Frank London‘s Klezmer Brass Band Allstars will perform a Hanukkah
concert at The Jewish Museum on Tuesday, December 27 at 7:30 pm. This band has
toured the world, bringing over the top exuberant energy to traditional Jewish roots
music. Their 2005 CD Carnival Conspiracy was Rolling Stone magazine’s #1 non-English

Debbie Friedman has released a new CD “As You Go On Your Way: Schacharit –The Morning Prayers”. This just released CD has a combination of Debbie’s compositions and melodies to the liturgical texts of the Shacharit, the morning service. Some of the songs on the album are new, but many were composed as long ago as 1972. In a way this retrospective is a perspective piece. The “traditional” repetitions, for example are where the text is more traditional (for example, in the Amidah, the Imahot are included in the non- traditional setting.) The album helps the listener integrate the familiar tunes of Friedman with some chanting of segments of the service. Friedman states in her album “By praying we can understand how each Bracha, each blessing, helps us build a balanced and grateful life.

You can use the site to learn the Tefillot, and it is completely free. Most of the Siddur has
already been recorded in mp3 format. Rabbi Zimmerman has updated the site and increased the server capacity to accommodate the growing number of downloads that it has been generating lately. He has also

Ms. Svigals and Mr. Rushefsky brought down the house last summer at
Maverick, and this year¹s concert is called “Mahler¹s World: Jewish Music in
the Hapsburg Empire.” The concert is part of Maverick¹s season-long
celebration of the centenary of Gustav Mahler¹s arrival in America to lead
the Metropolitan Opera and the New York Philharmonic.

JTS will host a performance of excerpts and discussion of two important new operas: As One (music by Laura Kaminsky, libretto by Mark Campbell and Kimberly Reed), following a transgender woman’s journey to self-acceptance. The other is Steal a Pencil for Me (music by H. L. Miller Cantorial School Assistant Professor Gerald Cohen, libretto by Deborah Brevoort), the story of a real-life couple who fell in love while imprisoned in Nazi concentration camps. Following the performance, the two composers, Laura Kaminsky and Gerald Cohen, will discuss their operas’ creation. Cantor Nancy Abramson, director of H. L. Miller Cantorial School, will moderate the discussion.

Rock star of the Reform/BBYO/Hillel movements, Rick Recht concertizes widely throughout the United States. “Recht also won the 2001 American Zionist Movement and 2000 American Jewish Festival songwriting contests.” According to his website, he has played at over 70 Jewish camps. Recht has amassed a huge following in the teen/20-something community. He has albums, “Tov”, “Shabbat Alive” and “Free to be the Jew in me” and he composes on commission for camps and Jewish venues. His website states: “His contribution to the Jewish music world marks the birth of a unique blend of pop, radio-friendly music with Hebrew, Jewish text, and social responsibility.” But there doesn’t seem to be any question of his growing popularity.

Beth Schafer, a contemporary American Jewish music singer-songwriter, won the Faith-based category in a contest sponsored by American Idol Underground (the online extension of the popular TV series American Idol) on July 15, 2006. Primarily a venue for Christian religious song, Beth may have had the only Jewish entry. Her English language songs, Still Small Voice and Love Multiples won an elimination round of 10 from a field of over 600 songs, and then went on to win by a popularity vote, with the public voting on their favorites. The Klezmatics: Woody Guthrie’s Happy Joyous Hanuka (Klezmatics Records, 2004)
In 1942, Woody Guthrie moved to Brooklyn and soon, through his mother-in-law, the renowned Yiddish poet Aliza Greenblat, he became involved with the Coney Island Jewish community. He wrote songs about Hanuka, about Jewish history and spiritual life and about World War II and the antifascist cause. After his death in 1967, these songs sat forgotten in archives. Lost for almost thirty years, Guthrie’s Jewish lyrics were discovered in 1998 by Woody’s daughter, Nora Guthrie. She was so inspired by what she found, she asked the Klezmatics to write new music for the lyrics. “Woody Guthrie’s Happy Joyous Hanuka” is the first recorded release of this amazing material.…

Born on the island of Key West in the Florida Keys, Eva Wasserman-Margolis began to study clarinet at the age of 13. After finishing her Master Degree in Music Performance (1980) at the University of Illinois, she secured, at the age of 23, the position of principal clarinet with the Haifa Symphony Orchestra in Israel. While in Israel, she studied musicology at Bar Ilan University. She has focused on introducing audiences to performances and recordings of music of lesser-known composers in ensembles and solo works. ‘Tangele’ est un néologisme qui signifie ‘cher petit tango’ et fait état de la
rencontre de deux cultures: la chanson yiddish et le tango.
Ce spectacle présente un répertoire original, crée dans les théâtres yiddish de
Buenos Aires et de New York vers 1930, et relate son voyage jusque dans les ghettos
et les camps de concentration.
Tangele est un hommage à l’art de survivre et de se réinventer. Conçu par Lloïca
Czackis après son coup de foudre pour la culture yiddish, le projet a été récompensé
par le JMI Millennium Award (Londres 2002), et a été suivi de publications, de
conférences et de nombreux concerts à Londres, Brighton, Nottingham, Paris,
Bruxelles, Vienne, Berlin, Francfort, Boston, New York et Los Angeles.…
