Show us your ELBOWS!), traditional celebrations take literally the instruction to celebrate until one can’t tell the difference between Mordechai, the hero of the Purim story, and evil Haman.

The Ashkenaz Festival, the largest Jewish cultural event in Canada
and one of the prestigious of its kind, takes place at Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre

Lucky me, my husaband and I are here at KlezKanada, –Leaving Boston…traveling through New Hampshire, Vermont and the Canadian border… where it was a relief that the holdup was not too long… on through the Montreal traffic, through the Laurentians and here at Camp B’nai B’rith. KlezKanada is getting an early start this evening with a cabaret starting right off the bat –candlelit checkered tablecloths, the whole thing–with some young singers… , “Papiroisson” is being sung with Michael Winograd accompanying Rena Herman, –who has a nice voice is setting a great mood for the crowd.…

Usdan Center For the Creative and Performing Arts (www.usdan.com), America’s
premier summer arts day camp, will present its annual Festival Concerts, private
30-minute educational performances, just for Usdan students, at its on-site
1,000-seat McKinley Ampitheater, beginning Monday June 30.

A unique event this season will be the July 17 Concert of Remembrance and
Celebration; 60th Anniversary of Israel, hosted by the international concert
presenter and programmer Caroline Stoessinger. The concert will include excerpts

Funny, It Doesn’t Sound Jewish: How Yiddish Songs and Synagogue Melodies Influenced Tin Pan Alley, Broadway, and Hollywood

Jack Gottlieb’s mission is to set the record straight. He wishes to clearly demonstrate through musical examples and technical musical means, that in fact, Jewish music from Yiddish song to synagogue melos, influenced American popular culture. This book could be a coffee table book, but it’s more. It could be the written record of years of Gottlieb’s programmatic material, but it’s more than that. Or, it could be the text of a course on Jewish influences on popular song, but it’s not quite that. It can be used as a broad reference work, and also has many elements of that. The book defies a neat categorization in terms of style, format and content, but has elements of each: an extensive, fascinating browse book, a music record with technical references, and a reference book with listings of hundreds of musical composers, lyricists, and songs of Jewish origin.

The Jewish Music WebCenter  was started by Judith Pinnolis, a librarian at Brandeis University in April, 1996, as an experiment in online bibliography. Less than two years later, In February, 1998, the Jewish Music WebCenter was born as an independent website with its own domain name.  At that time, there were only about 75 websites of Jewish Music and a bibliography of 40 selected print reference sources. TORONTO JEWISH FOLK CHOIR’S 85TH ANNUAL SPRING CONCERT

SUNDAY, MAY 15, 2011 AT POSLUNS AUDITORIUM
The Toronto Jewish Folk Choir celebrates its 85th annual
Spring concert by commemorating the original immigrant workers who founded
the choir. Its performance – under conductor Alexander Veprinsky – features
special guests Beyond The Pale (2010 Canadian Folk Music Awards’
Instrumental Group of the Year).

The concert takes place at the Posluns
Auditorium at Baycrest, 3560 Bathurst Street, north entrance, 2nd floor
(wheelchair accessible), Sunday, May 15, 2011, 3 p.m.

Being held at The Jewish Center, 131 West 86th Street, NYC on September 22nds, 8:00pm, the evening features presentations from Cantor Bernard Beer “A Guide to Leading the High Holy Day Service”; Dr. Peak Woo, MD, “Ensuring Vocal Health During a Stressful Season”; and Cantor Abraham Weingarten “Maintaining Vocal Clarity and Strength Throughout Davening”.
