The Marc Blitzstein website contains a biography, listing of complete works by genre, and photos about the composer. Many of these photos are recoganized as being held in the American Memory collection of the Library of Congress, but unfortunately, the site does not label or credit the photographs, so it is somewhat difficult to keep track… or these may be duplicates found in Wisconsin. The little search box didn’t seem to work. However, there is an excellent discography, filmography, bibliography and information about accessing the Blitzstein archive in Wisconsin. Yiddish singer living in Canada, Lenka has been involved with Yiddish music for years. Her arrangements are really quite unusual and satisfying. Lenka was raised in Prague, and her musical training included theater work and vocal training at the Prague Conservatory. Her album “Deep Inside,” which has received excellent reviews, is featured on the website. Many of the “lyrics deal with ‘Jewish’ topics: misunderstandings between observant/less observant Jews, the role of Yiddish, finding one’s Jewish identity, and issues from Israel.” Her Latest CD is “Peace Offerings.”

Concert
FOD is an acronym for Friends of Danny and the concert tour features many of the musicians who played in bands or jammed with Danny while he was alive, as well as many who never knew him but connect with his story. FODfest is a unique performance format: part song-swap, part jam session, part concert. Most of the participating musicians are meeting for the first time on stage.

Born June 27, 1924, Hamburg, Germany. Composer and pianist. Studied in Berlin where she was the “youngest student ever accepted at the Stern Conservatory.” In 1935 her family began fleeing the Nazis, going first to Stockholm, where she studied at the Royal Academy of Music, and then Mexico City where she studied composition with Manuel M. Ponce. In 1946, Hindemith met her and invited her to study at Yale, where she earned a BA in 1950. She worked in several part-time jobs to support herself both by playing and teaching. In 1950s, moved to New York, composing a large number of works over 30 years including operas, orchestra pieces, lieder and chamber music and quite a few piano works. Her works include several with Jewish themes such as A Bird Flew Over Jerusalem.…

Many of you will be thrilled to learn that UC Davis, as part of the Digital Libraries Initiative, has mounted much of the archive online from the collections of Samuel Armistead, Joseph Silverman and Israel Katz. Armistead, of course, did one of the largest bibliographies and collection of Sephardic materials, starting nearly 50 years ago. This is an online bibliography, but also a searchable database of recorded music, field recordings, oral history and oral literature. It is truly remarkable. There are transcripts to follow while you listen to the field recording excerpts! It’s keyword searchable in Spanish. There are also extensive histories online and other explanatory notes and articles full text. Try it, it’s incredible. This is for everyone interested in the Sephardic heritage.

Koleinu, Boston s Jewish Community Chorus, was founded in 2002 by Hazzan Scott
Sokol, of the Jewish Music Institue of Hebrew College, and by Larry Kozinn to
provide a place open to all to learn, sing and perform Jewish choral music. Carol
Marton, known for her work in Jewish choral music, is the founding Artistic
Director.
Since that time, Koleinu has given concerts for enthusiastic audiences at synagogues
all around Greater Boston, at Hebrew College and annually at Hebrew Senior Life. In
the fall of 2009, Koleinu represented Boston at an historic concert in Providence,
RI, marking the 70th anniversary of Kristallnacht a sold-out, multimedia production
that featured 200 adult and youth voices, full orchestra, and narration by Leonard
Nimoy. In the spring of 2008, Koleinu spearheaded Voices Raised Against Violence,
a collaborative concert of Jewish and Gospel music, to benefit an anti-violence and

Currently finishing its second complete season,
Koleinu initially met in the spring of 2002. As a
community chorus, Koleinu is open to anyone interested in singing Jewish choral music. It is a non-auditioned group, currently about 60 members strong. The group was founded by Cantor Scott Sokol, Director of the Jewish Music Institute at Hebrew College and Larry

American. Composer and Cellist. Alan Shulman was born in Baltimore, Maryland, June 4, 1915 and died in Hudson, New York, July 10, 2002. He studied at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore and became a cellist, playing in many orchestras, including the National Orchestral Association under Leon Barzin, and the N.B.C. Symphony under Arturo Toscanini. Shulman’s first successful composition was Theme and Variations for Viola and Orchestra which received its premiere over NBC in 1941 with Emanuel Vardi (Bridge 9119) as soloist. A biography is available online at his website, along with many interesting photos of Shulman with other musicians, a list of works, and a discography. Many of his early recordings have now been rereleased. Besides his many classical compositions, Shulman wrote works on Jewish themes.…
