Join Zemel Choir for Sephardi Choral Workshops and Concert
Spread over two Sundays, 12 June and 26 June culminating in a final public
concert on 26 June, the Zemel Choir invites you to take part in the annual event
called “Celebrate with Song”. This year the music will be Sephardi, from France,
Italy Spain and the Middle East. There will be professional vocal coaches to teach
singing techniques and a brief lecture on the history of Sephardi music will be
given. The event is open to everyone who ever fancied singing, or who already does

This conference is designed for non-specialists, and covers some basic elements of the history of Jews in Europe, an overview of the different instruments, different origins of the repertoire, discussion about what makes the “Jewish sound” (and, ‘is there a “Jewish sound”?), a segment about “klezmer orchestration”. There will also be a review of main bands and artists in the world. Since some members of the group Magillah will attend, there will probably be a few pieces at the end.

Musica Judaica is a twenty CDs containing the music written from 1933 (when camps such as Dachau and Börgermoor were opened) to 1945 in all concentration, internment, extermination and POW camps, both of the Axis’ and Allies’ countries. Talia Applebaum Flashes in the Darkness Album
Several times in the last year (or so) there have been concerts for women based on the album by Talia Applebaum Flashes in the Darkness. It deserves another look for the humour, fun, a bit of blues, a little jazz, a bit of funk, but mostly American folk. Talia is writing about the stuff of her chosen life with the Breslov Hassidmi, and the way religious devotion permeates her life, blended into ‘the everyday.’ The music gives a window into that world –that Talia obviously relishes– for the rest of us. All music and lyrics are by Talia, including blending English and Hebrew with an all female accompaniment. Occasionally the melody and words don’t quite make it, but most often they do, and music cleverly wraps into the lyric.The best piece, (or maybe better to say, the one more universally related to all Jews’ experience), is “Perservere” with arrangement and piano by Shana Friedman, which could fit into any Jewish denomination’s repertoire.…

Zemel Choir in Celebration with Song
The ‘Celebration with Song’
event will be held on the 31 May and concluding in a concert on the
evening of 14 June 2009 at St John’s Smith Square London SW1.
This is the third year Zemel is participating, and the chorus is planning something a little bit different.
Their concert will be celebrating the output of Jewish music from a single country, the United
States of America. On the first date Zemel will be running a guest workshop
focusing on voice technique and other aspects of choral singing. This year
Zemel’s guest workshop leader will be the BBC’s Suzi Digby an experienced voice coach and conductor and well known to television audiences from her appearances on ‘Last Choir Standing’ and the

I’m teaching this course for HC, and looking forward to a variety of participants, from college students and up, from anywhere in the US or abroad. Second Songs of Life Choral-Orchestral Festival in Bulgaria
The Second Songs of Life Choral-Orchestral Festival will take place in Bulgaria and Israel, Dec. 27, 2010 – Jan. 7, 2011. The festival will feature the WORLD PREMIERE performance of a newly commissioned oratorio depicting the inspiring story of the rescue of the Jews of Bulgaria during World War II.

Hazzan Israel Alter’s Music Now Available on CD
At long last the music of Hazzan Israel Alter is available on CD. Lois Welber recently released her cantorial CD, “Prayers of the High Holy Days: Shomeah Tefillah”. (Shomeah Tefillah – “…Who hears prayer” from Hineni) featuring the music of Hazzan Israel Alter. The CD focuses on music from “The High Holy Day Service” and “The Selichot Service” published by the Cantors Assembly. The original musical accompaniment is arranged by organist/composer Ernest Rakhlin and with pianist David Sparr. There is also one song included by Israel Goldfarb, “B’Sefer Chayim” (from Shirei T’shuvah –991900), which score is available through Transcontinental Music Publications.
These renditions are all sung with Welber’s strong mezzo-soprano in dedication to the 100th anniversary celebration of Temple B’Nai Israel in Revere, Massachusetts, where she has been cantor since 2000.…

Study Jewish Music at SOAS
The School of Oriental and African Studies, part of the University of
London, offers unique opportunities for the study of Jewish musics.
The SOAS Music department runs BA, MMus and PhD degree programmes; all focus
on world music, with the opportunity to specialize in regional traditions
including Jewish musics, and to receive high- level training in performance.
In the BA, Music can be combined with language studies, Development Studies,
Anthropology and many other academic disciplines, while PhD projects can be

Dutch pianist and composer. Born February 19, 1888, Amsterdam. Died May 27, 1949, Laren, the Netherlands. She survived WWII by going into hiding, but also gave clandestine concerts presenting works by Jewish composers. Musicologist Dr. Melissa De Graaf has written a biographical sketch of Rosy Wertheim for the Jewish Music WebCenter, which can be viewed here as a pdf file.

Ensembles “IL CIMENTO” is a professional Baroque ensemble from Germany, directed by Matthew Peaceman, that gives specialized performances of the extant Jewish music of the 17th and 18th Centuries. For example, Hoscha’na Rabbah in der Synagoge von Casale Monferrato 1733 in January, 2005, or Hoschan’ah Rabah in Casale Monferrato in 1732, Performed in the Choral Synagogue of Moscow in 2002. Matthew writes: “The cantata to Hoschan’ah Rabbah was an attempt of the Jewish community in Casale Monferrato, Piémont in the 1730’s to expand its own musical horizons within the Jewish context and at the same time to reach out to its non-Jewish neighbors by incorporating musical styles of the latter with the liturgical content of the former.” The ensemble has also played the Ester Oratorio by Lidarti.…
