A unique event this season will be the July 17 Concert of Remembrance and

This conference is designed for non-specialists, and covers some basic elements of the history of Jews in Europe, an overview of the different instruments, different origins of the repertoire, discussion about what makes the “Jewish sound” (and, ‘is there a “Jewish sound”?), a segment about “klezmer orchestration”. There will also be a review of main bands and artists in the world. Since some members of the group Magillah will attend, there will probably be a few pieces at the end.

The Jewish Museum will present The Jewish Romantics, a concert
celebrating the 200th anniversary of Felix Mendelssohn’s birth, at 1109 Fifth Avenue
at 92nd Street on Thursday, November 5 at 7 pm. This performance features a roster
of gifted young artists from Mannes College, which continues its yearlong music
festival, “The Mendelssohn Salon.” Felix Mendelssohn and his musically talented
sister, Fanny, were hosts and guests at cultural gatherings known as salons, which
included the great composers of their day. This concert explores the music of the
Mendelssohns and of other important Jewish composers of the 19th century Romantic
period.
The November 5 program is a co-production of Mannes College, The New
School for Music, and The Jewish Museum.…

BORSCHT AND GRITS COMBINE when Margot leverett and the Klezmer Mountain Boys perform at Temple Emanuel in Reisterstown, MD, November 23rd.
“Borscht and grits never tasted so good.” That’s a critic’s comment about the magical combination of traditional Yiddish klezmer music with the foot-stompin’ rhythms of bluegrass, as performed by Margot Leverett and the Klezmer Mountain Boys. The internationally acclaimed quintet will present a benefit concert Sunday, Nov. 23rd, at 4 pm, at Temple Emanuel, 909 Berrymans Lane, in Reisterstown.
Playing with the band will be Steve Mandell (who lives in Pikesville), one of the two musicians who did the soundtrack for the Dueling Banjos segment in the film Deliverance. And Mike Munford, a local banjo master is also expected to attend.
Members of the audience will be able to jam with the artists toward the end of the concert, and enjoy a free wine and cheese reception afterwards.…

An early-bird Chanukah album reached JMWC even before Rosh Hashonah! The Maxwell Street Klezmer Band teamed up with Rabbi Joe Black to create a great Chanukah show for Temple Sholom in Chicago. Now you can join in the fun. It’s more than a children’s album, although there are some great pieces for the kids, especially the new ones composed by Joe Black. He has a great ear for combining lyrics with the American folk and country sound which work well and sound great for kids. There are also some fantastic jazz arrangements with Maxwell Street. Joe Black also has some moving pieces that are for the parents too, such as “Faith is Not A Flag”. Lori Lippitz has such a wonderful voice as everyone knows from over twenty years in previous albums,– and she’s featured in “Chanukah Lights.” Kimber Leigh Nussbaum, a lead singer with the group, is also terrific in “Abi Gezunt”, a song that has been done so many times, it takes a lot of energy to make it fresh.…

Clarinetist Richard Nunemaker has released a new CD “The Louisville
Project”, which features Meira Warshauer’s “Shevet Achim (Brothers Dwell).”
The Louisville Project (AUR CD 3127). The piece, for two bass clarinets, is a response to the troubled
relationship between the descendants of half-brothers Yitzchak and
Yishmael (sons of Abraham), now Israelis and Palestinians. Written in
fall, 2000, the piece roils with the conflict between the two peoples,
expressing both intense animosity and common identification. It has been
observed that the most strongly felt conflicts are between peoples whose
lives and histories are intertwined on many levels.

The legendary Klezmer Conservatory Band (KCB), the band that kick-started the klezmer music revival, will open the first annual Boston Jewish Music Festival (BJMF) with a gala concert celebrating the band’s 30th anniversary at the Berklee Performance Center on March 6, 2010 at 7:30 PM.
Tickets for the concert are on sale through Ticketmaster (www.ticketmaster.com) and the Berklee box office. Tickets for other BJMF events are now on sale, most through Ticketweb (www.ticketweb.com). The entire festival schedule is now posted on the BJMF web site.
Two former members who were instrumental in helping build the band’s reputation—vocalist Judy Bressler and clarinetist Don Byron—will reunite with them for the first time in more than 20 years.…

Yaffa Yarkoni, (December 24,1925-Jan 1, 2012). Born in Giv’ atayim, Israel. Yarkoni, as many of her generation, was the child of immigrants from the Caucuses. She was the daughter of Malka Alhassof and Avraham Abramov, the middle daughter of three children. Each parent had migrated early in the 20th century. Avraham Abramov, a fabric and carpet dealer, met Malka in Tel Aviv and married her there. Later, he left his family and moved to South Africa. Meanwhile, Malka was left to raise the children. She owned Tslil coffee house in Givatayim (Givat Rambam). All three young children (including Yaffa’s siblings Binyamin, Tikva) proved to have musical talent in singing, dancing and playing musical instruments. They started off in a teenage group Basmati. Yaffa attended Gertrude Kraus Dance School and from there succeeded in landing a place with the dance troupe of the Palestine Opera Company.…
