The songs are in “Yiddish, German, Hebrew, Spanish, French, Dutch, Italian, Serbo-Croatian, Ladino, Greek, Norwegian, Czech, Polish, Russian, Hungarian and English.” Texts appear in each language’s transliteration and English translations. An introduction to each song is given. Often there are illlustrations or other documentation that accompany a song. Histories of the songs are given if known. Authors of texts and composers are attributed when known.
An announcement about this book on HaSafran from Aviva Astrinsky states that this is “a major collection of Holocaust music. Most of the songs have never appeared in print before. Over 300 pages.
The book is divided into three main sections:
Mauro Braunstein, a mathematician and composer, has put together a database of nusach melodies with score that he has transcribed. The database contains thousands of variations of nusach covering the gamut of Jewish liturgical texts. It is divided by liturgy (weekdays, Sabbath, holidays), life cycles, and trope. Within these sections are myriad examples of the melodies and traditions of singing for the texts. There is score set for each of these, and some links to outside sound files as well. The purpose of the site is to offer a leader or researcher musical options to sing the services. Braunstein also offers his services for transcribing recordings into sheet music of those who contact him, which many will find extremely useful. This is an excellent site as a resource for finding nusach in musical notation, although some may find some of the options given within a score somewhat confusing, most will find this very helpful.…

Alberto Mizrachi is now a world famous cantor and premiere interpreter of Jewish song. He’s often called the “Jewish Pavarotti”. He is cantor at Anshe Emet Synagogue in Chicago. He concertizes all over the world, sings in nine languages, and has appeared in most of the major venues of the world. He’s recorded with the Milken project, been on PBS, and appeared in large concert stages. I first met the cantor, (then known as Abraham Mizrachi), in Cincinnati, as a graduate student when he hired me to be a song leader in a part time job at a local temple where he was cantor. Ensembles “IL CIMENTO” is a professional Baroque ensemble from Germany, directed by Matthew Peaceman, that gives specialized performances of the extant Jewish music of the 17th and 18th Centuries. For example, Hoscha’na Rabbah in der Synagoge von Casale Monferrato 1733 in January, 2005, or Hoschan’ah Rabah in Casale Monferrato in 1732, Performed in the Choral Synagogue of Moscow in 2002. Matthew writes: “The cantata to Hoschan’ah Rabbah was an attempt of the Jewish community in Casale Monferrato, Piémont in the 1730’s to expand its own musical horizons within the Jewish context and at the same time to reach out to its non-Jewish neighbors by incorporating musical styles of the latter with the liturgical content of the former.” The ensemble has also played the Ester Oratorio by Lidarti.…

Dutch pianist and composer. Born February 19, 1888, Amsterdam. Died May 27, 1949, Laren, the Netherlands. She survived WWII by going into hiding, but also gave clandestine concerts presenting works by Jewish composers. The ‘Celebration with Song’
event will be held on the 31 May and concluding in a concert on the
evening of 14 June 2009 at St John’s Smith Square London SW1.
This is the third year Zemel is participating, and the chorus is planning something a little bit different.
Their concert will be celebrating the output of Jewish music from a single country, the United
States of America. On the first date Zemel will be running a guest workshop
focusing on voice technique and other aspects of choral singing. This year
Zemel’s guest workshop leader will be the BBC’s Suzi Digby an experienced voice coach and conductor and well known to television audiences from her appearances on ‘Last Choir Standing’ and the
BBC’s ‘Choir of the Year’.…

There’s still room and time to sign up! The “Music of the Jewish People,” a full semester, tremendously fun online course at the college level is being offered by Hebrew College. I’m teaching this course for HC, and looking forward to a variety of participants, from college students and up, from anywhere in the US or abroad. I understand that there is still time to sign up to get credits (better hurry and not forget to sign upafter Rosh Hashanah!)
You can also take the course as a “non-credit” course and many people not needing the course for a degree may choose that route. Either way, for credit or non-credit, I’m expecting it to be exciting.

Traverse the deserts of the Middle East, the mountains of northern India, and the warm waters of the Mediterranean with Eliyahu Sills and his Qadim Ensemble. The group and their music bring ancient musical traditions to a contemporary audience, allowing for a musical dialogue between the different cultures. The group performs instrumental pieces as well as songs with words in Hebrew, Arabic, Greek, Turkish, Farsi and Ladino.
Qadim is a word found both in Hebrew and Arabic meaning “ancient past” and “that which precedes” as well as “forward movement” and “that which will come.” The band is aptly named as their ancient and timeless music bridges cultures from throughout the near east, such as Mizrakhi, Sephardic and Ashkenazi, with Arabic, Turkish, Persian and north Indian.…

It’s a private publication produced with the help of studio musician Pete Huttlinger, who has played on Grammy nominated projects and is a veteran Nashville session player. It shows. The Second Songs of Life Choral-Orchestral Festival will take place in Bulgaria and Israel, Dec. 27, 2010 – Jan. 7, 2011. The festival will feature the WORLD PREMIERE performance of a newly commissioned oratorio depicting the inspiring story of the rescue of the Jews of Bulgaria during World War II.
Hundreds of singers accompanied by professional philharmonic orchestra will perform the oratorio in celebration of a poignant historical moment. In addition to the world premiere of the oratorio, all performances will include a program specially selected by the Festival conductors.
The original work by Composer Charles David Osborne and Librettist Aryeh Finklestein features conductors Dr. Joshua Jacobson, Director of the Zamir Chorale of Boston, and Professor Henry Leck, Director of the Indianapolis Children’s Choir.

At long last the music of Hazzan Israel Alter is available on CD. Lois Welber recently released her cantorial CD, “Prayers of the High Holy Days: Shomeah Tefillah”. (Shomeah Tefillah – “…Who hears prayer” from Hineni) featuring the music of Hazzan Israel Alter. The CD focuses on music from “The High Holy Day Service” and “The Selichot Service” published by the Cantors Assembly. The original musical accompaniment is arranged by organist/composer Ernest Rakhlin and with pianist David Sparr. There is also one song included by Israel Goldfarb, “B’Sefer Chayim” (from Shirei T’shuvah –991900), which score is available through Transcontinental Music Publications.
These renditions are all sung with Welber’s strong mezzo-soprano in dedication to the 100th anniversary celebration of Temple B’Nai Israel in Revere, Massachusetts, where she has been cantor since 2000.…

The Old City of Safed will host an international group of musicians, for the Second Annual Clarinet and Klezmer in the Galilee program of Clarinet Master Classes and Performances, Aug 15-22, 2005. This year’s program will be under the Artistic Directorship of Giora Feidman, Master Klezmer and Classical Clarinetist. The ever-popular Safed Klezmer Festival will follow, from Aug 23-25.

Sid Beckerman, klezmer clarinetist, beloved teacher and mentor to a generation of klezmorim, passed away on April 4, 2007.
