I’m teaching an online course in Jewish music through Hebrew College of Boston. It’s called “Music of the Jewish People.” You won’t have to be able to read music, although of course, that always helps! However, it’s not actually required for taking this course. It’s all online, and there’s no particular “class time.” You “attend” the course completely online, get your resources and discussion online. The course is a college-level course and is intended for individuals who have completed high school and above.
You have to register and pay for the course registration through the Hebrew College.
After September 4th, there is a late registration fee, so register right away!

Karl Goldmark was a key figure of the musical culture of the Austro-Hungarian
Monarchy. He was born in a Hungarian city as a son of a Jewish chazzan, but his
activity concentrated mostly to Vienna. He considered himself Hungarian, but all of
his operas were composed in German and, except Gatz von Berlichingen, premiered in
Vienna. Thus, his life and oeuvre represents not only the problematic questions of
citizenship, religion and national identity in Central Europe at the turn of the
century, but also their impact on a variety of musical genres (operas, symphonic

The Jewish Music WebCenter was started by Judith Pinnolis, a librarian at Brandeis University in April, 1996, as an experiment in online bibliography. At that time, there were only about 75 websites of Jewish Music and a bibliography of 40 selected print reference sources. The centennial of the death of Sholem Aleichem (Rabinovich), the most well-known and celebrated Yiddish author , creates an opportunity to revisit his life and work. His direct and indirect influence permeates literary, theatrical, and cinematic representations of East European Jewish life and, in his late work, America. Straddling the fine line between empathy and irony, Sholem Aleichem’s writing is a sensitive guide to the vicissitudes of cultural modernization, secularization, migration, and revolution.

The award-winning musical documentary ALL THE WAY THROUGH EVENING chronicles the era when the HIV/AIDS pandemic swept through a downtown arts community and ravaged it. This paper is part of an ongoing project on the analysis of Jewish
cantillation in the Eastern Ashkenazic tradition. Jewish cantillation involves
the intoned reading of Biblical texts with melodies determined by accent
marks (te’amim) in printed Hebrew bibles. In other parts of the study, Malin
has explored aspects of the system broadly: how the melodies correlate with
and project text phrasing, and how they vary depending on the reading and
occasion.
