Additionally, The Beth El Adult and Children’s Choirs, Children’s Choirs from The Solomon Schechter Day School of Greater Hartford and Bess and Paul Sigel Hebrew Academy of Greater Hartford will raise their voices under the direction of Cantor Joseph Ness.

75th Anniversary of Kristallnacht Commemorated with the Glorious Music of Salomon Sulzer and Louis Lewandowski

Congregation Rodeph Sholom’s Senior Cantor, Rebecca Garfein, Associate Cantor, Shayna De Lowe and Cantorial Intern, Ben Ellerin will commemorate the 75th Anniversary of Kristallnacht-“the Night of Broken Glass”, with the rarely performed and glorious music of renowned Viennese Cantor, Salomon Sulzer and Berlin composer, Louis Lewandowski at 6p.m., Friday, November 8, 2013 during Shabbat services. Also featured will be the newly commissioned song-cycle, “Perhaps a Butterfly,” composed by Eliot Bailen in memory of Cantor Garfein’s great-grandmother, Settchen Feist who after being sent to Theresienstadt, subsequently perished in Auschwitz. The song-cycle utilizes four poems written by children of Theresienstadt.

Rodeph Sholom’s Organist, J. David Williams and an augmented professional choir, will accompany the cantors. Kristallnacht occurred exactly 75 years ago on the night of November 9, 1938 and marked the beginning of the Holocaust.…

Remembering the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising of April 19, 1943
An Evening of Songs and Testimonies from Letters, Diaries and Memoirs.

In October 1942 the liquidation of the Warsaw Ghetto was ordered. In January 1943 armed resistance to the deportations began forcing their suspension. On April 19, 1943, the Germans ordered Ukrainian auxiliaries to reenter the ghetto to round up the remaining Jews. The Jews managed to resist the assault for three weeks. On May 8 the fighters were killed, the remaining Jews deported to killing centers. The Warsaw ghetto with its 400,000 Jews was liquidated.

We are commemorating the courage and endurance of the Jews of Warsaw in an evening that features Yiddish songs and diary entries composed in the ghetto as well as letters and accounts written outside the ghetto by distressed Polish and German witnesses to the destruction.…

Yiddish Translation Project Reported

The C & RL News, of the Association of College and Research Libraries Reports in the February 2013 issue that two archival repositories have a new innovative project to create translations from historic Yiddish newspapers and journals. The Kheel Center for Labor-Management Documentation and Archives at Cornell University and the Modern Records Centre at the University of Warwick in the UK are jointly digitizing more than 1500 pages from Yiddish newspapers and journals. These papers are from the 19th and early 20th centuries, and were originally written for working-class Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe.

The project will translate publications such as The Ladies’ Garment Worker. The project is looking for volunteers to translate the documents from Yiddish to English. People can help by participating in the project.…

Toronto Jewish Folk Choir at Ashkenaz

The Toronto Jewish Folk Choir is performing Sunday, September 3, 1 p.m. in the Brigantine Room at the Ashkenaz festival in Toronto. Free admission.
This will be the second performance of In Amerike, for choir and klezmer band by Sid Robinovitch – a terrific piece that was a big hit at its premiere in June. Beyond the Pale is joining the choir, and Sid is coming in from Winnipeg to play the piano part. Toronto Jewish Folk Choir also doing a few other numbers, including a choral version of the beautiful lullabye, Rozhinkes mit mandlen (Raisins and Almonds). Alexander Veprinsky will conduct the concert, including excerpts from a medley he created for our 80th anniversary concert.

RecKlez, the Harvard Klezmer Band, will be performing THIS Sunday, May 9 (Lag b’Omer) at Harvard Hillel (52 Mt. Auburn St in Cambridge, Massachusetts.)

author, Jack Gottlieb chronicles how Jewish songwriters and composers

music were adapted by Jewish songwriters as they penned tunes for Tin

CHOIRS AND CANTORS BRING ON THE LIGHT THIS CHANUKAH

Over 200 adults and children will celebrate Chanukah,
the Festival of Lights, in concert, 3 P.M., Sunday, December 14, 2008 as
Congregation Rodeph Sholom of Manhattan hosts its unique, multigenerational Festival
of Choirs. The ninth annual concert will feature cantors and their volunteer adult
and children’s choirs from all over the New York metropolitan area. This year, the
first night of Chanukah is Sunday, December 21, 2008.

“There is nothing as special as seeing the young and the young-at-heart join
together in song to celebrate the festival of Chanukah,” according to Congregation
Rodeph Sholom’s Senior Cantor, Rebecca Garfein. “We are thrilled to present the
ninth annual Festival of Choirs to the New York community.”

Highlights of the concert will include the multigenerational 200-voiced combined
choir singing an arrangement of Peter Yarrow’s song (of Peter Paul and Mary
fame),“Light One Candle,” and the concert’s finale, “Bring on the Light,” a piece
by composer, singer and actor, Danny Maseng, that was commissioned by Congregation

Celebrations: The Heritage Ensemble New CD Released

Celebrations: The Heritage Ensemble Interprets Festive Melodies from the Hebraic Songbook, the latest contemporary world music album was just released by Eugene Marlow¹s Heritage Ensemble.

The Heritage Ensemble is dedicated to the concert performance of
liturgical and folksong Hebraic melodies in various jazz, Afro-Cuban, and
Brazilian styles, with a touch of classicism for good measure.

Nine tracks: four from the Chanukah festival, two from Purim. An
original composition, Yotvata–a mixture of classical and jazz–celebrates
the creation of the leading dairy kibbutz in Israel. An eighth track,
Halleluyah, from the liturgy, is a solo piano arrangement.

Yiddish Song of the Week

The Yiddish Song of the Week is a blog presented by the Center for Traditional Music and Dance’s An-sky Jewish Folklore Research Project (AJFRP). This initiative is part of a larger effort by the AJFRP to revitalize traditional Yiddish folksinging performance and research on the subject. The website emphasizes field recordings of traditional Yiddish folksingers from around the world contributed by folklorists, ethnomusicologists, musicians, singers and collectors.
Each Yiddish song is presented with Yiddish words and translation, along with commentary from the contributor.
Itzik Gottesman is the Director of An-sky Jewish Folklore Research Project.

Suvenir Kantigas en Ladino
There are only a few albums that are wholly satisfying whether it’s the music, the vocals or accompaniment, the selection or arrangements. One new album that nicely fits the bill is the Suvenir Kantigas en Ladino recently released on CD by Betty Klein of Jerusalem. It’s simple: It’s beautiful. On much of this album are newly composed songs to newly composed Ladino poetry. Klein sings and plays variously guitar, celtic harp, piano, keyboard, accordion, bouzouki, mandolin, flute, recorder, oud, percussion, as well as writing the compositions and making the arrangements. Both the texts and the collaborations read like a ‘who’s who’ of poets, Ladino teachers and experts throughout Israel, the US and elsewhere. This recording is not the relic of some long dying culture, but a showcase of a vibrant society still active amongst a large population in Israel and abroad.…

A few days ago, Moshe (Moussa) Berlin wrote this note:
“Some years ago, when playing the ceremony of 7th of Adar, at the tomb of
Rabi Shimeon in Meron,
There came a rumor that the famous composer and songwriter Naomi Shemer,
become ill. My thought at that time was what can I to help her in that
situation. (Meron is a place where people are praying, crying, asking their
requests for health, livelihood matchmaking etc’.) So I decided to play one
of her songs (Shirat Ha’asabim to words of R’ Nachman), and to combine it
with a Breslaver Nigun.
After I have done it (it was the first time in history that such song was
played in Meron) I was told that one of the Chassidim asked his friend
:”What is that tune?” and he was answered: “Oh, that is un alter nign”.…
