PITTSBURGH JEWISH MUSIC FESTIVAL

The Pittsburgh Jewish Music Festival, a new annual
concert series devoted to Jewish-themed classical
music, will debut this spring. The festival is founded by
cellist Aron Zelkowicz and will feature musicians of the
Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and guests. This
year’s theme is “A Vanished World”, an exploration of
Jewish culture in Eastern Europe at the beginning of
the twentieth century, and consists of three programs:
1.Monday, April 19, 2004 8pm
2. Tuesday, April 27, 2004 8pm

Di bostoner klezmer is the dynamic trio which plays rarely-heard and newly composed music, including a suite for melodica written by Brian Bender. Their accordionist, Christina Crowder is a former member of the world-famous di naye kapelye. Rosenberg names “Song of the Lodz Ghetto” CD a “must have” in Newsday

Marion Lignana Rosenberg, a writer for Newsday, has named the CD by Brave Old World, “Song of the Lodz Ghetto” as “the must-have CD of 2005” She states: “This haunting work interweaves songs of hope and defiance from Lodz, where some 250,000 Jews awaited slaughter during World War II, with musical glosses by klezmer and new Jewish music band Brave Old World. Sabar drum masters Yakar Rhythms, featuring Aliounne ‘Guido’ Faye.
Special guest on Midrash Mish Mosh is drummer David Licht from the
Klezmatics! Both bands will play separately and then collaborate on a
couple tunes at the end. Alexander previously produced and a

In the Jewish ghettos of Poland and Lithuania during World War II, a world of
dislocation, terror and death, cabaret music thrived. Jewish audiences gathered
in makeshift clubs and theaters to hear newly-created Yiddish songs, rooted in
Jewish folk and liturgical music as well as European operetta, American ragtime
and Argentine tango. .Jewish performers tuned these cosmopolitan songs in a
local key: satirical and elegiac, political and personal, angry and heartsick.
Together they created something rare, scarcely conceivable: art at the edge
of the abyss.

Before the big klezmer bands of the new world arose with their brass and
drums, there were the archetypical Jewish orchestras of the old world, led by
the fiddle and bourne aloft by the otherworldy sounds of the harp-like
‘tsimbl’, or Jewish hammered dulcimer. Renowned violinist Alicia Svigals, a founder
of the Klezmatics and one of the world’s foremost klezmer fiddlers, presents a program
of those ancient and ecstatic Jewish melodies, accompanied by the scene’s
top players on fiddle, tsimbl and string bass: Mimi Rabson, Pete Rushefsky and
Jim Guttman.

Rita Glassman “Journey to Shabbat” CD

Rita Glassman, the Cantor of Congregation Sherith Israel in San Francisco, has released a new CD “Journey to Shabbat”. Rita is the composer and singer of an interpretive chant of the Hebrew prayer “Shema.” Her recording of the Shema, accompanied by the talented Jai Uttal and Geoffrey Gordon, can be heard on the CD-Sacred World Chants on the ‘Soundings of the Planet’ label. Her newest “Journey to Shabbat” CD was recorded in
Sherith Israel’s sanctuary and is filled to the brim with “warmth, heart and soul.”
The elegant instrumental arrangements (use of percussion, guitar, mandolin,
clarinet, flute) are a great compliment to Rita’s voice, often compared to that of Chava Alberstein, Enya and Loreena McKennit. This recording is a preparation for Shabbat, taking one “on a spiritual journey to greater

What to Listen For in Jewish Music

Heller covers the basics. He does so in a rather quirky way with very short, self-contained chapters. On the one hand, the book presumes one can read notes and there are many musical illustrations. On the other hand, he has some basic music hints –such as an illustration on how to relate notes on the score to a picture of a piano, or what a major and minor chord sound like –examples which makes the book seem as if it’s intended for those who have a very hard time reading music and no music theory background at all. It does seem difficult to me to explain Jewish modal theory if one doesn’t have the basics of a western scale firmly mastered. Somehow I’m having a hard time understanding this book’s audience as the author envisioned it.…

IJMF 2017 Amsterdam
Amsterdam is hosting the 20th International Jewish Music Festival (IJMF) from the 4th until 8th of May 2017. IJMF will welcome over 100 musicians from all around the world playing everything from World music to Rap, from Classical to Klezmer.
The competition is for both ensembles and individual musicians, whose music contain Jewish elements.
Besides music, there will be lots of activities for young and old. 
 
On May 8th, the big final will be held in the Wim Sonneveld hall in DeLaMar Theater. Here, winners will be pronounced and prizes will be handed out.

Mizrachi, Alberto

Alberto Mizrachi is now a world famous cantor and premiere interpreter of Jewish song. He’s often called the “Jewish Pavarotti”. He is cantor at Anshe Emet Synagogue in Chicago. He concertizes all over the world, sings in nine languages, and has appeared in most of the major venues of the world. He’s recorded with the Milken project, been on PBS, and appeared in large concert stages. I first met the cantor, (then known as Abraham Mizrachi), in Cincinnati, as a graduate student when he hired me to be a song leader in a part time job at a local temple where he was cantor. It was there he gave me a gift set of the Coopersmith books The Songs We Sing and The More Songs We Sing and said “here, learn these”.…

THE YIVO VILNA PROJECT
East European Jewish Archive and Library Saved from
the Destruction of the Holocaust to be Reunited After 70 Years

Vilnius, Lithuania (September 23, 2014) – The YIVO Institute for Jewish Research is pleased to announce the launch of The Vilna Project, a seven-year international project to preserve, digitize and virtually reunite YIVO’s prewar archives located in New York City and Vilnius, Lithuania, through a dedicated web portal. The Project will also digitally reconstruct the historic Strashun Library of Vilna, one of the great prewar libraries in Europe. Project partners are The YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, The Central State Archives of Lithuania and the National Library of Lithuania.

In 1941, the Nazis destroyed YIVO in Vilna and ransacked the archives and library.…

Adrienne Cooper: A Yiddish Light Goes Out

Adrienne Cooper Khane-freyde bas beyle-buni z”l.

Adrienne Cooper (1946-2011), a leading light of Yiddish song died early last night, December 25, of cancer in Roosevelt Hospital in NYC. She was surrounded by her family and friends. Ms. Cooper, one of the world’s top figures of Yiddish music, brought Yiddish folk and theater music to modern audiences. She was a valued performer, not only for her impressive vocal qualities, but her masterful interpretive style and tremendous stage presence. The all women’s klezmer sextet, ISLE OF KLEZBOS, will perform at the Jewish Museum’s “SummerNights” Series on Thursday, July 25 2013 as the final concert. Isle of Klezbos plays imaginative versions of eclectic Eastern European-rooted Jewish folk music, Yiddish swing and tango.

For five years the Winter Jewish Music Concert has presented large-scale concerts of
Jewish music, with twenty or more singers at each concert.

On Sunday, June 9th, at 4:00 p.m., we will for the first time present a concert
featuring only one singer. The performer at this very special event will be Anthony
Mordechai Tzvi Russell, who over the past year has gained attention as the new voice
of Yiddish song. He will be singing from the songbook of Sidor Belarsky, one of the

Last month in New York, the Museum of Jewish Heritage held concerts of some “new” Mendelssohn works… newly rehearsed after some 100 years. This Saturday Feb 21, 2009, the Austin Civic Orchestra will perform “Fantasy and Variations for Two Pianos and Orchestra on the Gypsy March from Weber’s ‘Preziosa’ ” by Felix Mendelssohn. This will be the first time this piece has been heard since 1833. The manuscript piece, never published, and first performed by Ignaz Moscheles and Felix Mendelssohn was set aside and later owned by Anton Rubinstein. After he donated it, it was lost in the archive of the St. Petersburg Conservatory in Russia for over a hundred years. Southwestern University professor J. Michael Cooper and Jonathan Bellman of the University of Northern Colorado, have painstakingly reconstructed the work.…

seventh and final concert in the series, “Jewish Opera Lives!”

and has featured concerts in Teaneck, Morristown, Freeport, East

National Endowment for the Arts celebrates master folk and traditional artists by awarding fellowships each year. Down Home: The Cantata

Down Home: The Cantata was performed on May 12, 2013 at Beth Meyer Synagogue in Raleigh, NC by the Triangle Jewish Chorale, conducted by Lorena Guillen. Stories Part 1 is part 2 of 7. The cantata is a musical depiction of Jewish life in North Carolina since the early 20th century, with recorded oral histories playing over music for chorus and orchestra. Yiddish Translation Project Reported

The C & RL News, of the Association of College and Research Libraries Reports in the February 2013 issue that two archival repositories have a new innovative project to create translations from historic Yiddish newspapers and journals. The Kheel Center for Labor-Management Documentation and Archives at Cornell University and the Modern Records Centre at the University of Warwick in the UK are jointly digitizing more than 1500 pages from Yiddish newspapers and journals. These papers are from the 19th and early 20th centuries, and were originally written for working-class Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe.

The project will translate publications such as The Ladies’ Garment Worker. The project is looking for volunteers to translate the documents from Yiddish to English. People can help by participating in the project.…

Debbie Friedman z”l

It is truly with sadness that JMWC reports the loss of Debbie Friedman. Debbie Friedman’s funeral will take place Tuesday January 11 at 11am at Temple Beth Sholom in Santa Ana, California. She died Sunday morning, January 9, 2011. Her music lightened the hearts and lifted the spirits of hundreds of thousands of people throughout the world, and brought so many Jews closer to God. I had the privilege of being Debbie’s biographer for Encyclopedia Judaica. She was definitely one of the most, if not the most, spiritual person I’ve ever encountered, even in engaging in everyday conversation. Those that knew her or her music, will surely miss this tremendous musician and Jewish composer.

Winter Jewish Music Concert 2013 in January

Don’t miss Jewish music from around the world: Yiddish, Cantorial, Ladino, Israeli, folk, pop, classical, jazz, tango and beat box (and magic too) in Miami, Florida.

Performed in the glorious 1926 Bertha Abess Sanctuary at Temple Israel of Greater Miami, the oldest Jewish sanctuary in continuous use in Florida. Located at 7 N13.E. 19th Street, the Temple is in Miami’s vibrant urban center, five blocks north from the Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, and near the Wynwood Arts District, Midtown, and the Design District.

The Milken Archive of American Jewish music is looking for good art that meets the ear. The Milken Archive of Jewish Music in collaboration with the Foundation for Jewish Culture is launching Eye Meets Ear: Visual Arts Competition for Emerging Artists to select 20 works as cover art for 20 themed volumes of music in the Milken Archive’s new virtual museum.

The competition runs from September 1 to November 1, with winners to be announced in late December 2010. Each work selected will earn the artist a $2,000 cash prize. Artists, who must be ages 18 to 39, may submit works of art in any visual mediums that express and/or relate to the theme of individual virtual museum volumes, each of which explores a particular historical, cultural or musical theme.…
