The Leo Kraft 90th Birthday Concert at the Center for Jewish History

On Sunday, March 11th at 3 PM the Society will present The Leo Kraft 90th
Birthday Concert at the Center for Jewish History. This performance will
feature some of New York’s finest chamber music players, including flutist
Patricia Spencer, clarinetists Charles Neidich and Ayako Oshima, violinist
Renne Jolles, violist Mark Halloway, and cellist Marcy Rosen, as well pianist
Morey Ritt, who will premiere Testimonium, a new work Kraft has written
for her.

Among other works on the program are New Songs from Old, a fantasy for
solo clarinet based on traditional Jewish motifs and Seven Hebrew Songs to
poems by medieval Hebrew poets, sung by the American baritone Thomas
Meglioranza, with David Jolley, horn and Konstantza Chernov, piano. Hailed by The
Boston Globe for his “vocal distinction and expressive warmth,” Meglioranza

The MFA Concert Program and The Boston Jewish Film Festival are delighted to present The Klezmatics in concert on Sunday, March 11, 7:30pm. On Friday, March 28, “Beyond Boundaries: Music and Israel @ 60,” a symposium of the Center for Jewish Studies at the CUNY Graduate Center, will explore the complex diversity of musical styles, cultures, religions and ethnicities that is Israel today. The daylong event will present papers, discussions, and musical performances from 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM in the Baisley Powell Elebash Recital Hall on the first floor of the Graduate Center, 365 Fifth Avenue (at 34th Street).

In the morning, three speakers will present papers on a variety of topics significant to our understanding of the present-day climate for music in Israel. In the afternoon, from 1 to 3 P.M., there will be a concert by two performance groups: the renowned contemporary New York-based chamber ensemble Continuum, with a program of Israeli art music with pieces by Tzvi Avni, Betty Olivero, and Benjamin Yusupov; and Galeet Dardashti’s all-woman band Divahn, with a program of ethnic and popular Mizrahi music.…

Whether out of hunger for a connection to Israel or mere interest in the music,
increasing numbers of Jews in America — both Americans and Israelis — are tuning
into Israeli music performances.

Singing in unintelligible gibberish as her hands strike the
darbuka drum with frantic intensity, the short, pretty brunette at center stage
holds the audience transfixed as she reaches the song’s crescendo.
When she sounds her final note, the audience rises for a standing ovation.
Though it is her New York debut concert, Israeli singer-songwriter Din Din Aviv is
no stranger here. The performance hall at the Museum of Jewish Heritage is packed
with Israeli fans of Aviv who live in New York and American Jews clutching her CD.…

“ZUN MIT A REGN” (Sun and Rain) in St. Petersburg

The Amsterdam Jewish Music Projects Foundation will be taking part in
the Russian Centennial Celebration for Dmitri Shostakovich with the
programme “Zun mit a regn” (Sun and Rain) that is to be performed at the
Shostakovich Conferences in St. Petersburg on 12 and 13 October. The
programme, which premiered in the Netherlands, includes chamber music and
songs composed by Shostakovich himself and by his friends Mieczyslaw
Weinberg and Veniamin Basner. The central source of inspiration for the
works on the programme is the music of the Jewish people, oppressed in
Russia during the Stalin regime. The works will be performed by singer
Sovali (soprano), violinist Grigory Sedukh, cellist Alexander Oratovski and
pianist Paul Prenen. The performances are supported by the Wilhelmina E.
Jansen Fund.

Keynote, the flagship database of the new Jewish Music Institute Library is now available online and is searchable. It has been developed in consultation with the British Library National Sound Archive. Keynote also includes a “tune manager” and find any phrase in a tune in the database. “Keynote is particularly set up to provide detailed searchable instrumentation of scores and manuscripts.” The Jewish Music Institute is an independent arts organisation, established in March 2000, at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. A Jewish Music Library is scheduled for dedication in March, 2003.

FROM THE JAWS OF THE LION
On 25 March, 2007, in the advent of Yom HaShoah veHaG’vurah, the Felicia Blumenthal Music Center in Tel-Aviv will present a concert of art songs by Arie Ben Erez Abrahamson (1904-1992). Composed before his deportation, during his imprisonment in the concentration camps of Vichy France, and after his escape from his captors, the music is set to texts of Yiddish and Hebrew poets such as Sutzkewer, Reisen, Rosenfeld, Kipnis, Bialik, and Tschernchowsky. The songs give expression to manifold aspects of Jewish life in the Diaspora, the anxieties of survival, and joy in the renaissance of national Jewish life in the old new homeland. Born in the former Czechoslovakia, Arie Ben Erez Abrahamson’s creative process was nourished by the musical traditions of the former Austro-Hungary and the ancient modes of Jewish liturgy.…

This eight session graduate seminar, YIVO’s first such seminar in music, will embrace an array of topics within the wider spectrum of Jewish Studies related to the music of Jewish experience or connection—secular-cultural as well as sacred-liturgical aspects—according to the interests and pursuits of the participants.

This seminar is open to graduate students within any department at all colleges, universities or conservatories. It is not restricted to those within music departments per se, but also open to those pursuing Jewish Studies in general—especially history, literature, theatre, liturgy, or other sub-fields of Jewish Studies—who may have special interest in related music in terms of context and interdisciplinary consideration.

With prior approval, undergraduate (college, university, or conservatory) students may also be permitted to participate—both those with an interest in a particular area of Jewishly-related music and those who may be pursuing related term papers or projects.…

Longy School Famous Faculty Dumont Dies at 94

Long term Longy School of Music faculty member, Lily Dumont, died at the age of 94 at her home, March 6, 2006 in New Bedford, MA. Ms. Dumont was a concert pianist and teacher on the faculty of the Longy School for more than 40 years, and taught privately until around age 92. She was born in Berlin, the daughter of Jakob Dymont, a well-known Jewish synagogue music composer. Lily was famous in her own right before the second world war as a concert pianist, and had already played with many of the leading orchestras in Europe by the time of her departure during the Nazi regime in Germany. Via colleagues in the US, she made her way to New England, and eventually divided time between concertizing world wide, teaching and her family.…

Long time faculty member, Milton Babbitt’s 90th Birthday will be celebrated with a special concert on March 27 at 8pm at Paul Hall. Julliard faculty, alumni, and students will be joined by Joel Sachs and Continuum for an all Babbitt program. Featured works include Beaten Paths (1988), Melismata (1982), Manifold Music (1995), Concerto piccolino (1999) and More Melismata (2005). And music as well as marching played a part.

PRAGUE (JTA) – With several hundred neo-Nazis preparing to descend
upon Prague’s Jewish quarter for a brazen march on the anniversary of
Kristallnacht, Prague’s small Jewish community found some unusual
allies: anarchists, a Muslim leader and thousands of non-Jewish
Czechs.

On a freezing Sabbath afternoon that marked the 69th anniversary of
the Night of Broken Glass, the neo-Nazis got the boot in the Czech
capital — literally, in some cases.

Thousands of Czechs filled the streets Saturday to protest the
neo-Nazis in an unusually large and emotional show of solidarity with
the country’s Jews that in some cases turned violent. . .

Only about 1,500 Jews live in Prague, but some 3,000 to 4,000
demonstrators turned out for the day’s events.…

300 singers from 22 cities across the U.S. and Israel take part in the 20th anniversary concerts of HaZamir: The International Jewish High School Choir at Jazz at Lincoln Center on Sunday March 17. The back-to-back concerts, at 3pm and at 6:30pm, are the annual culmination of a year-long teen program sponsored by the Zamir Choral Foundation in New York. Zamir is the only organization of its kind to use Jewish choral singing as a vehicle to foster Jewish identity, community and continuity.

Born, 1887, Lodz, Poland. Died, February, 1945, in slave labor camp, under Nazi occupation. Violinist, conductor, composer, and theater critic. Secret diaries found underground after the war mention Beigelman conducting the first symphonic concert in the Lodz Ghetto, March 1, 1941, followed by a concert for chorus and orchestra on March 13th. A Cantorial Concert in Ocala, Florida

Temple Beth Shalom of Ocala presents A Cantorial Concert to be held Sunday, May 15, 2005 at 4:00 PM at the Appleton Museum of Art, 4333 NE Silver Springs Boulevard, Ocala. The concert is a unique opportunity to hear wonderful Jewish melodies sung by a diverse and exciting group of Cantors and Soloists.

You will hear an afternoon of Jewish song, featuring Temple Beth Shalom’s Rabbi/Cantor Samuel Dov Berman, his brother Steve Berman who sings in the Master Chorale of LA and some of Tampa Bay area’s finest voices. You will be delighted to hear some familiar Broadway favorites as well as Jewish cultural and sacred selections.

General admission is $18.00 for adults, $15.00 for seniors and youth. Preferred

Mike Eisenstadt, z”l , Host of Sunday Simcha Radio dead at 54.

It is with sadness that we recognize, Sunday Simcha, hosted by Mike Eisenstadt is no longer available. Mike died Friday Sept. 2, 2005 from a long battle with cancer at age 54. Eisenstadt hosted the Jewish radio show for over twenty years, starting in 1985. He kept it up continually. and it was the Florida Gulf Coast’s only Jewish radio show. Kabala by Matthew Fields

Turning elements from “Chad Gadya” interleaved with Rosh Hashanah themes in a trombone brass quartet canonic segment is only one of the many interesting twists of the compositions of Matthew H. Fields recording Kabala. Fields has several ‘classical’ music pieces all with extremely unusual uses of Jewish thematic content. The above description comes from “Call of the Shofar” (1992) which is set for tenor trombones, and bass trombone. And I’ll bet you’ve never heard a carillon performing the Sh’ma as the base tune (cantus firmus) of a toccata. “A carillon is a frame of beams and girder to which 23 or more bells are bolted” …so it’s something like playing a xylophone and organ at the same time, only bells ringing…of course that’s not the end… Then there’s Kabala (1993) which is an intriguing composition for clarinet, viola and piano, and a mood piece I liked a lot for it’s mystery and lyrical qualities.…

Shoshana Damari dies in Tel Aviv

Shoshana DamariShoshana Damari, with a completely distinctive voice, and a career as one of Israel’s favorite singers, died on Tuesday, February 14, 2006 at a hospital in Israel from pneumonia. She was 83. Damari was called by Haaretz newspaper as the “Queen of Israeli Song” , others the “diva of popular song”. Damari was born in Yemen, in the city of Damar, migrating with her family to Israel in 1924. She was a child prodigy and sang at many functions in her community. As a young teenager, she went to seek her career in Tel Aviv, landing a job at the Li-La-Lo Theater and becoming a permanent cast member. One of her solo numbers was by Shlomo Wilenski, called “Kalaniot” (Anemones) and it became her signature song.…

“Joel Rubin is Assistant Professor of Music in the Performance Program at the University of Virginia. He attended the California Institute of the Arts and received a BFA in clarinet performance from the State University of New York at Purchase (1978). His principal teachers were Richard Stoltzman and Kalmen Opperman. Rubin holds a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from City University of London (2001). Rubin is an internationally acclaimed performer of Jewish instrumental klezmer music and hasidic music. In addition to performances with traditional musicians such as the Epstein Brothers (USA) and Moshe Berlin (Israel), he was the founder and clarinetist of some of the most internationally respected klezmer ensembles, including the Joel Rubin Jewish Music Ensemble and Brave Old World. Rubin’s fifth solo album, “Midnight Prayer”, came out in 2007 on Traditional Crossroads.…

will present Rabbi David Zaslow and Rabbi Shefa Gold in a weekend of prayer and
song. The event will open on Friday evening, April 6th with a Kabbalat Shabbat

USDAN CENTER STUDENTS TO PRESENT UNIQUE GALA PERFORMANCE OF ERNEST BLOCH’S SACRED SERVICE ON AUGUST 4TH.

CONCERT WILL HONOR BLOCH 50 YEARS AFTER HIS DEATH.
CONDUCTOR AND SOLOIST ARE LEADING YOUNG ARTISTS.

On Wednesday evening, August 4th, Usdan Center students will present a
historic performance of one of Ernest Bloch’s greatest works, his Sacred
Service (Avodath Hakodesh) for orchestra, chorus, and baritone soloist.
Sacred Service has rarely been presented by young people, and its
performance on August 4th will be an artistic point of pride for Usdan, and
for its partner organization, UJA-Federation of New York.

Usdan’s senior orchestra and chorus will close the Center’s August 4th Gala
Concert with two parts of Sacred Service. The ensembles, composed of high
school-aged music students, will be conducted by Adam Glaser, a Usdan Center
alumnus, and the conductor of Juilliard’s top Pre-College orchestra.…
