Melodia Spring Concert Awakening the Spirit in NYC

Melodia’s spring concert Awakening the Spirit will feature the U.S. Premiere of John Rutter’s new work “Visions,” a powerful work that examines the spiritual, religious, and historic importance of Jerusalem as a symbol of “a utopian ideal of heavenly peace and seraphic bliss for redeemed humanity” in four movements.

The violin soloist performing this piece is the wonderful Areta Zhulla, an award-winning young artist who works and trains with Itzhak Perlman. Reb Ben Zion Shenker Z’L

It is sad news to report the passing today, November 20, 2016, of Reb Ben Zion Shenker z”l. Reb Shenker was renowned as the composer of over a thousand songs in the chassidic tradition, at least 400 in the Modzitzer style. Shenker was born in Brooklyn in 1925. As a child, he participated in the synagogue choir led by cantor Joshua Samuel Weisser [Pilderwasser], then a leading cantor in country. In the late 1930s, Weisser aided his appearance on radio and helped set the stage for Shenker to study composition and music theory. While his parents were from nearby Lubin, Shenker became known for helping preserve the Modzitzer musical tradition of chassidic song after meeting the Modzitzer rebbe (Rabbi Saul Taub) in NY in 1940. He started transcribing many of the melodies sung by the rebbe and others in that community becoming essentially “musical secretary” for the dynasty. …

There will also be a review of main bands and artists in the world. Since some members of the group Magillah will attend, there will probably be a few pieces at the end.

Producer and bassist Shanir Ezra Blumenkranz has been a mainstay of the downtown scene for over a decade now, working with and producing CDs by Daniel Zamir, Cyro Baptista, Eyal Maoz, Jon Madof, Yoshie Fruchter and more. Here he steps out on his own to make one of the most tribal and primal installments in the Book of Angels series. Drawing on his Sephardic roots, Shanir plays gimbri throughout, giving the music a primeval Moroccan edge. THE 2012 ISAAC STERN STRING SCHOLARSHIP

A scholarship in the name of Isaac Stern, the violinist, educator,
humanitarian, and savior of Carnegie Hall, will soon be presented to a
violin student at Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts
(www.usdan.com). The scholarship has been funded by a generous grant from
the Linda and Isaac Stern Charitable Foundation. Usdan¹s faculty will hold
auditions this spring in order to identify the winning student.

Israeli. Pianist. As one of Israel’s leading pianists, she has served since 2004, as the vice-director of the Givatayim Conservatory. Michal teaches, coaches and lectures at the Thelma Yelin High School for the Arts, the Jerusalem Music Center and the Tel Aviv Academy of Music. For many years she has promoted musical education in Israel. Michal Tal enjoys a versatile career as a soloist, chamber musician and as a devoted performer of new music.
Coming from a musical family, Michal started her piano lessons at the age of five. At the age of 16 she performed as a soloist with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. She studied at The Tel Aviv Academy of Music, and from 1983-1988 at Indiana University, and also in New York at The Juilliard School, and SUNY at Stony Brook with Richard Goode, Leon Fleischer, Richard Goode and Gilbert Kalish.…

SPECIAL JULY 17 CONCERT OF REMEMBRANCE AND CELEBRATION; 60th ANNIVERSARY OF ISRAEL,

Usdan Center For the Creative and Performing Arts (www.usdan.com), America’s
premier summer arts day camp, will present its annual Festival Concerts, private
30-minute educational performances, just for Usdan students, at its on-site
1,000-seat McKinley Ampitheater, beginning Monday June 30.

A unique event this season will be the July 17 Concert of Remembrance and
Celebration; 60th Anniversary of Israel, hosted by the international concert
presenter and programmer Caroline Stoessinger. The concert will include excerpts
from Brundibar, the children s opera first performed in the Terezin concentration

SHIRAH, Community Chorus on the Palisades

Led by Matthew Lazar, Founding Director and Conductor, and Beth Robin, Pianist/Accompanist, the chorus performs sacred and secular music in Hebrew, English, Yiddish and Ladino. SHIRAH was formed in January, 1995 as a regional chorus specializing in the performance of the full spectrum of Jewish music. International composer, producer and world music artist Yuval Ron
takes on a highly symbolic endeavor, to unite chants from the three
religious traditions of the Middle East into a handful of harmonic
musical medleys. His deeply moving weaving of ancient sacred music
from the Hebrew, Maronite, Armenian and Sufi traditions results in a
decidedly contemplative, meditative and introspective experience.
Upon hearing a performance on the Oud by Yuval Ron, Pir Zia Inayat-
Khan, head of the Sufi Order International, remarked: “While deep
practice of one’s religious tradition is like sounding a note, a note
of great integrity and beauty, bringing together many sacred

Israeli Cellist At Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall

Israeli cellist Benjamin Shapira returns to NY to celebrate his new CD “Romantic Music for Cello”. He will be performing an all-romantic program at Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall on April 30th, 8:30 pm.

Shapira’s international career was launched after his celebrated Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall performance of the Complete Bach Suites for Cello Solo. This CD features selections from Mendelssohn, Schumann, Saint-Saens and and Dvorak. He performs with his mother, pianist Shulamith Shapira, a graduate of the State Conservatory of Music in Bucharest under the supervision of legendary teacher Florica Musicescu. The concerts showcase a variety of new and standard Klezmer music,
and a wealth of choral music by Jewish composers, including richly
scored six-part Shir Hama’alot by 17th century Italian composer
Salamone Rossi, beloved works by Darius Milhaud and Felix
Mendelssohn, a lush piece by 19th century composer David Nowakowsky called
Hashkivenu #2, Sylke Zimpel’s arrangement of the familiar
folk tune Tumbalalaika, and compelling psalm settings by contemporary
composers George Rochberg, Malcolm Singer, and Karen Tarlow.

For this program local composer Tina Harrington and
Composer-Not-in-Residence Matt Van Brink each created new works that

Grammy-winning downtown legend Frank London (Klezmatics) brings
together a band of seasoned improvisers to play a set of free-jazz
explorations of Ethiopian music. Opening for him is the
jazz-poetry/avant-punk outfit Frantic Turtle, with a set of ecstatic
antinomian poetics, Hebraic archetypes washed in the exegetical Tonic,
straight no chaser from Toledo basements and into New York
underground. The concluding collaboration session will rip through
age-roofs and convention-chairs!!
