History

The Jewish Music WebCenter  was started by Judith Pinnolis, a librarian at Brandeis University in April, 1996, as an experiment in online bibliography. Less than two years later, In February, 1998, the Jewish Music WebCenter was born as an independent website with its own domain name.  At that time, there were only about 75 websites of Jewish Music and a bibliography of 40 selected print reference sources. Today there are thousands of websites and many more academic sources of Jewish music interest linked through this site. …

White Christmas: The Story of an American Song

Writing a popular book about a popular song should merit some attention, so it’s not surprising that no less than four items appeared in The New York Times about this book. It’s supposed to be a book about one song. But, of course, it isn’t really. It’s a book about acculturation, assimilation and cultural impact. For readers of the Jewish Music WebCenter, these issues raised by White Christmas, may ultimately deal out the moral: we have only ourselves to “blame” –or– “congratulate” –as the view may be.

Irving Berlin, born as Izzy Baline, was of the generation of Jewish immigrants who wanted nothing more than to be thoroughly assimilated and thoroughly American. Berlin was one of the most successful examples of this, both in his personal and professional life.…

Research the vocabulary:

In looking for resources in Jewish music, the student should start not only with traditional Library of Congress Subject Headings such as “Jews–music” or “Synagogue music”, but keyword searching. Keyword searching is an important component of any search today and especially on Internet sources. Here are some samples of additional ways to access unknown materials and focus searching in catalogs, databases and online sources:

Reb Ben Zion Shenker Z’L

It is sad news to report the passing today, November 20, 2016, of Reb Ben Zion Shenker z”l. Reb Shenker was renowned as the composer of over a thousand songs in the chassidic tradition, at least 400 in the Modzitzer style. Shenker was born in Brooklyn in 1925. As a child, he participated in the synagogue choir led by cantor Joshua Samuel Weisser [Pilderwasser], then a leading cantor in country. In the late 1930s, Weisser aided his appearance on radio and helped set the stage for Shenker to study composition and music theory. While his parents were from nearby Lubin, Shenker became known for helping preserve the Modzitzer musical tradition of chassidic song after meeting the Modzitzer rebbe (Rabbi Saul Taub) in NY in 1940. He started transcribing many of the melodies sung by the rebbe and others in that community becoming essentially “musical secretary” for the dynasty. …

You may be interested in attending a performance of a new one-act opera, Triangle Fire, with music by Leonard Lehrman and a libretto by Ellen Frankel.  It’s being performed Saturday, March 25, 2017, at 8:00 pm – $10 suggested donation; no one turned away

at 8 PM
at New York University, Room 220, 32 Waverly Place (at the corner of University Place).

The opera, a Puffin Foundation commission, commemorates the fire that broke out at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory on March 25, 1911, killing 146 garment workers, most of them young Jewish and Italian women, recently arrived from Europe.  It was one of the worst industrial accidents in American history.

Tzipora Jochsberger, Z”L, died at 96 in Jerusalem

The Jewish music world mourns the passing of music educator Tzipora Jochsberger in Jerusalem on Oct. 28 at the age of 96. (1920-2017) Dr. Jochsberger led the New Jerusalem Conservatory and Academy of Music.   Jochsberger was Director of The Hebrew Arts School (now known as Kaufman Music Center) in New York until her retirement in 1985. Jochsberger may be best known to many as the creator and executive producer  of The Israel Music Heritage Project, a 10-volume video series exploring  the music and culture of Jewish communities around the world.

Hilda Jochsberger was born in Leutershausen, a small village of fewer than 2000 people near Ansbach, Germany on 27 December 1920. Her father was a cattle dealer. There were only a few Jewish families in that community.…

Ode to David Eisenstadt CD Release

Cantor Mimi Sheffer and the Warsaw Singers directed by Sebastian Gunerka with organist Mirlan Kasymaliev have a created a tour de force in the new CD released as No. 1 of the Cilia: The Jewish Music Series. The collection contains eleven selections, most of them from Jewish liturgy, by various composers, with three of those composed by David Eisenstadt. The liner notes are written by the eminent Jewish musicologist and cantor Dr. Eliyahu Schleifer. Most of the settings will be familiar to American Reform Jews, but not all.

David Eisnstadt (1890-1942) was a conductor and composer of synagogue music who was well known in interwar Poland. Eisenstadt developed an outstanding choir in one of the most prestigious synagogues, the Great Tlomack Street Synagogue. He also composed original pieces for services such as a setting for L’cha Dodi and Sch’chula Achula which are included on the album.…

A concert on the music of the 1000 year history of French Jewry, from Rashi to today, will take place at Temple Emanu-El in Providence, RI, Sunday, May 17, 2015 at 7pm. The concert will include music of every era and genre from classical, folk to jazz, with an original script narrated by Professor Bill Miles, and accompanied by renowned pianist Judith Lyn Stillman. Instrumental soloists from the Boston Symphony Orchestra, along with Cantors Lynn Torgove, Brian Mayer and Maayan Harel and choral singers from Shir Emanu-El Choir, Kol Kesem Hazamir along with other choral singers will participate.

Zhenya Lopatnik is a singer,composer, Yiddish songwriter, and Jewish educator. Congregation Rodeph Sholom’s Senior Cantor, Rebecca Garfein, Associate Cantor, Shayna De Lowe and Cantorial Intern, Ben Ellerin will commemorate the 75th Anniversary of Kristallnacht-“the Night of Broken Glass”, with the rarely performed and glorious music of renowned Viennese Cantor, Salomon Sulzer and Berlin composer, Louis Lewandowski at 6p.m., Friday, November 8, 2013 during Shabbat services. Also featured will be the newly commissioned song-cycle, “Perhaps a Butterfly,” composed by Eliot Bailen in memory of Cantor Garfein’s great-grandmother, Settchen Feist who after being sent to Theresienstadt, subsequently perished in Auschwitz. The song-cycle utilizes four poems written by children of Theresienstadt.

Rodeph Sholom’s Organist, J. David Williams and an augmented professional choir, will accompany the cantors. Kristallnacht occurred exactly 75 years ago on the night of November 9, 1938 and marked the beginning of the Holocaust.…

Remembering the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising of April 19, 1943
An Evening of Songs and Testimonies from Letters, Diaries and Memoirs.

In October 1942 the liquidation of the Warsaw Ghetto was ordered. In January 1943 armed resistance to the deportations began forcing their suspension. On April 19, 1943, the Germans ordered Ukrainian auxiliaries to reenter the ghetto to round up the remaining Jews. The Jews managed to resist the assault for three weeks. On May 8 the fighters were killed, the remaining Jews deported to killing centers. The Warsaw ghetto with its 400,000 Jews was liquidated.

We are commemorating the courage and endurance of the Jews of Warsaw in an evening that features Yiddish songs and diary entries composed in the ghetto as well as letters and accounts written outside the ghetto by distressed Polish and German witnesses to the destruction.…

cantillation in the Eastern Ashkenazic tradition. Jewish cantillation involves
the intoned reading of Biblical texts with melodies determined by accent
marks (te’amim) in printed Hebrew bibles. In other parts of the study, Malin

Biographies

Amram, David

American. Composer, educator, French horn, piano, guitar. Degree from George Washington University in 1952. Composer-in-residence with the New York Philharmonic, 1966-67. Composed over 100 orchestral and chamber works. Scored Broadway musicals and films. Director of Young People’s, Family, and Free Summer concert programs for the Brooklyn Philharmonic. Wrote a book:Offbeat: Collaborating With Kerouac (2002). Also plays a variety of folk instruments. Known for his work with jazzmen Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Charlie Mingus, Thelonius Monk and Lionel Hampton. The Washington Posthailed Amram as “one of the most versatile and skilled musicians America has ever produced.” Amram’s family were from Savannah, GA, but he grew up in Pennsylvania and Washington DC. Wrote The Sacred Servicein early 1960s. It was commissioned by the Park Avenue Synagogue in New York, where it had its premiere in 1962.…

The Sydney Jewish Choral Society to celebrate 20th anniversary

The Sydney Jewish Choral Society celebrates its 20th anniversary next year, 2006. Under the direction of Rose Grausman, this mixed choir performs a very wide range of
music, including classical, opera, jazz and musicals, as well as popular and folk music from all over the world. The S.J.C.S. regularly performs Yiddish, Ladino and Hebrew folk music, Hebrew liturgical settings, and stunning Hebrew musical settings
by composers from Rossi in the 16th century through Kurt Weil and Leonard Bernstein in the 20th, and has given premieres of hitherto unpublished choral works by Jewish composers.

A non-profit organisation, the S.J.C.S. performs regularly in concerts which support Jewish and general charities and gives free performances at Jewish retirement homes and activity centres.

Throughout 2006, the Sydney Jewish Choral Society will be performing several major concerts in Sydney.…
