After a long break spent pursuing other activities, the members of Vampire
Suit reunite at their favorite venue. The band will play on June 22nd at Barbes, 376
9th St., Park Slope, Brooklyn, at 8pm.
As the group’s leader and composer, Jay Vilnai brings to Vampire Suit his wide
palette experiences as a musician in New York, having shared the stage with such
diverse figures as Klezmer great Frank London, Brazilian percussionist Jorge Martins

saxophonist Roy Nathanson, and having played anything from traditional jazz to

The Women Cantor’s Network will hold its annual conference and 25th year celebration at Congregation
Beth El in Sudbury, MA from Sunday, June 10 – Wednesday, June 13, 2007.
All women cantors, cantorial soloists, service leaders, cantorial
students, educators and women who have a strong interest in synagogue
music are welcomed. This year’s conference theme is “Even Higher: The
Cantor as Spiritual Leader through Life’s Rhythms and Rituals” and will
include a performance of the acclaimed play, the “The Mikveh
Monologues”, which is open to the public on Monday, June 11 at 7:30 p.m.

Founded in 1948, a kibbutz choir called Givatron has been named to receive the Israel Prize, announced Education Minister Yuli Tamir on Sunday. The Israel Prize will be awarded on Israel’s Independence Day. Founded in Kibbutz Geva, the choir’s generations of singers and musicians have produced 26 albums. For many Israelis, their music became ’emblematic of modern Zionism.’ The Israel Prize Committee judges announced that this year’s lifetime achievement award would go to the Givatron because “In a world dominated by fads …the band and their repertoire have been for a long time a unique and significant phenomenon to their young listeners, as well as previous generations. A thousand singing groups and bands followed in its tracks and have enriched Israeli culture – its heritage.”
Rita Glassman, the Cantor of Congregation Sherith Israel in San Francisco, has released a new CD “Journey to Shabbat”. Rita is the composer and singer of an interpretive chant of the Hebrew prayer “Shema.” Her recording of the Shema, accompanied by the talented Jai Uttal and Geoffrey Gordon, can be heard on the CD-Sacred World Chants on the ‘Soundings of the Planet’ label. Her newest “Journey to Shabbat” CD was recorded in
Sherith Israel’s sanctuary and is filled to the brim with “warmth, heart and soul.”
The elegant instrumental arrangements (use of percussion, guitar, mandolin,
clarinet, flute) are a great compliment to Rita’s voice, often compared to that of Chava Alberstein, Enya and Loreena McKennit. This recording is a preparation for Shabbat, taking one “on a spiritual journey to greater

scholar musicians specialized in the works of the Middle Ages and the
Renaissance, will perform: “La Istoria de Purim,” Jewish music and
poetry from the Italian Renaissance, which was awarded first prize in 2004
by the European Association for Jewish Culture. In the fifteenth and
sixteenth centuries, northern Italy was a meeting place for three
separate Jewish communities: Ashkenazi, Jews coming from
northeastern Europe, Sephardic Jews from the Iberian peninsula, and

Schola Cantorum on Hudson, the critically acclaimed
30-voice choral ensemble based in the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area, will perform
choral music highlighting the Judeo-Christian heritage with its 12th Ethnic
Celebration Series Concert in three venues. Entitled Sacred Bridge, this second
concert program of Schola’s season will first be performed at Caldwell College
on Bloomfield Avenue in Caldwell, New Jersey, on Sunday, March 11, 2007 at 4

Meira Warshauer Symphony No. 1 World Premiere
Breathing Earth by Western Piedmont Symphony of North Carolina was a great
success. The two other orchestras who helped commission the work will have first performances in March and April.
The Symphony was commissioned by the Western Piedmont Symphony, the
South Carolina Philharmonic (their Premiere performance will be on March

West Bank Story wins Oscar for Best Live Action Short
I am thrilled to share with you the news that tonight we won an Oscar
for Best Live Action Short FIlm for the film West Bank Story,
directed by Ari Sandel.
This is a great victory for us as the film is a musical and the music
(the songs and the score which I composed) has a central and very
important role in the film (as in any musical).
I am so glad for this award because this film was created to revive
hope for peace between Israelis and Palestinians. The film was
successful in bringing out the humanity in both sides, and
highlighted the courageous few who overcome the bias, follow true
love and struggle for peace.…
