The Next Link Project is the NYMTF central series of new musicals, accounting for 18 of the 30+ productions in each year’s festival. Hannah, a new Chanukah Opera

On Mon. Dec. 1 at 7pm The Bryant Library in Roslyn will present the
seventh and final concert in the series, “Jewish Opera Lives!”
featuring soprano Helene Williams and composer/conductor/pianist
Leonard Lehrman. This series, which began in Boca Raton last March
and has featured concerts in Teaneck, Morristown, Freeport, East
Hills, and Jericho, has been a lead-up to the US premiere of
HANNAH, an anti-war feminist Chanukah opera with music by Leonard
Lehrman on a libretto by the composer and Orel Odinov Protopopescu.
The performances will take place Tues. Dec. 9, 8pm at Community
Presbyterian Church, 12 Nottingham Rd., Malverne, NY and Tues. Dec. 23
7pm at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, 1 W. 4th St.
in Manhattan.

This will be its New York City premiere, semi-staged, with soloists, chorus, piano, organ, violin, tambourine and 261 slide projections.…

Celebrations: The Heritage Ensemble New CD Released

Celebrations: The Heritage Ensemble Interprets Festive Melodies from the Hebraic Songbook, the latest contemporary world music album was just released by Eugene Marlow¹s Heritage Ensemble.

The Heritage Ensemble is dedicated to the concert performance of
liturgical and folksong Hebraic melodies in various jazz, Afro-Cuban, and
Brazilian styles, with a touch of classicism for good measure.

Nine tracks: four from the Chanukah festival, two from Purim. An
original composition, Yotvata–a mixture of classical and jazz–celebrates
the creation of the leading dairy kibbutz in Israel. An eighth track,
Halleluyah, from the liturgy, is a solo piano arrangement.

· A unique feature of Celebrations is a ninth track narrated by Dr.
Marlow that describes The Heritage Ensemble¹s history, repertoire, and
philosophy. Musical clips from the current album and a forthcoming CD (to be

300 singers from 22 cities across the U.S. and Israel take part in the 20th anniversary concerts of HaZamir: The International Jewish High School Choir at Jazz at Lincoln Center on Sunday March 17. The back-to-back concerts, at 3pm and at 6:30pm, are the annual culmination of a year-long teen program sponsored by the Zamir Choral Foundation in New York. Zamir is the only organization of its kind to use Jewish choral singing as a vehicle to foster Jewish identity, community and continuity.

Important New Reference Work Now Available

Solo Vocal Works on Jewish Themes
An important new reference work has been published for identifying solo vocal works on all sorts of Jewish themes. This highly useful work gives an alphabetical list of composers with appropriate vocal works listed (not a complete list of works by each composer, but appropriately sticking to the scope of this volume). Many useful details, such as birth and death dates, place of birth, musical forces needed, first performance if known, translations of titles, and locations of scores. With some of the dramatic works, a lyricist might be named, as well as a brief synopsis of plot given.But the author doesn’t stop there; he provides useful “themes”, first based on the biblical texts, if used. In addition, he then provides themes such holidays, but also, “Jewish experience”, children’s material, philosophy, Holocaust or persecution, interfaith works, Jewish history, Yiddish theater, Sacred Services, and weddings.…

Judaica Sound Archives at Florida Atlantic University Libraries

Located in the Wimberly Library at Florida Atlantic University’s Boca Raton, Florida campus, the Judaica Sound Archives has grown, since its inception in 2002, into a center for the collection and preservation of Judaica sound recordings. Its unique and rapidly expanding website (www.fau.edu/jsa) allows browsers to search their 78 rpm database by artist or song title, hear the recorded works of prominent artists, and learn more about the program to rescue recorded Jewish music. The JSA’s collection includes Yiddish theater, Israeli folk, cantorial, and Sephardic music. Their goal is to be as inclusive as possible. Access to all of the digitized recordings in the JSA’s collection is possible through dedicated “research and listening stations” in the Wimberly Library. Off-site “research and listening stations” are planned for the future.…

Florida Atlantic University Molly Fraiberg Judaica Collections

“FAU’s Judaica Music Rescue Project is part of the Molly Fraiberg Judaica Collections located at the Wimberly Library at Florida Atlantic University’s Boca Raton, Florida campus. The Collections are open to visitors on an appointment basis. The Project has collected more than 15,000 78-rpm phonograph records of Jewish music, making it one of the largest collections of vintage Jewish music in the world. The Project’s database includes Yiddish theater music, Hebrew folk music, Cantorial chants, Sephardic music and any other music that is captured on a 78-rpm record and can be considered to be Jewish. The website allows browsers to search the database, find out more about the project and listen to the music in a non-downloadable streaming audio format (when available). The Judaica Music Rescue Project is urgently seeking 78-rpm recordings of Yiddish, Hebrew and Sephardic music (both secular and religious) for inclusion in its collection.…

This following last year’s publication of the 500-page book THE LEIB GLANTZ PROJECT that included three audio compact disks.

The website is defined as “Sound ‘n Scores” – a project of the Recorded Sound Archives at Florida Atlantic University Libraries in Boca Raton. It is a unique online approach to music studies, which combines the experience of hearing recorded sound tracks while viewing corresponding sheet music.

The website contains 43 Leib Glantz compositions, organized into seven content areas in the order they are performed in Jewish prayer services.
Displayed pages of over 100 scores of new arrangements composed by several world famous musicians, many by Raymond Goldstein in collaboration with Cantor Naftali Herstik.…

performance of Alfono Rega,’s Symphony n°4 in 6 movements written

NPR’s radio program hosted by Terry Gross, “Fresh Air” had a story on January 2, 2007 on the new CD “Jewface”, which journalist Jody Rosen put together. “It’s the first anthology of Jewish minstrel songs. Tracks include “Cohen Owes Me 97 Dollars,” “I’m a Yiddish Cowboy” and other long-lost hits from the vaudeville stage of the early 20th century. Rosen is the music critic for Slate.com and also writes for The Nation.”

New York University Fales Library Special Collections, Sholom Secunda Papers

American Yiddish theater and classical composer, Sholom Secunda’s papers are 111 boxes of materials containing, manuscripts, published scores, photographs, correspondence, theatrical, liturgical, and art music, and sound recordings. Materials formerly held at the New York Public Library’s, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts have been moved to the Fales Library Special Collections, combining collections to have the bulk of Secunda’s papers in one place.

Playbill carries an article about a new Jewish musical scheduled for this season’s Spring event in DC. Called David in Shadow and Light, it’s based on the life of King David, with libretto by Yehuda Hyman, music by Daniel Hoffman, choreography by Peter DiMuro and the Liz Lerman Dance Exchange and direction by Nick Olcott.The musical, commissioned by Theater J together with the Center for Jewish Culture and Creativity, will be presented next Spring in May 6-June 22, 2008.

New Klezmer Fiddle book released by Ilana Cravitz

Klezmer Fiddle: A How-to-Guide by Ilana CravitzIlana Cravitz has released a new book exploring traditional klezmer music. It’s a teaching guide, accompanied by a CD, and helps the student delve into the style of klezmer playing. Seckund and bass parts pull out for handy playing with friends. Cravitz explains bowing techniques, includes a brief history of klezmer, and the modes of each piece. Each of the sixteen tunes has a listening track to help learn performance technique. She also gives suggestions for effective variations and interpretations from the written score. In the appendix is a helpful chart explaining the dance style that goes with the various tunes, a Yiddish glossary and pronunciation guide, a bibliography and a discography. She also gives helpful suggestions about arranging melodies in sets, or groups of tunes that will work well together without a break.…

American. Ordained in May 1998 from the Academy for Jewish Religion in New York City. Cantor at Anshe Emeth Memorial Temple since July 1999. She had a diverse career in central New Jersey as a singer, pianist, guitarist, educator, and choral director long before she came to the cantorate. She grew up in Metuchen, graduated from Hillel Academy in Perth Amboy and Bruriah High School in Elizabeth, graduated with honors from Douglass College with her BA in Music Education and Piano while taking advanced courses in the Hebraic Studies department, and obtained her MA in Vocal Performance from Trenton State College (now The College of New Jersey). She taught vocal music for ten years in the public schools of Piscataway Township, NJ and taught private students in piano, guitar, voice, Hebrew, and B nai Mitzvah studies.…

Ellen Schiller, Benjie

Cantor Benjie Ellen Schiller is both the first woman to be a full time faculty member at the School of Sacred Music at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in New York and a composer of sacred music. Born in New York on April 14, 1958 to Miriam and Nathan Schiller, Cantor Schiller studied voice and composition, and received a B. M. in Theory and Composition at Boston University in 1980. She continued graduate studies there in voice and choral conducting, and shortly thereafter, married Rabbi Lester Bronstein in June, 1981.

She attended the School of Sacred Music of Hebrew Union College in New York and was invested in 1987. Her Master Thesis composition was “Life Song Cycle.” Cantor Schiller also became a full time faculty member and taught courses in cantillation, basic nusach (prayer modes) and the in-depth study of repertoire for Shabbat.…

Frederick Jacobi

American composer. Born San Francisco May 4, 1891. Died October 24, 1952. Parents were German Jews. His grandfather came to the US in 1850. Born in California, the family went to NY, but took trips to California by train to visit relatives. For religious studies, Jacobi attended the Ethical Culture School (founded by Felix Adler in 1876), from 1901 to 1905, and again in 1906. Jacobi studied piano with Paul Gallico and Rafael Joseffy, and harmony and counter-point with Rubin Goldmark (who later also taught Aaron Copland and was head of Julliard composition faculty). His father died in 1911 and his mother in 1915. Jacobi inherited most of the money from his parent’s wine and real estate holdings, and so was able to live fairly comfortably during his life.…

The New York Public Library Music Division has extensive publications, sound recordings, reference and other materials about music. There are extensive holding in Jewish music. The catalog, called CATNYP, is available for searching online for complete holdings information. Finding aids to special collections are available in the library. Some finding aids have been digitized and are online (see below). The Lincoln Center Branch is located at Lincoln Center, just to the right of the front entrance to the opera. It contains much American theater music.

This collection holds 151 folders in 8 boxes in the Music Division, The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. Classmark: JPB 95-2. The contents are a variety of Jewish songsters and published books of Jewish music. Irene Heskes wrote the scope and content notes for this collection, explaining the usefulness of the collection for studying showing: “Changes in melodic and literary styles indicate socio-ethnic and historic influences upon the tastes of a singing people – young and adult, amateur and professional.”

Leah Epstein is a song writer living in Israel since making Aliya from Chicago in 1981. She lives on Moshav Keshet, an orthodox community in the Golan. Her Hebrew and English songs are wistful, and at the same time religious and personal. The music itself is heavily influenced from a ‘time capsule’ of American song from some 30 years ago, such as American folk, Carole King or Joni Mitchell. There are some highly personal songs, such as “Child of the Heights” dedicated to her son killed in a car accident, and other of her texts are more universally and politically themed. 30th Anniversary of Klezmer Conservatory Band Features Reunion with
Clarinetist Don Byron & Vocalist Judy Bressler; JDub Recording Artists, Golem, Opens Show

The legendary Klezmer Conservatory Band (KCB), the band that kick-started the klezmer music revival, will open the first annual Boston Jewish Music Festival (BJMF) with a gala concert celebrating the band’s 30th anniversary at the Berklee Performance Center on March 6, 2010 at 7:30 PM.

Tickets for the concert are on sale through Ticketmaster (www.ticketmaster.com) and the Berklee box office. Tickets for other BJMF events are now on sale, most through Ticketweb (www.ticketweb.com). The entire festival schedule is now posted on the BJMF web site.
