Wilhelmina E.
Jansen Fund.

As the cantor at Midway Jewish Center in New York City, he began commissioning new musical works. In 1976, Cantor Lam assumed his post at Stephen S. Wise Temple. Cantor Nathan Lam has led Stephen S. On Sunday, June 1 at 3 PM, at the Center for Jewish History (15 West 16th
Street, NYC), the American Society for Jewish Music, in association with the
American Jewish Historical Society and the Mannes College of Music of the New
School, presents “Music in Our Time 2008,” our annual concert of contemporary
music.
As those of you who have attended the Society’s previous concerts of
contemporary music know, not only are these concerts an important part of the
Society’s mission, but they are filled with vital, committed performances of Jewish
music by wonderful artists.
The program for “Music in Our Time 2008” consists of works by Paul Richards,

Born 14 July 1904, in Vilna, Lithuania, Nadia Reisenberg moved with her family to St. Petersburg in 1915 where she studied piano at the Conservatory under Leonid Nikolaiev. After the Russian revolution, the family moved, going from Vilna, where Nadia played in the Gelios Theatre accompanying movies, to Poland where she concertized with the Warsaw Philharmonic, to Germany. The Reisenberg s came to America in 1922. Under the helpful largesse of Isaac Sherman, Nadia gave private recitals and began to build a reputation.
With less than one year of study with Alexander Lambert in New York, she gave her American debut on 17 December 1922, playing the Polish Fantasy by Ignace Paderewski, with the composer at the performance in the Century Theatre. Amnon Shiloah, one of the world’s foremost authorities on Jewish music passed away in Jerusalem on Jul 11 2014 at the age of 85.
A long-time professor of musicology at Hebrew
University, Amnon Shiloah was an internationally respected and widely published
authority on Arabic and Middle Eastern Jewish musical traditions, a
scholar who did both ethnomusicological fieldwork and traditional

Vilnius, Lithuania (September 23, 2014) – The YIVO Institute for Jewish Research is pleased to announce the launch of The Vilna Project, a seven-year international project to preserve, digitize and virtually reunite YIVO’s prewar archives located in New York City and Vilnius, Lithuania, through a dedicated web portal. The Project will also digitally reconstruct the historic Strashun Library of Vilna, one of the great prewar libraries in Europe. Project partners are The YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, The Central State Archives of Lithuania and the National Library of Lithuania.

Launching of National Cantorial Scholarship Initiative
On Thursday, November 12, 2009, legendary American Jewish composer,
singer, and recording artist, Debbie Friedman, will be the featured
performer at a concert to benefit Hebrew Union College – Jewish
Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR) and its School of Sacred Music (SSM).

350 singers from cities across America and Israel. Maestro Matthew Lazar is
founder and director. HaZamir draws together a network of 21 American
chapters, 5 Israeli chapters and 60 alumni. Each chapter trains its singers
throughout the year in a sophisticated repertoire of classical and
contemporary Jewish choral music.
PROGRAM FEATURES
Music from 3 continents (US, Europe and Asia) spanning 3 centuries and 3
languages, English, Hebrew and Yiddish. The program displays the high
caliber and variety of Jewish music available in the 21st century and also
demonstrates the commitment and discipline of the singers, who master a

A rare London performance by international vocalist / composer Ayelet Rose Gottlieb, as she passes through, en-rout to New York, where she will perform at the Metropolitan Museum with composer John Zorn’s Mycale quartet.

Jewish Music and Poetry in
Renaissance Italy
The Ensemble Lucidarium, a famous international group of
scholar musicians specialized in the works of the Middle Ages and the
Renaissance, will perform: “La Istoria de Purim,” Jewish music and
poetry from the Italian Renaissance, which was awarded first prize in 2004
by the European Association for Jewish Culture. In the fifteenth and
sixteenth centuries, northern Italy was a meeting place for three
separate Jewish communities: Ashkenazi, Jews coming from
northeastern Europe, Sephardic Jews from the Iberian peninsula, and
Italikim who had been in Italy since the days of the Roman Empire. The
music from this period is characterized by a fertile exchange of
ideas and culture between Jews and gentiles.…

Every Sunday Morning, combining live music and food in a fresh, cultural environment, City Winery’s Klezmer brunch series pairs some of the greatest musicians in the world with delicious lox, bagels and other tasty fare on our brunch menu on Sunday mornings from 10am to 2pm. **Please note that the live music is played from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a short break in the middle.
Tickets are just $10 to cover for live music and does not include food or drink. Children 13 and under are free for the music. We have a full brunch menu available upon request.
