Series will present its second concert featuring world class
musicians in the congenial and intimate setting of the Schnurmacher
Chapel. Guest artists Susan Rotholz, flute, Mayuki Fukuhara and
Andrea Schultz, violins, Sarah Adams, viola, and Eliot Bailen, cello
and Artistic Director, will perform works by Felix Mendelssohn

International Jewish Music Festival — Amsterdam

The 15th edition of the International Jewish Music Festival will be
held in the brand new concert halls of the Amsterdam Conservatory. We welcome back the
winners from last year’s international competition for a weekend filled with
music.

The ensembles will give concerts and workshops in the most diverse
Jewish music sub-genres: hip-hop and reggae for kids, Yiddish song, Sephardic
music, klezmer and Balkan music, close harmony and classical.

The free Open Podium gives starting ensembles and soloists a chance to
take the stage and show what they’ve got. The bustling Jewish Cultural Market will
feature booksellers, CD’s, sheet music and various Jewish cultural

London group founded in 1926 and continuing to perform regularly throughout the UK. The choir has performed in the USA, Germany, Ireland, South Africa and Poland as well as Israel. There is a photo gallery and member bios. The group has a CD called “For All These Things”. The website includes an incredibly helpful list of scores the group has used. They have a database which lists the composer,name of piece, arranger, category of use, and their latest performance pieces. Unfortunately, in order to view the scores, you must load a capellasoftware into your computer.

Yaffa Yarkoni: A Voice for Peace; Gave Voice to Israeli Pride; Supported National Morale for Half Century

Yaffa Yarkoni, (December 24,1925-Jan 1, 2012). Born in Giv’ atayim, Israel. Yarkoni, as many of her generation, was the child of immigrants from the Caucuses. She was the daughter of Malka Alhassof and Avraham Abramov, the middle daughter of three children. Each parent had migrated early in the 20th century. Avraham Abramov, a fabric and carpet dealer, met Malka in Tel Aviv and married her there. Later, he left his family and moved to South Africa. Meanwhile, Malka was left to raise the children. She owned Tslil coffee house in Givatayim (Givat Rambam). All three young children (including Yaffa’s siblings Binyamin, Tikva) proved to have musical talent in singing, dancing and playing musical instruments. They started off in a teenage group Basmati. Yaffa attended Gertrude Kraus Dance School and from there succeeded in landing a place with the dance troupe of the Palestine Opera Company.…

Violinist Alicia Svigals, a founder of the Grammy-winning Klezmatics
and the world’s best-known klezmer fiddler, is the curator for the
month of April at the Stone, John Zorn’s performance space on the
Lower East Side of Manhattan.

John Zorn, the composer who was recently awarded a MacArthur genius
grant, opened the Stone to provide a venue for the most creative new
music in New York. Each month he selects a different musician to
curate the series, and for April he asked Svigals to put together a

author, Jack Gottlieb chronicles how Jewish songwriters and composers
transformed American popular music of the mid-twentieth-century. Dr.
Gottlieb will play piano and show vintage images as he illustrates
the connection, citing instances where Yiddish songs and cantorial
music were adapted by Jewish songwriters as they penned tunes for Tin
Pan Alley, Broadway, and Hollywood. The book (which includes a CD)

The conference aims to show the current state of research on Yiddish and Judeo-Spanish (Ladino, Judezmo) as well as their present condition and importance as part of the legacy of the Jewish Diaspora. It also creates an opportunity to exchange views and to share the experiences of scholars dealing with both languages. Cantors Sing Broadway for Benefit

From “West Side Story” to “Wicked,” the music of the Broadway theatre
will be highlighted at the “Cantors’ Cabaret” concert at 7p.m.,
Thursday, February 15, 2007 at Congregation Rodeph Sholom, 7 W 83rd Street off
Central Park West.

Joining Rodeph Sholom’s Cantor Rebecca Garfein and Cantorial
Intern, Jennifer Strauss-Klein are New York Metro Area Cantors, Claire Franco,
Daniel Singer, Howard Stahl and pianist, Jonathan Faiman. The concert, a
light-hearted tribute to the Broadway theatre will benefit the School of Sacred
Music Scholarship Fund at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion and
Project Kehila, Rodeph Sholom’s response to the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.
To date, Project Kehila has contributed tens of thousands of dollars to the hard-hit
Gulf community.

Albuquerque’s annual Klezmer music and dance festival celebrates its sixth year over
Presidents’ Day weekend.

The Southwest’s annual celebration
of Klezmer music and dance, KLEZMERQUERQUE 2008, will present a weekend of concerts,
dance parties, classes, and a lunch with music featuring world-renowned klezmer
artists as well as many local artists. The annual event will take place from
February 15-17 (Friday evening through Sunday afternoon) at Albuquerque’s

performance of Alfono Rega,’s Symphony n°4 in 6 movements written
as a homage in memory of the Holocaust. This event will take place at the Conservatory of Milan contemporaneously with the inauguration of the Holocaust Museum situated in the railway station. of Milan, Italy.

The concert is free. It will be on behalf of the Associazione Luciano Elmo
Onlus in memory of Luciano Elmo, who was a Lawyer, sent in
concentration camp and the only survivor of his group.
He is recalled for having save a great number of Jews, and received military decorations several times.

music, has been recorded some weeks ago in Milan and will be performed by the
Cantelli Orchestra, one of the most famous Orchestra of Milan, together with the

Over 200 adults and children will celebrate
Chanukah, the Festival of Lights, in concert, 3 P.M., Sunday, December
9, 2007 as Congregation Rodeph Sholom of Manhattan hosts its unique,
multigenerational Festival of Choirs. The eighth annual concert will
feature cantors and their volunteer adult and children’s choirs from all
over the New York metropolitan area. This year, the first night of
Chanukah is Friday, December 4, 2007.

celebrating the 200th anniversary of Felix Mendelssohn’s birth, at 1109 Fifth Avenue
at 92nd Street on Thursday, November 5 at 7 pm. This performance features a roster
of gifted young artists from Mannes College, which continues its yearlong music
festival, “The Mendelssohn Salon.” Felix Mendelssohn and his musically talented
sister, Fanny, were hosts and guests at cultural gatherings known as salons, which
included the great composers of their day. This concert explores the music of the
Mendelssohns and of other important Jewish composers of the 19th century Romantic
period.

CHOIRS AND CANTORS SPARK THIS CHANUKAH SEASON

Over 250 adults and children will celebrate Chanukah, the Festival of
Lights, in concert, 3 P.M., Sunday, December 11, 2005, as Congregation
Rodeph Sholom of Manhattan hosts its unique Festival of Choirs. The
sixth annual concert will feature Cantors and their choirs from the New
York City metropolitan area. This year, the first night of Chanukah is
Sunday, December 25, 2005.

A Festival of Choirs is free of charge and open to the entire community.

Koleinu (“ko-lay-noo”)/Our Voice, a non-audition group of 60+ members
who love learning and singing Jewish music together, is directed by our
dynamic and skilled conductor, Carol Marton. Koleinu meets Thursday
nights from 7:30 to 9:45 PM at Hebrew College, 160 Herrick Rd. in Newton
Centre.

Our first three rehearsals are open, so why not give us a try? No
pressure to join; no prior musical or Jewish experience necessary.
