Ashkenaz, A Festival of New Yiddish Culture 2004 a festival of music in Toronto Canada this weekend. The Canadian Cabaret, taking place late Saturday night (10pm), Sept. 4th, is again hosted by Theresa Tova (she was very funny and effective last time), who is otherwise involved in a number of key programs and not to be missed.

neshama (soul) to Erev Shabbat Services, followed by a viewing of his award winning

of Cantors from the Golden Age, introduce his family zemirot (songs) to the

The music of the High Holy Days will be
explored in a sacred experience by David Chevan with the Afro-Semitic

Sholom of Manhattan will join Chevan and the Afro-Semitic Experience and
with them enter a unique spiritual realm with their arrangements of
original music, High Holy Day cantorial works from the repertoire of
Hazzan Yosele Rosenblatt, along with familiar traditional Jewish
congregational High Holiday melodies on Selichot at 7:30p.m., September

Chai Variations on Eliahu HaNavi was inspired by the folk song
Eliahu HaNavi (Elijah the Prophet), often sung during the closing
service of the Jewish Sabbath. The letters of Chai, which means
life or living in Hebrew, symbolically stand for the number 18;
hence, 18 variations. I decided to give the performer a choice
regarding the ordering of the variations as a reflection of my
sense of performance as a collaboration between performer and
composer (and, for that matter, listener).…

While serving in the Israeli army, she continued to write and sing her songs. After army service, she returned to studies in composition under Prof. Tzvi Avni at the Rubin Academy of Music at the Tel-Aviv University where she graudated in composition. The Judah Magnes Museum, located in Berkeley, California is open to the public. The Library contains Jewish recorded music and sheet music. Among the collections are a large number of 78 recordings. Debbie Friedman has released a new CD “As You Go On Your Way: Schacharit –The Morning Prayers”. This just released CD has a combination of Debbie’s compositions and melodies to the liturgical texts of the Shacharit, the morning service. Some of the songs on the album are new, but many were composed as long ago as 1972. In a way this retrospective is a perspective piece. The “traditional” repetitions, for example are where the text is more traditional (for example, in the Amidah, the Imahot are included in the non- traditional setting.) The album helps the listener integrate the familiar tunes of Friedman with some chanting of segments of the service. Friedman states in her album “By praying we can understand how each Bracha, each blessing, helps us build a balanced and grateful life.

People Sing Festival – A four part Celebration of Spirit and Song’ from
April 5-12, coinciding with the Jewish festival of Passover.
“For four years, Let My People Sing has brought together an inspired group
of artists from around the world to celebrate the human spirit – now more
than ever, we need something to sing about” said Taubman. “I am
particularly pleased that this year’s events will raise awareness and money
for the Jewish Family Service Food and Hunger programs”.

It is truly with sadness that JMWC reports the loss of Debbie Friedman. Debbie Friedman’s funeral will take place Tuesday January 11 at 11am at Temple Beth Sholom in Santa Ana, California. She died Sunday morning, January 9, 2011. Her music lightened the hearts and lifted the spirits of hundreds of thousands of people throughout the world, and brought so many Jews closer to God. I had the privilege of being Debbie’s biographer for Encyclopedia Judaica. She was definitely one of the most, if not the most, spiritual person I’ve ever encountered, even in engaging in everyday conversation. Those that knew her or her music, will surely miss this tremendous musician and Jewish composer.

Service by Ernest Bloch.
The festival marks the 65th anniversary of the heroic rescue of 50,000 Bulgarian
Jews during World War II and serves as a celebration of the preservation of life.

The Amsterdam Jewish Music Projects Foundation will be taking part in
the Russian Centennial Celebration for Dmitri Shostakovich with the
programme “Zun mit a regn” (Sun and Rain) that is to be performed at the
Shostakovich Conferences in St. Petersburg on 12 and 13 October. The
programme, which premiered in the Netherlands, includes chamber music and
songs composed by Shostakovich himself and by his friends Mieczyslaw
Weinberg and Veniamin Basner. The central source of inspiration for the
works on the programme is the music of the Jewish people, oppressed in
Russia during the Stalin regime. The works will be performed by singer
Sovali (soprano), violinist Grigory Sedukh, cellist Alexander Oratovski and
pianist Paul Prenen. The performances are supported by the Wilhelmina E.

Israeli-American violinist Yuval Waldman will be giving a solo recital of “Music Forgotten and Remembered” at New York’s Merkin Concert Hall on Tuesday March 29, 2011, at 8 PM. The program presents rarely performed gems composed by Eastern European Jews, many of whom perished during World War II or were silenced by Soviet repression.

arrangement of a Yiddish theater work.
Joseph Rumshinsky’s 1923 musical comedy, Di goldene kale (The Golden
Bride) was a work carefully designed to both move and entertain its specialized
American audience: Yiddish-speaking immigrants from Eastern Europe and
their families. With pathos (the basic ingredient), love, “Jewish-style”
music, a ritual kiddush, acts set in a shtetl and in America, a shadchen, a
lullaby that slips into Russian, assimilated Jews speaking broken Yiddish, a
paean to America, as well as other compelling features, it offered its
attendees a meaningful evening based on their past and present experiences.…

The Milken Archive of Jewish Music in collaboration with the Foundation for Jewish Culture is launching Eye Meets Ear: Visual Arts Competition for Emerging Artists to select 20 works as cover art for 20 themed volumes of music in the Milken Archive’s new virtual museum.
The competition runs from September 1 to November 1, with winners to be announced in late December 2010. Each work selected will earn the artist a $2,000 cash prize. Anthony (Mordechai Tzvi) Russell, an African-American classical singer of
opera and lieder, has embarked on a project of personal anecdote,
engagement and expression through Yiddish art song with his performance of
selections from *The Sidor Belarsky Songbook*.
“Being an operatic bass (as Sidor Belarsky was) an African-American by
birth and a Jew by choice, the recital repertoire of Sidor Belarsky
provides a unique potential for me as an artist to actively embody the
aspirations, desires and struggles of one diaspora culture enriched with
the colors and experiences of another.”
