While few remember that the origins of Yiddish literature can also be traced to the Italian Renaissance, today’s Italy has seen an unprecedented revival of “all things Yiddish,” including literature, theater, and music. This album really has to be heard!–The Jewish Music WebCenter
Brown University has launced a Yiddish Sheet Music Collection as part of its Center for Digital Initiatives. So far, it’s a work in progress… they’ve digitized and catalogued about 200 pieces from holdings of around 2000 pieces of Yiddish sheet music. The project is impressive for ease of use, featuring both browsing and searching capabilities. The librarian who has catalogued this is Rosemary Cullen of the John Hay Library, featured in an article in the
Forward on March 24 . The music is available for you to enjoy (non-commercially) online, and there are lots of rewarding images of the stars of yesteryear from the Yiddish stage . The Judaica Sound ArchivesR (JSA) at Florida Atlantic University
Libraries has obtained the rights to offer on its website a major collection
of performances by the Bursteins, one of the most enduring family names in
Yiddish entertainment.
The JSA, located on FAU’s Boca Raton campus, created the collection
from holdings that had been donated to the archives at different times and
from different sources. It includes 33 albums and features the combined
works of Pesach Burstein, who produced musicals for audiences worldwide in
the 1920s; his wife, Lillian Lux, who joined his troupe when she was 17; and
their twins, Susan Burstein-Roth and Mike (Burstein) Burstyn. One can listen
to the Burstein family audio collection and read about the family’s

Rochelle Zucker decided to dedicate a radio show to the memory of the French Yiddish singer, composer and author Jacques Grober.
Grober was born in Paris in 1951 – the son of Holocaust Survivirs from
Poland. From about 1980 until his death in 2006 – when he was just in his
prime, Grober was vital and important force of the Yiddish music scene in
France. He studied Yiidish singing with the Yiddish legend Sarah Gorby. The more
he became involved with Yiddish, the language of his parents and
grandparents, the more he realized how important it was to create
contemporaty songs in Yiddish so that Yiddish could be continue being heard

“Test of Faith” is an award-winning one-act opera based on of the
Bible’s most dramatic stories, the story of the Akedah, the
near-sacrifice of Isaac. Renowned opera stars Jonathan Mack and Ron
Li-Paz will take the roles of God and Abraham; Jonathan Zur is Isaac.
Lawrence Goldberg, the composer, will conduct.
Following the performance, Rabbi Edward Feinstein, Senior Rabbi at Valley Beth Shalom,
will engage the composer and the performers in a discussion of the opera
and the story of the Akedah, and its impact on world religions.
With the release of his debut album Ata Imadi, Dovid Lowy has made his very first entry into the world of Jewish music. A scholarship in the name of Isaac Stern, the violinist, educator,
humanitarian, and savior of Carnegie Hall, will soon be presented to a
violin student at Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts

This is the story of why the brilliant Queen of Sheba shaved her legs, how the stunning Vashti laid down the line for her drunken husband, and how a mysterious witch spoke King Saul’s doom and then served him a nice dinner. The Naming, the upcoming release from singer and composer Galeet Dardashti , draws on the Persian classical music and Middle Eastern Jewish singing deep in her bones to transform the ghostly outlines of Biblical women into full-blown flesh-and-blood personalities.

Fiddler on the Roof. This year Fiddler celebrates its 50th anniversary.
It first opened on Broadway on September 22, 1964 and still has great
appeal around the world. As well as selections from the show, you’ll hear
an interview with Theodore Bikel and a comic take based on the musical by
Dudu Fisher,
However the real inspiration for this show came from Stephen Pearl of Stage
Stars Records. The show, which takes place in Eastern Europe in 1905 has normally had an orchestra. However, if you lived in Anatevka you would have been listening to Klezmorim. Therefore Pearl has re orchestrated and recorded new version of Fiddler with a klezmer band using instruments that Klezmer musicians play and a full cast of performers.…
