Singing in unintelligible gibberish as her hands strike the
darbuka drum with frantic intensity, the short, pretty brunette at center stage
holds the audience transfixed as she reaches the song’s crescendo.
When she sounds her final note, the audience rises for a standing ovation.
Though it is her New York debut concert, Israeli singer-songwriter Din Din Aviv is
no stranger here. The performance hall at the Museum of Jewish Heritage is packed

On Friday, March 28, “Beyond Boundaries: Music and Israel @ 60,” a symposium of the Center for Jewish Studies at the CUNY Graduate Center, will explore the complex diversity of musical styles, cultures, religions and ethnicities that is Israel today. The daylong event will present papers, discussions, and musical performances from 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM in the Baisley Powell Elebash Recital Hall on the first floor of the Graduate Center, 365 Fifth Avenue (at 34th Street).
In the morning, three speakers will present papers on a variety of topics significant to our understanding of the present-day climate for music in Israel. At long last the music of Hazzan Israel Alter is available on CD. Lois Welber recently released her cantorial CD, “Prayers of the High Holy Days: Shomeah Tefillah”. (Shomeah Tefillah – “…Who hears prayer” from Hineni) featuring the music of Hazzan Israel Alter. The CD focuses on music from “The High Holy Day Service” and “The Selichot Service” published by the Cantors Assembly. The original musical accompaniment is arranged by organist/composer Ernest Rakhlin and with pianist David Sparr. There is also one song included by Israel Goldfarb, “B’Sefer Chayim” (from Shirei T’shuvah –991900), which score is available through Transcontinental Music Publications.
These renditions are all sung with Welber’s strong mezzo-soprano in dedication to the 100th anniversary celebration of Temple B’Nai Israel in Revere, Massachusetts, where she has been cantor since 2000.…

Shoshana Damari, with a completely distinctive voice, and a career as one of Israel’s favorite singers, died on Tuesday, February 14, 2006 at a hospital in Israel from pneumonia. She was 83. Damari was called by Haaretz newspaper as the “Queen of Israeli Song” , others the “diva of popular song”. Damari was born in Yemen, in the city of Damar, migrating with her family to Israel in 1924. She was a child prodigy and sang at many functions in her community. As a young teenager, she went to seek her career in Tel Aviv, landing a job at the Li-La-Lo Theater and becoming a permanent cast member. One of her solo numbers was by Shlomo Wilenski, called “Kalaniot” (Anemones) and it became her signature song.…

Yaffa Yarkoni, (December 24,1925-Jan 1, 2012). Born in Giv’ atayim, Israel. Yarkoni, as many of her generation, was the child of immigrants from the Caucuses. She was the daughter of Malka Alhassof and Avraham Abramov, the middle daughter of three children. Each parent had migrated early in the 20th century. Avraham Abramov, a fabric and carpet dealer, met Malka in Tel Aviv and married her there. Later, he left his family and moved to South Africa. Meanwhile, Malka was left to raise the children. She owned Tslil coffee house in Givatayim (Givat Rambam). All three young children (including Yaffa’s siblings Binyamin, Tikva) proved to have musical talent in singing, dancing and playing musical instruments. They started off in a teenage group Basmati. Yaffa attended Gertrude Kraus Dance School and from there succeeded in landing a place with the dance troupe of the Palestine Opera Company.…

Born on the island of Key West in the Florida Keys, Eva Wasserman-Margolis began to study clarinet at the age of 13. After finishing her Master Degree in Music Performance (1980) at the University of Illinois, she secured, at the age of 23, the position of principal clarinet with the Haifa Symphony Orchestra in Israel. While in Israel, she studied musicology at Bar Ilan University. She has focused on introducing audiences to performances and recordings of music of lesser-known composers in ensembles and solo works. She has recorded for composer Sara Feigin and finished a recording project of rare music for two clarinets and piano with Luigi Magistrelli. Founded in 1948, a kibbutz choir called Givatron has been named to receive the Israel Prize, announced Education Minister Yuli Tamir on Sunday. The Israel Prize will be awarded on Israel’s Independence Day. Founded in Kibbutz Geva, the choir’s generations of singers and musicians have produced 26 albums. For many Israelis, their music became ’emblematic of modern Zionism.’ The Israel Prize Committee judges announced that this year’s lifetime achievement award would go to the Givatron because “In a world dominated by fads …the band and their repertoire have been for a long time a unique and significant phenomenon to their young listeners, as well as previous generations. A thousand singing groups and bands followed in its tracks and have enriched Israeli culture – its heritage.”

The purpose of the International Association of Jewish Music Collections (IAJMC) is to share information between archives, scholars and performers; to facilitate communication between owners of collections of Jewish music and libraries and archives; and to aid stakeholders in better discovery, preservation and cataloging of items of interest to Jewish musicology and performance.
Origins:
The initial organization of the nascent IAJMC occurred in 2015. During the ICSM seminar at the Royal College of Music, Exile Estates, Archives and Music Restitution (May 2015) and the International Conference on Jewish Liturgical Music, held in Leeds, UK under the auspices of the 3-year international project ‘Performing the Jewish Archive’ (June 2015), the crucial role of archives was identified as a means for safeguarding musical estates still in private hands.…

Born in Israel in 1925, Yarkoni has had a successful singing career in the new State of Israel, starting off singing songs of the Palmach. She was a radio operator during Israel’s War of Independence. She started singing for large groups at that time, appearing in the army choral troupe and continued to bolster the nation’s morale through many of the tough wars for the next fifty years and became known as “the Singer of the Wars.” In 1967, Yarkoni was chosen to sing “Jerusalem of Gold” in front of the Western Wall after Israel recaptured the city. She traveled throughout the world singing Israel’s new Hebrew songs to sell-out audiences in world venues such as New York’s Carnegie Hall, the Paris Olympia and London’s Palladium.…

The Jewish music world mourns the passing of music educator Tzipora Jochsberger in Jerusalem on Oct. 28 at the age of 96. (1920-2017) Dr. Jochsberger led the New Jerusalem Conservatory and Academy of Music. Jochsberger was Director of The Hebrew Arts School (now known as Kaufman Music Center) in New York until her retirement in 1985. Jochsberger may be best known to many as the creator and executive producer of The Israel Music Heritage Project, a 10-volume video series exploring the music and culture of Jewish communities around the world.
Hilda Jochsberger was born in Leutershausen, a small village of fewer than 2000 people near Ansbach, Germany on 27 December 1920. Her father was a cattle dealer. There were only a few Jewish families in that community.…

“On March 30th, the Zamir Choral kicked off New York City’s celebration of the 60th
Anniversary of the founding of Israel to a sold-out Carnegie Hall.
The star-studded concert featured the Zamir Chorale and Friends, including the
legendary

Led by Matthew Lazar, Founding Director and Conductor, and Beth Robin, Pianist/Accompanist, the chorus performs sacred and secular music in Hebrew, English, Yiddish and Ladino. SHIRAH was formed in January, 1995 as a regional chorus specializing in the performance of the full spectrum of Jewish music. Its roster includes a multigenerational blend of amateur and professiional singers from the northern New Jersey/New York metropolitan area. SHIRAH performs regularly at the JCC on the Palisades and has been featured in many concerts in the United States and Israel, including Avery Fisher Hall, the New Jersey and Bergen Performing Arts Centers in Newark and Englewood and the Colden Center, featuring the World Premiere of “The Scroll” by Dov Selzer with the Queens Symphony. SHIRAH also performs annually at the North American Jewish Choral Festival and was featured in the Opening Ceremonies of the JCC Maccabi Games in East Rutherford at the Continental Airlines Arena.…

Launching of National Cantorial Scholarship Initiative
On Thursday, November 12, 2009, legendary American Jewish composer,
singer, and recording artist, Debbie Friedman, will be the featured
performer at a concert to benefit Hebrew Union College – Jewish
Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR) and its School of Sacred Music (SSM).
“Debbie & Friends” will also include performances by The Afro-Semitic
Experience, HaZamir (the International Jewish High School Choir), The
Western Wind, HUC-JIR Alumni, Faculty and Students, as well as surprise
guests. All will be performing the music of the woman who the Jerusalem
Post has called a “phenomenon” and the New York Times has lauded for
creating “a powerful and euphoric body of work.”
In 2007, Debbie was appointed to the Faculty of the Hebrew Union College
– School of Sacred Music and the fact that the concert is a benefit in
support of HUC-JIR and the SSM is something that is of great importance
to her.…
