Tziona Achishena provided this autobiographical sketch: “Tziona’s Achishena’s rich and soulful voice weaves its way through her new disc, “Miriam’s Drum”, created in collaboration with percussionist Shani Ben Canar. On October 17, the Milken Archive of American Jewish Music released the 48th CD in its pioneering recording series that documents music related to the Jewish experience in America. Titled Psalms of Joy and Sorrow, this new disc reflects the varied responses of twelve 20th- and 21st-century composers to some of the most affecting and enduring of all biblical texts-the Psalms.

Common to the liturgies, histories, and spirit of both Judaism and Christianity, the biblical Book of Psalms is one of the most widely familiar and most frequently quoted books of the Hebrew Bible. BORSCHT AND GRITS COMBINE when Margot leverett and the Klezmer Mountain Boys perform at Temple Emanuel in Reisterstown, MD, November 23rd.

“Borscht and grits never tasted so good.” That’s a critic’s comment about the magical combination of traditional Yiddish klezmer music with the foot-stompin’ rhythms of bluegrass, as performed by Margot Leverett and the Klezmer Mountain Boys. The internationally acclaimed quintet will present a benefit concert Sunday, Nov. 23rd, at 4 pm, at Temple Emanuel, 909 Berrymans Lane, in Reisterstown.

Playing with the band will be Steve Mandell (who lives in Pikesville), one of the two musicians who did the soundtrack for the Dueling Banjos segment in the film Deliverance. And Mike Munford, a local banjo master is also expected to attend.

The Leo Kraft 90th Birthday Concert at the Center for Jewish History

On Sunday, March 11th at 3 PM the Society will present The Leo Kraft 90th
Birthday Concert at the Center for Jewish History. This performance will
feature some of New York’s finest chamber music players, including flutist
Patricia Spencer, clarinetists Charles Neidich and Ayako Oshima, violinist
Renne Jolles, violist Mark Halloway, and cellist Marcy Rosen, as well pianist
Morey Ritt, who will premiere Testimonium, a new work Kraft has written
for her.

Among other works on the program are New Songs from Old, a fantasy for
solo clarinet based on traditional Jewish motifs and Seven Hebrew Songs to
poems by medieval Hebrew poets, sung by the American baritone Thomas
Meglioranza, with David Jolley, horn and Konstantza Chernov, piano. Hailed by The

puppet theater production of “The Dybbuk” here in Portland.
(Since then I’ve worked on two other productions of the same
play, leading me to speculate that while possession might
not actually be 9/10 of the law, it was certainly approaching
9/10 of my musical activity.)

Australian. “Soloist, Musical Director and Choirmaster for the Melbourne Jewish Male Voice Choir Brett Kaye discovered his love for Jewish music at the age of 6, when he joined the Great Synagogue Choir in Durban South Africa. Ten years later, he succeeded his father as conductor of the choir, a position he held until his immigration to Melbourne in 1993. On arrival in Melbourne Brett took up the position of Musical Director of both the North Eastern Synagogue Choir and the Keren Or Choir. It was at this time that Brett commenced his formal training in operatic studies, which culminated in him winning the coveted “Lygon Street Festa Best New Voice of the Year” award sponsorship, by the then Victorian State Opera His prize was a ticket and scholarship to study opera in Italy and London.…

L’Association AMJ: Les Amis de la Musique Juive –Friends of Jewish Music in Geneva, Switzerland sponsor exhibits, concerts, lectures, debates and music workshops. HaZamir Event at the Met in NYC

 

HaZamir, the International Jewish High School Choir will have a concert on Sunday, Marcy 26, 2017 at the Metropolian Opera House in New York City, located at Broadway and 64th Street in Manhattan. The event takes place at 4pm and is a Gala Fundraiser for the group.

HaZamir is a network of 35 teen choral chapters across North America and Israel, involving over 400 teen singers in a highly structured music and education program. Through the medium of Jewish choral music, HaZamir, directed by Vivian Lazar, treats teens to a fun and nurturing community, inclusive of all levels of Jewish observance, geography, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. HaZamir builds an inclusive and positively identified community of young Jews and instills a lifelong commitment to Jewish culture, the Jewish people and the State of Israel. …

“A Little Jewish Night Music” in LA

Israeli Cellist At Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall

Israeli cellist Benjamin Shapira returns to NY to celebrate his new CD “Romantic Music for Cello”. He will be performing an all-romantic program at Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall on April 30th, 8:30 pm.

Shapira’s international career was launched after his celebrated Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall performance of the Complete Bach Suites for Cello Solo. This CD features selections from Mendelssohn, Schumann, Saint-Saens and and Dvorak. He performs with his mother, pianist Shulamith Shapira, a graduate of the State Conservatory of Music in Bucharest under the supervision of legendary teacher Florica Musicescu. “Judas Maccabeus” in St. Louis

The St. Louis Circle of Jewish Music and the University City Symphony
Orchestra will collaborate for the second year in a row in a sing-along
performance of George Friderick Handel’s “Judas Maccabeus” December 11th,
2004. The concert will take place at 7:30 pm at Shaare Zedek Synagogue,
829 N. Hanley Road in University City, a suburb of St. Louis. Other music
to be performed includes “Shirey Chanukah” by Abraham Cohen, and a
newly-commissioned piece in honor of the centennial of Shaare Zedek, being
written by film composer Sheldon Mirowitz. Audience members may purchase
the piano-vocal score at the door, which serves as a ticket in all
following years, and are encouraged to sing along with the choruses.

Melodia Women’s Choir of NYC,/bwill delight New York audiences with three exciting and rarely-performed works by Israeli composer Yehezkel Braun in its upcoming concert, November Song. The three works by the highly-regarded composer from Tel Aviv are written to songs and ballads by H.N.Bialik, Israel�s first national poet and one of the country�s most revered and influential writers.
