New Live Music — Silent Film

SCORE: East and West with live music from Lemez Lovas, Rohan Kriwaczek

£8.50/£6 conc/£4.50 under 15s from the Barbican ticket office: 0845 120

http://www.barbican.org.uk/film

Part of the Barbican’s silent film / live music series, Lemez Lovas,
formerly of Oi Va Voi, directs guest musicians Moshikop and Rohan
Kriwaczek
in an irreverent live performance of a score for East and West
– especially prepared for the JCC – that played to sell-out audiences in
2005 and 2006.

In Sidney M. Goldin and Ivan Abramson’s silent movie (1923), streetwise
New Yorker Mollie (Molly Picon) travels to her demure cousin’s wedding
in a traditional Polish shtetl. Lovas, Moshikop and Kriwaczek’s cheeky
new score takes us from traditional klezmer to contemporary electronica,
from liturgical melancholy to party pop kitsch and from vaudeville to
breakbeat.…

Becoming Hirschhorn Revises and Renews

Linda Hirschhorn Becoming AlbumThere are some memorable albums that reflect a newer and older generation in popular music, Natalie Cole singing a “duet” with her father, electronically created using his original vocal. Here, Linda Hirschhorn revisits not a parent, but herself as the child of the parent, or, maybe vice versa. Putting down harmonies, and fuller tracks with some of her older songs recorded in the 1980s. Hirschhorn, along with some of her friends and daughter, revisits not only herself, but a generational change in American contemporary music. And why do we need more now? Is simplicity not enough? Here, depth in meaning is just as necessary to the spiritual and emotional needs of the generation today, and Hirschhorn gathers her own strength to capture that in a variety of styles.…

Czechs Turn Out for Jews and included Music

This item caught our attention. Good People supporting each other against hate and rage.
And music as well as marching played a part.

PRAGUE (JTA) – With several hundred neo-Nazis preparing to descend
upon Prague’s Jewish quarter for a brazen march on the anniversary of
Kristallnacht, Prague’s small Jewish community found some unusual
allies: anarchists, a Muslim leader and thousands of non-Jewish
Czechs.

On a freezing Sabbath afternoon that marked the 69th anniversary of
the Night of Broken Glass, the neo-Nazis got the boot in the Czech
capital — literally, in some cases.

Thousands of Czechs filled the streets Saturday to protest the
neo-Nazis in an unusually large and emotional show of solidarity with
the country’s Jews that in some cases turned violent. . .

Only about 1,500 Jews live in Prague, but some 3,000 to 4,000
demonstrators turned out for the day’s events.…

Come Light the Lights for Free

Some readers may be interested in a new original song for Hannukah that’s available for free online. The link was sent to me by an anonymous person who claims not to be a professional musician. She wrote the song for her kids in American pop style. It’s at purevolume.com. You have to “search” for “artist” name “Hannukah”. The song is called “Come Light The Light” and can be played or downloaded without charge. You be the judge.
