GOLDEN HORN RELEASES “VERETSKI PASS”

Cookie Segelstein: Violin, scordatura violin, viola
Joshua Horowitz: Chromatic button accordion, tsimbl
Stuart Brotman: Bass, basy, baraban

Golden Horn Records is proud to announce its release of Veretski Pass,
Traditional East European Jewish Music by the trio of the same name made
up of klezmer veterans Cookie Segelstein, Joshua Horowitz and Stuart
Brotman.
Much of the music on this recording comes from and near the
region of the Veretski Pass (after which the group is named) in the
Transcarpathian region of what is now Ukraine, the main crossroads
through which the Jews traversed the Carpathian Bow. Some melodies were
passed on to Cookie by her father who was born in the town of Nizhni
Veretski, at the base of this pass. Others were collected by the members
themselves in their travels throughout Eastern Europe.…

Shevet Achim Featured on Richard Nunemaker CD

Shevet Achim (Brothers Dwell) by Meira Warshauer featured on New Richard
Nunemaker CD Project – Work Has Special Relevance for Today
Clarinetist Richard Nunemaker has released a new CD “The Louisville
Project”,
which features Meira Warshauer’s “Shevet Achim (Brothers Dwell).”
The Louisville Project (AUR CD 3127). The piece, for two bass clarinets, is a response to the troubled
relationship between the descendants of half-brothers Yitzchak and
Yishmael (sons of Abraham), now Israelis and Palestinians. Written in
fall, 2000, the piece roils with the conflict between the two peoples,
expressing both intense animosity and common identification. It has been
observed that the most strongly felt conflicts are between peoples whose
lives and histories are intertwined on many levels.

Eight Nights of Joy from Live Concert

Joe Black and Maxwell Street Klezmer Band An early-bird Chanukah album reached JMWC even before Rosh Hashonah! The Maxwell Street Klezmer Band teamed up with Rabbi Joe Black to create a great Chanukah show for Temple Sholom in Chicago. Now you can join in the fun. It’s more than a children’s album, although there are some great pieces for the kids, especially the new ones composed by Joe Black. He has a great ear for combining lyrics with the American folk and country sound which work well and sound great for kids. There are also some fantastic jazz arrangements with Maxwell Street. Joe Black also has some moving pieces that are for the parents too, such as “Faith is Not A Flag”. Lori Lippitz has such a wonderful voice as everyone knows from over twenty years in previous albums,– and she’s featured in “Chanukah Lights.” Kimber Leigh Nussbaum, a lead singer with the group, is also terrific in “Abi Gezunt”, a song that has been done so many times, it takes a lot of energy to make it fresh.…

Yaffa Yarkoni, (December 24,1925-Jan 1, 2012). Born in Giv’ atayim, Israel. Yarkoni, as many of her generation, was the child of immigrants from the Caucuses. She was the daughter of Malka Alhassof and Avraham Abramov, the middle daughter of three children. Each parent had migrated early in the 20th century. Avraham Abramov, a fabric and carpet dealer, met Malka in Tel Aviv and married her there. Later, he left his family and moved to South Africa. Meanwhile, Malka was left to raise the children. She owned Tslil coffee house in Givatayim (Givat Rambam). All three young children (including Yaffa’s siblings Binyamin, Tikva) proved to have musical talent in singing, dancing and playing musical instruments. They started off in a teenage group Basmati. Yaffa attended Gertrude Kraus Dance School and from there succeeded in landing a place with the dance troupe of the Palestine Opera Company.…

Jewish Traditions for Classical and Fingerstyle Guitar: Traditional Jewish Melodies Arranged for Guitar– Solos and Duets

By Ellen S. Whitaker

Ellen S. Whitaker, a guitar teacher in North Carolina, has created an excellent book of guitar arrangements of Jewish favorite melodies. The book is intended for intermediate to advanced guitar players, with a few easier pieces. It includes a key to the guitar notation used in the work, the texts to the songs in transliteration, occasionally in Hebrew text, with English and an annotation about the meaning of the song along with performance notes about each piece. The guitar music, both solos and duets are presented in a separate section, which is an excellent arrangement of the book for learning and performance. The end of the collection includes an appendix explaining the Jewish modes, a second appendix linking each piece with the mode used, a glossary of each of the musical terms, a bibliography and discography.…

West Bank Story wins Oscar for Best Live Action Short

Here’s a letter just received from the musical group Yuval Ron about the Oscar awarded last night:

Dear All,
I am thrilled to share with you the news that tonight we won an Oscar
for Best Live Action Short FIlm for the film West Bank Story,
directed by Ari Sandel.
This is a great victory for us as the film is a musical and the music
(the songs and the score which I composed) has a central and very
important role in the film (as in any musical).
I am so glad for this award because this film was created to revive
hope for peace between Israelis and Palestinians. The film was
successful in bringing out the humanity in both sides, and
highlighted the courageous few who overcome the bias, follow true
love and struggle for peace.…
