Over 200 adults and children will celebrate Chanukah,
the Festival of Lights, in concert, 3 P.M., Sunday, December 14, 2008 as
Congregation Rodeph Sholom of Manhattan hosts its unique, multigenerational Festival
of Choirs. The ninth annual concert will feature cantors and their volunteer adult
and children’s choirs from all over the New York metropolitan area. This year, the
first night of Chanukah is Sunday, December 21, 2008.
“There is nothing as special as seeing the young and the young-at-heart join
together in song to celebrate the festival of Chanukah,” according to Congregation
Rodeph Sholom’s Senior Cantor, Rebecca Garfein. “We are thrilled to present the
ninth annual Festival of Choirs to the New York community.”
Highlights of the concert will include the multigenerational 200-voiced combined

We are saddened to report that Judith Wachs, the founder of the Voice of the Turtle, the music group devoted to Sephardic music, died in Cambridge, MA on October 9, 2008 of cancer. Starting out first with just one music volume she found at Harvard, Judith painstakingly researched and recreated songs that told the stories of the exile and survival of the Sephardic Jews expelled from Spain in the 15th century. She interviewed elderly Sephardic people in Israel, and did research at the Jewish National Library in Jerusalem. Her Boston-based group of four, produced recordings such as Balkan Vistas–Spanish Dreams, From the Shores of the Golden Horn, The Sword of the Dove, Bridges of Song:Music of the Spanish Jews of Morocco, and Circle of Fire: A Hanukkah Concert Live!…

Ilana Cravitz has released a new book exploring traditional klezmer music. It’s a teaching guide, accompanied by a CD, and helps the student delve into the style of klezmer playing. Seckund and bass parts pull out for handy playing with friends. Cravitz explains bowing techniques, includes a brief history of klezmer, and the modes of each piece. Each of the sixteen tunes has a listening track to help learn performance technique. She also gives suggestions for effective variations and interpretations from the written score. In the appendix is a helpful chart explaining the dance style that goes with the various tunes, a Yiddish glossary and pronunciation guide, a bibliography and a discography. She also gives helpful suggestions about arranging melodies in sets, or groups of tunes that will work well together without a break.…

Bible’s most dramatic stories, the story of the Akedah, the
near-sacrifice of Isaac. Renowned opera stars Jonathan Mack and Ron

Lawrence Goldberg, the composer, will conduct.
Following the performance, Rabbi Edward Feinstein, Senior Rabbi at Valley Beth Shalom,

“Borscht and grits never tasted so good.” That’s a critic’s comment about the magical combination of traditional Yiddish klezmer music with the foot-stompin’ rhythms of bluegrass, as performed by Margot Leverett and the Klezmer Mountain Boys. The internationally acclaimed quintet will present a benefit concert Sunday, Nov. 23rd, at 4 pm, at Temple Emanuel, 909 Berrymans Lane, in Reisterstown.
Playing with the band will be Steve Mandell (who lives in Pikesville), one of the two musicians who did the soundtrack for the Dueling Banjos segment in the film Deliverance. And Mike Munford, a local banjo master is also expected to attend.

An encore performance of the recently sold-out program at The Jewish Museum and
part of the city-wide festival Bernstein: The Best of all Possible Worlds.
The concert of mostly unknown Bernstein works on Jewish themes, narrated by Jack
Gottlieb, Bernstein’s longtime editor, sheds new light on some of the composer’s
more celebrated pieces. A number cut from West Side Story, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim,
combined with another piece from an abandoned project with lyrics by Betty Comden
and Adolph Green, reveals a surprising transformation as a choral setting in Hebrew.

Several times in the last year (or so) there have been concerts for women based on the album by Talia Applebaum Flashes in the Darkness. It deserves another look for the humour, fun, a bit of blues, a little jazz, a bit of funk, but mostly American folk. Talia is writing about the stuff of her chosen life with the Breslov Hassidmi, and the way religious devotion permeates her life, blended into ‘the everyday.’ The music gives a window into that world –that Talia obviously relishes– for the rest of us. All music and lyrics are by Talia, including blending English and Hebrew with an all female accompaniment. Occasionally the melody and words don’t quite make it, but most often they do, and music cleverly wraps into the lyric.The best piece, (or maybe better to say, the one more universally related to all Jews’ experience), is “Perservere” with arrangement and piano by Shana Friedman, which could fit into any Jewish denomination’s repertoire.…

Thanks to Kol Halev Choir, led by Cantor Annie Rose for sending JMWC a copy of their video of their 2004 Eastern European Tour. It’s a delightful 16 minute film showing the joy of Jewish community members hearing the choir sing in Yiddish, Hebrew, Ladino, and trying out Bulgarian and Romanian. Kol Halev went on a tour of Romania, Bulgaria and Greece singing to very appreciative audiences. The filmmakers share a short chat, also included in the DVD. Kol Halev is also planning to release a DVD of their journey to Argentina. This film shows once again that Jewish music carries in it the seeds of joy, community, memory and bonding. An early-bird Chanukah album reached JMWC even before Rosh Hashonah! The Maxwell Street Klezmer Band teamed up with Rabbi Joe Black to create a great Chanukah show for Temple Sholom in Chicago. Now you can join in the fun. It’s more than a children’s album, although there are some great pieces for the kids, especially the new ones composed by Joe Black. He has a great ear for combining lyrics with the American folk and country sound which work well and sound great for kids. There are also some fantastic jazz arrangements with Maxwell Street. Joe Black also has some moving pieces that are for the parents too, such as “Faith is Not A Flag”. Lori Lippitz has such a wonderful voice as everyone knows from over twenty years in previous albums,– and she’s featured in “Chanukah Lights.” Kimber Leigh Nussbaum, a lead singer with the group, is also terrific in “Abi Gezunt”, a song that has been done so many times, it takes a lot of energy to make it fresh.…

A new album, called simply, Shmoozin’, has been released by our friends from ‘down under’ — Australia– The group is Klezmania and they have produced an album that just hits the spot. Give it to all your girlfriends, honey. Freydi Mrocki is the vocalist. She does a nice job that keeps the album in a even mood. David Breytman, bayan (a Russian type of button chromatic accordian); David Krycer, double bass and guitars; and Lionel Mrocki on clarinet, saxophone, guitar, percussion, didgeridoo, (this is an Australian album after all!) and vocals. There are a lot “standards” on this album, but there are some differences. They start with Leonard Cohen’s “Dance Me to the End of Love” but add some Yiddish verse by Doodie Ringelblum.…

Zamir Chorale of Boston announces that there will be a performance with the Jerusalem Academy Choir at Northeastern’s New Fenway Center in a special three-choir concert at

Northeastern, will conduct sets by NU’s choir and Zamir, followed by a performance
by the Jerusalem Academy Chamber Choir (JACC), considered one of the finest musical

A unique collection of 19 songs was originally written by educator Rita Gold for Head Start. Peter and Ellen Allard, along with fellow songwriters such as Peri Smilow, Josh Nelson, Shira Kline, and Fran Avni, have adapted these songs for use in Jewish early childhood education. The songs teach age-appropriate Jewish values and foster Jewish identity. All of the songs in this collection were written to help children learn the principles of fairness, decency, respect, and caring. Many of the songs were written in response to a child’s question. The Zamir Chorale of Boston, “America’s foremost Jewish choral ensemble,” will hold
auditions for all voice parts on Sunday, September 21 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at
Hebrew College, 160 Herrick Road, Newton Centre. Auditions are by appointment only
and must be scheduled in advance by emailing manager@zamir.org.
Candidates must have excellent vocal quality, the ability to sight-read music, and
previous choral experience. In addition to the audition, candidates are required
to attend open rehearsals at Hebrew College on Tuesday, September 9 and 16 from

Lisa Jane Lipkin, an American singer songwriter, has created a new collection of Jewish prayers and chants based on traditional texts but performed with her own compositions. These prayers represent a spiritual journey for Lipkin, with Hebrew and English texts. Lipkin is a New York based musician who has recorded, arranged and produced for other artists including Sandi Kimmel, Christine Pepe and Neal Bomberg. Her first CD was Raise the Honey. The REFLECTIONS project is creating an anthology of the huge range of different melodies sung in Jewish homes around Britain at Seder, Chanukah and Shabbat and recording them for posterity. Through the family stories of our interviewees we are tracing the origins of the songs and in this way developing a collection of Jewish Musical Journeys – a social history of the British Jewish community through its music.
Each family has its favourite tunes for the traditional Pesach songs or Shabbat Zmirot lyrics and the variations reflect the different family origins. We have already recorded eight different versions of Chad Gadya from Belarus, Hungary, Lithuania, Rhodes, Russia, Turkey and the UK!…
