Jewish Music Festival to be at Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam

From May 9-12, 2008, Amsterdam’s new
concert hall, Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ, will host the premiere of the
International Jewish Music Festival in its new format. The main event
of the festival will be a 3-day Competition for Jewish music ensembles.

For the first time ever, a jury of international Jewish music experts
will judge a competition for musicians and ensembles with a goal of
an international career focusing on Jewish music. This includes folk,
pop, klezmer, classical, and liturgical music, and music by Jewish
composers with clearly discernible Jewish elements.

Contestants are welcome from all countries and do not need to be
Jewish, but must be 16 years or older. Registration forms & more

“Duo Brikcius – 2 Cellos Tour” concert of two Czech cellists (and siblings) Anna
Brikciusova and Frantisek Brikcius. Concert will be on Monday 13th December 2010,

In addition to Fantasie IV (2008) by the Czech composer and organist Irena Kosikova,

Karl Goldmark was a key figure of the musical culture of the Austro-Hungarian
Monarchy. He was born in a Hungarian city as a son of a Jewish chazzan, but his
activity concentrated mostly to Vienna. He considered himself Hungarian, but all of
his operas were composed in German and, except Gatz von Berlichingen, premiered in
Vienna. Thus, his life and oeuvre represents not only the problematic questions of
citizenship, religion and national identity in Central Europe at the turn of the
century, but also their impact on a variety of musical genres (operas, symphonic
works, chamber music, choral music, works for piano and songs).…

“LAMA LO!” ensemble was established in 1999 with the support of the Ministry of Absorption in Jerusalem. “LAMA LO!”(“WHY NOT!”) presents a new view of traditional Jewish folklore by blending traditional klezmer music with elements of classical, jazz and Middle Eastern ethnic music, thus forming the bright individual and creative manner of the group. It consists of 6 professional musicians: Roman Kekhman virtuoso clarnetist (soloist), Yevgeniy Lyublin (Trumpet), Yuri Povolotsky (Piano, Accordion), Yakov Entin(Violin , Bass), Eduard Rezonov(Contrabass) and Anatoly Magdalinsky (Drums). Lama Lo! participated in arrangements, organized by Knesset, the President’s House, and other governmental institutions, and took part in the opening of international klezmer festival in S’fat. Yiddish operetta “Di Goldene Kale (The Golden Bride)” at Rutgers August 5

August 5 2015 at 7pm at Rutgers University in New Jersey will be the first orchestrated performance in 70 years of the Operetta “di Goldene Kale” The Golden Bride with music by Joseph Rumshinsky. This performance will showcase the reconstruction of the operetta by Michael Ochs, a scholar and librarian who worked at Harvard and found the manuscript there 35 years ago. Di Goldene Kale became a smash hit for Rumshinsky who wrote beautiful romantic melodies. Zalman Mlotek of the Folksbiene National Yiddish Theater in NYC will conduct. JTS will host a performance of excerpts and discussion of two important new operas: As One (music by Laura Kaminsky, libretto by Mark Campbell and Kimberly Reed), following a transgender woman’s journey to self-acceptance. The other is Steal a Pencil for Me (music by H. L. Miller Cantorial School Assistant Professor Gerald Cohen, libretto by Deborah Brevoort), the story of a real-life couple who fell in love while imprisoned in Nazi concentration camps. Following the performance, the two composers, Laura Kaminsky and Gerald Cohen, will discuss their operas’ creation. Cantor Nancy Abramson, director of H. L. Miller Cantorial School, will moderate the discussion.

Writing a popular book about a popular song should merit some attention, so it’s not surprising that no less than four items appeared in The New York Times about this book. It’s supposed to be a book about one song. But, of course, it isn’t really. It’s a book about acculturation, assimilation and cultural impact. For readers of the Jewish Music WebCenter, these issues raised by White Christmas, may ultimately deal out the moral: we have only ourselves to “blame” –or– “congratulate” –as the view may be.

Irving Berlin, born as Izzy Baline, was of the generation of Jewish immigrants who wanted nothing more than to be thoroughly assimilated and thoroughly American. Berlin was one of the most successful examples of this, both in his personal and professional life.…

American. Born: 1916. Died: 1981. Liturgical singer. Known as “Shaindele Di Chazanit”, due to her singing cantorial music. Her father was a chazan in Philadelphia. She sang liturgical music on the radio, at WPEN. She is often called the first woman chazan, but she never served in that capacity. Her papers are held in the Philadelphia Jewish Archive Center

American. Yiddish singer and music teacher. Born, Brooklyn, NY. Fran studied at Hebrew School of the Hebrew Educational Society, and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School. She received a BA degree in Education and Psychology from Brooklyn College in June 1947, and a Masters in Social Work from Boston University in May l953. She married Robert Kleiner in 1948. Fran started teaching Yiddish songs in camp settings. In the early 1950s, she worked for a time at Camp Kingswood, but moved to the Philadelphia area in 1953. Fran has been singing Yiddish songs for young and old alike, and has spent over 30 years teaching Yiddish, Hebrew, Jewish and folk music to students in Philadelphia. “Israeli born. Received her B.A. in Piano Performance from the Chicago Music College and M.A. in Composition from Indiana School of Music in Bloomington, both degrees with Distinction. While a student she received the First Prize in the Molly Margolis Piano Competition in Chicago, as well as numerous scholarships and Distinctions. Among her teachers were Prof. Ludmila Lazar (Piano) and Prof. Fred Fox (Composition) Ms. Pelleg studied conducting with Henry Mazer, Associate conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Pelleg was awarded a conducting fellowship to the Aspen Music Festival, a scholarship to study with Frederick Prauznitz at Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hoplkins University in Baltimore, and a fellowship to a special master class with Max Rudolph at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. In addition, she participated in Master Classes with Sergiu Celibidacce in The Munich Philharmonic and Ghenadi Rhozdesvensky in Sienna.…

There are only two performances, November 2nd and 3rd 2012. “The Vienna Rite” is the story of a new service composed in 1828 by Viennese Cantor Salomon Sulzer in collaboration with Franz Schubert and other Viennese composers which sought to merge European music with synagogue chant.

It is being performed by the new music ensemble Yarn/Wire along with guests Brian Chase and Chi-Chi Glass and features the amazing baritone Ian Greenlaw as Salomon Sulzer along with singers Lana Cencic, Allyssa Lamb, Bo Chang, Judith Berkson, Aram Tchobanian and Gavriel Savit. It is set in the historic Stadttempel with costumes and set design by Audrey Robinson.…

The Hazamir JHSC sends this newstory about a landmark concert held May 21 in New York City:
HaZamir: The International Jewish High School
Choir, broke new ground as it celebrated its bar mitzvah with a
Weekend Festival and Concert May 19-21st. Founder
and Director Matthew Lazar welcomed nearly
1,000 audience members in a concert that reached a
new height for the HaZamir movement. More
than 200 singers from choirs across the globe came
together in a unique blend of Shabbat, singing, and
synergy for an unparalleled weekend.

The Gala Concert at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall
featured two world premieres especially commisioned
for HaZamir by composers Nick Page and Meir
Finkelstein.

The concert also saw HaZamir
alumni from the past 13 years of the program

Judah Magnes Museum Library and Archives

The Judah Magnes Museum, located in Berkeley, California is open to the public. The Library contains Jewish recorded music and sheet music. Among the collections are a large number of 78 recordings. The Museum asks researchers to phone first and make an appointment at 510-549-6939. They are generally open Sundays–Thursdays, but closed on Jewish and Federal holidays, and are located at 2911 Russell Street, Berkeley, CA 94705.
