www.americansephardifederation.org< During the first half of the 20th century, Jews were virtually the only
instrumentalists in the Iraqi musical scene. All the musicians from Iraq
who attended the first Arabic music congress in Cairo in 1932 were
Jewish (but one). With the exile of the Jewish community in the 1950’s,
many famous Iraqi Jewish musicians immigrated to Israel.
Their legacy is still strong today, both in the preservation of the
traditional Iraqi Maqam, and in its influence on contemporary Israeli
music.

Albuquerque’s annual Klezmer music and dance festival celebrates its sixth year over
Presidents’ Day weekend.
The Southwest’s annual celebration
of Klezmer music and dance, KLEZMERQUERQUE 2008, will present a weekend of concerts,
dance parties, classes, and a lunch with music featuring world-renowned klezmer
artists as well as many local artists. The annual event will take place from
February 15-17 (Friday evening through Sunday afternoon) at Albuquerque’s
Congregation Nahalat Shalom which is located on 3606 Rio Grande Blvd. NW (between
Candelaria & Griegos).
KLEZMERQUERQUE 2008 welcomes back by popular demand the klezmer dance master from
Chicago- Steve Weintraub, who teaches and performs klezmer and East European Jewish

About 10 years ago I was drafted as music director for a
puppet theater production of “The Dybbuk” here in Portland.
(Since then I’ve worked on two other productions of the same
play, leading me to speculate that while possession might
not actually be 9/10 of the law, it was certainly approaching
9/10 of my musical activity.)
After all this time, “Between Two Worlds/The Dybbuk” has been remounted, and this time it’s going on the road. Jazz composer and Bösendorfer piano artist Matt Savage and his Trio will celebrate his 16th birthday at Stephen Wise Free Synagogue, 30 W. 68th Street, NYC, on Saturday, May 10, 2008, at 8 pm with an electrifying performance of award winning original compositions and jazz standards. Israeli cellist Benjamin Shapira returns to NY to celebrate his new CD “Romantic Music for Cello”. He will be performing an all-romantic program at Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall on April 30th, 8:30 pm.
Shapira’s international career was launched after his celebrated Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall performance of the Complete Bach Suites for Cello Solo. This CD features selections from Mendelssohn, Schumann, Saint-Saens and and Dvorak. He performs with his mother, pianist Shulamith Shapira, a graduate of the State Conservatory of Music in Bucharest under the supervision of legendary teacher Florica Musicescu. The St. Louis Circle of Jewish Music and the University City Symphony
Orchestra will collaborate for the second year in a row in a sing-along
performance of George Friderick Handel’s “Judas Maccabeus” December 11th,
2004. The concert will take place at 7:30 pm at Shaare Zedek Synagogue,
829 N. Hanley Road in University City, a suburb of St. Louis. Other music
to be performed includes “Shirey Chanukah” by Abraham Cohen, and a
newly-commissioned piece in honor of the centennial of Shaare Zedek, being
written by film composer Sheldon Mirowitz. Audience members may purchase
the piano-vocal score at the door, which serves as a ticket in all
following years, and are encouraged to sing along with the choruses.
The Gerard Edery Ensemble will be presenting “Treasures of Sephardic Song” this Thursday evening, May 20, at Congregation Rodeph Sholom (7 West 83rd St., New York). The performance will begin at 7:30 PM and ticket prices range from $36 for preferred seating, $18 for general admission and $12 for students and seniors. Zamir Chorale of Boston announces that there will be a performance with the Jerusalem Academy Choir at Northeastern’s New Fenway Center in a special three-choir concert at
on October 26 at 7:30 p.m.
Artistic Director Joshua Jacobson, who is also Director of Choral Activities at
Northeastern, will conduct sets by NU’s choir and Zamir, followed by a performance
by the Jerusalem Academy Chamber Choir (JACC), considered one of the finest musical
groups in Israel. For the finale, all three choirs will share the stage.
The JACC, comprised of 30 music students and led by Stanley Sperber, is also
celebrating its 40th anniversary. Sperber, founded the Zamir Chorale in 1960 in New York and inspired Jacobson to form the Zamir Chorale of Boston in 1969.…
